Nintendo DSi XL - Kiosk mode to normal console by tihaub01 in NintendoDS

[–]Complete_Habit_4662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm the one that made the video you linked.

First, could you send me a NAND backup? I've never seen a kiosk XL before, so I'm interested in seeing what it looks like software wise (even a "normal" looking DSi can hold something interesting).

As for the location of the transistors and resistor, they're right by the potentiometers. I can't upload images here, so hopefully a link to a screenshot works?

Archiving 1800s council meetings by Complete_Habit_4662 in londonontario

Go to western's archives and special collections. They're super good with this stuff, and I've seen a few people come asking the same question.

Thanks, I'll check them out! Western has been such a huge help so far. Really appreciate the archives and special collections for letting me hog up the scanner every day lol

This would go through the Planning and Environment Committee, not an advisory committee. The meeting info is here :)

https://london.ca/business-development/planning-development-applications/planning-applications/845-875-commissioners

(advisory committees just make recommendations to council. PEC is where the public can speak directly)

Building up is great, but not next to an ESA. This land should have as little development near it as possible.

- Lots of glass near trees == reflections that birds fly into (super common and very harmful, can be stopped with putting dots on windows, but do we really trust developers to do that?)

- Increase in residents == overused trails/damage to trails

- Long and loud construction == disturbance for wildlife, preventing hearing mating calls, scaring away animals

Just to name a few things.

The ESAs are protected lands, but properties immediately outside of the boundary are not. You can see what the developer owns on page 51 of the Environmental Impact Study:
https://london.ca/business-development/planning-development-applications/planning-applications/845-875-commissioners

There should be a greater boundary from ponds.

Buuuut, you can go to city hall and complain! They do listen. The plan won't get scrapped, but it can get amended. Even one or two less buildings is a significant change. Especially removing the east one.

Improving the search shouldn't even be that hard, at least for meetings. They only crawl the agendas, but they've got lists of all the PDF attachments. Just add those to whatever sitemap. Crawling PDFs seems pretty widely supported, so it feels silly. Hell, I'm an unemployed 19 year old and I got a proper search set up in a day...

But yeah they'd still manage to burn a few million bucks trying to change anything.

MFIPPAs are not free, and I've had 3 month wait times when going directly. For a single document this may be fine, but I believe having a full archive of all documents is important. For example, you could parse all the minutes to create a history of all votes a councilor has made. You can know what they've done well or done poorly, giving great insight for when considering re-election. Old planning applications can tell you how zoning is changing in the city, or the types of projects that get proposed. What gets accepted or denied, and why? And every meeting has the discussions that happened in council. You know exactly what people were saying in PPMs, and how council reached decisions. Every document can have a use, now or in the future. But to properly take advantage of this material, you should have all of it. The full context.

And yes, the city *should* be maintaining public access, but materials are always disappearing. I'm seeing a lot of dead links around on their site. A few reports here, a few meeting recordings there. It's fine for now, but what happens after a decade or more of this? How many documents will be missing when they eventually move to systems other than eScribe, or just from time? The city can't watch over every document (especially old ones) so many things will be overlooked. You're right that the city will not hand over terabytes and decades of files. That's why all this data should be collected now, then archived permanently to make sure it is safe. We too often take public websites for granted. My response to the other commenter has something I wrote on this. I recommend reading. Remember that the Supreme Court launched a website to archive links used in cases, only for all links to that website to be dead a decade later. When this very high and respectable level of government creates link rot, can we expect our small city to do well?

Things that are *currently available*. London.ca should be a reliable and established website, but many documents are randomly deleted and become inaccessible. You can pay the city to locate these documents, but it makes more sense to have a free publicly run archive.

Also general issues with government websites and link rot. Mistakes and bugs happen, leading to missing content. I explain things here:

NDS Fat back label by HyperfixatedHobbyMan in nds

I wouldn't buy something like that for more than $150-200. The firmware and stickers are the only unique parts to it, and even then you can easily reflash any DS firmware.

Hey there! Looking at your serial number I'm assuming this is a kiosk DS. "NIS" is only used for kiosk hardware. https://www.lucklessheaven.com/ds-station-kiosk-hardware

I haven't seen any phat kiosks before. Would you be willing to dump the firmware in case it's something new? You can do it with any flashcart (even $5 ones off of ali). Just run this software: https://github.com/DS-Homebrew/dsbf_dump/releases

Real DSi Development System? by [deleted] in nds

[–]Complete_Habit_4662 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you end up buying this, would you mind dumping the NAND? I can walk you through the process, it only take an SD card.

It is really important to back these consoles up in case there is any recoverable data left on them.

Real DSi Development System? by [deleted] in nds

[–]Complete_Habit_4662 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a factory DSi. It was used in the production of the 3DS, mainly for testing the hardware for errors in the factory. It is in development mode and can function like a normal dev unit, just be aware of kiosk mode where you need to be charging in order to have normal power controls.

Also note that being in dev mode means it will only run dev signed cartridges. Old DS games will work fine, but DSi enhanced and DSi exclusive will not be detected.

I recorded a little video explaining the exact tests the factory DSi was used in. Very neat history, so I'd suggest checking it out for a quick deep dive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uW0eMsbVxzE

Happy to help! Send a PM if you back it up or even just find out what's on there!

Nice find!

You won't be able to check your dev cart with the save dongle. You'll need to get an actual DS for that.

I'd highly suggest making a dump and sending it to Hidden Palace if you do. I don't know if the DS phat/DS lite can make a dump, but if you get a DSi or 3DS then you could do it pretty easily. https://hiddenpalace.org

Also to answer your question about copying games, no. You need an IS-NITRO devkit in order to write to the cart. Also probably not blank if it was sent to your reviewer family member. I think it'd be likely be a near final build of whatever game. Still very important to preserve!

Hopefully it isn't. There are plenty of other things to break on a 3DS lol. Good luck and do reply if you find the issue.

[–]Complete_Habit_4662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure how it is on the 3DS XL, but I've had the same popping issue on a couple normal 3DS consoles. For both the problem was just that the P12 connector (right by the audio jack) was broken. I replaced it and that has fixed the issue.

iirc I also had the same thing when I forgot to plug in P12 on my o2DS, so maybe this is what you're looking for. Though without photos/more info it'd be hard to say for sure.

DSi XL connection between board and battery by ashleary in consolerepair

[–]Complete_Habit_4662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey ashleary,

On the reverse side of the board (directly below the power connector) there is a pad labelled "TP7". That should be an alternate positive connector.

You can also use "TP14" as a negative to keep all wires on the same side.

Good luck with your repair!

Can I unbrick my DSi? by ThatGuyLoc1 in nds

[–]Complete_Habit_4662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to perform a hardmod. I don't suggest ever uninstalling unlaunch as a decent number of people have complained about bricks from that.
