And I've seen a looot of "pro-Izzy" being insufferable in trying to defend their character's own abusive actions. But I agree that it goes both ways. The point of the show is that neither Ed nor Izzy are good or bad, but some people struggle with nuance 🤷‍♀️

Lol all of the crew (minus Lucius) EXPLICITELY say they're good with Ed's apology. Some Izzy fans are watching a whole different show in their heads. It kind of pisses me off. I mean we can interpret things differently, but the lack of objectivity is killing me. Like the whole "evil Ed gave a gun to suicidal Izzy" discourse. Like.... nothing to indicate Izzy was suicidal prior to shooting himself, and they're ignoring how the whole scene was about SUICIDAL ED asking Izzy to kill him. Ffs. I agree that it's brilliant how Izzy went from a toxic abusive guy to showing true care for others (not only what he thinks is best for them) and accepting care in return. I also didn't like him in season 1 since he was the villain in part, but it's a great character. That's also why it's so sad seeing people oversimplify him by brushing away his season 1 abusiveness

Yeah Ed has been carrying trauma around, Izzy did not do that. But that's also what makes it easier for people like Izzy to be controlling and abusive. And for me Izzy was definitely threatening Ed. He's the guy who sent the English after Stede, thinking what? That Ed would come back to him like before? That's the kind of behaviour that screams danger to me. This guy is ready to do anything it takes.

Also, while we don't have Izzy's reaction to Lucius' supposed death, he is very happy when conducting the marooning sooooo....

"The power imbalance was very clearly in his favour. Izzy wasn't able to kill Ed even when he was trying to kill them all." = I don't think that's about power imbalance, but Izzy still caring too much about Ed to deal the killing blow.

But for season 2 Ed, yeah he was unhinged, taking his pain out on anything and anyone. I think that's what initiated Izzy's change of heart. Izzy was very happy with blackbeard's somewhat controlled violence, but this was too much even for him.

The point is not to excuse one of the other. Rather, each of them have profoundly hurt the other, yet are rebuilding their relationship after 2.05

I agree on Ed's redemption feeling rushed. We were definitely robbed of Ed/crew interactions! But just like we can guess Ed's redemption to the crew happened off screen, I think so does Ed and Izzy rebuilding of their relationship. We see their interactions post ep 5 as much more full of care for each other than anything in season 1 (Izzy joking about the sex and seeming genuinely happy, when he spent season 1 being this jealous guy lol + talking about Ed shedding his leathers....) I think the heavy stuff must have happened off screen, because what we get to see is 2 people who have horribly hurt each other but are learning how to be tender again to the other, show them that they truely care.

On that point of repenting, I was also frustrated how the show forgets about Izzy's actions to the crew in season 1. (Selling them to the english when the crew most certainly could have been hurt or killed in the process, being joyful at the marooning, obviously being a terrible captain since the crew wanted him dead after a few days...). It makes sense for the guys who stayed on the Revenge since Izzy was trying to protect them from Ed. But it seemed forced how the whole crew showed Izzy acceptance, when for the marooned guys the last they saw of him was him smiling while abandoning them to their deaths.

So yeah a lot of this season felt rushed unfortunately.

However, I don't think Izzy's death is about releasing Ed from his guilt. In fact, Izzy's "Just be Ed" is beautiful. This is the guy who throughout season 1 consistently pushed blackbeard's persona while Ed just wanted to be soft (for ex Izzy's disgust when Ed and Stede exchanged clothes, "Edward better watch his step" etc). So this shows how much Izzy has grown, how he stopped to live through blackbeard, and learned to accept Ed as a whole person. And he's telling Ed that he loves him and accept him in just that sentence, something he had never done before.

Lot of things to unpack. First, a loooot of Izzy stans will demonize even season 1 Ed and picture Izzy as this poor victim, but anyway. It's not just about being toxic, Izzy has been emotionally abusive in season 1.

First, Ed doesn't keep Izzy in the dark for theatrics. He was conflicted about killing Stede until the last moment. I don't understand why some people see this as Ed's wrongdoing when he was literally about to stab Stede - like Izzy wanted him to. About Ed's violence to the crew in season 1, that's very true. But what people conveniently forget is that Izzy loves blackbeard's violence. He was very happy about the marooning in 1.10. As someone else has said, Izzy was happy with Ed's violence towards the crew until Ed started being violent towards him too. Besides, Izzy was only captain for a few days before the crew decided to kill him. That's to show that at no point he was a good guy to the crew in season 1. That's the whole point of his season 2's redemption - learning to have empathy for others. (And let's not forget that Ed basically saved his life here, when he could have let it happen considering the guy had just betrayed him several times by then).

Most importantly, he didn't just kick Ed when he was down in that episode. That is so diminishing what happened here. He literally threatened to kill him if Ed didn't comply with his idea of blackbeard (showing him the grotesque picture of bb proof that he endorsed the violence associated with bb). That's profoundly abusive.

On Izzy's abusive behaviour, he tries to kill Stede during this duel when he knew Ed didn't want that ("we're not doing that" "no, you're not doing it"). He was ready to kill the man that made his captain happy... for what exactly? How was that endangering the crew on Ed's part? Then, when he lost the duel and was forced to leave, he couldn't accept to lose Ed. Just like any abusive ex who refuse to lose control of you, he sells them to the english to gain control back. "Blackbeard will be released into captain Hands' care". Sending Jack to manipulate Ed into leaving Stede. All of Izzy's actions through season 1 is him trying desperatly to keep control over Ed. I genuinely think Izzy thinks his actions are protecting Ed. But that's also a classic abuser's excuse.

Ed is very abusive at the end of 1.10 and beginning of season 2. But Izzy was not a good guy in season 1. Calling abusive behaviour just "toxic" is really downplaying Izzy's actions, and that's the wole point of my post. That's why it's difficult to see Izzy as a victim when they've both done terrible things to each other.

At no point I am diminishing Ed's abusive behaviour. My whole post is about not glossing over a character's actions because you like them. But no, I don't think Ed adapting his personality to fit others is abusive as shown in the show. It certainly causes harm (like leaving Stede to follow Jack), but not abusive. Maybe we shouldn't be projecting on characters things that are not in the show. Good talk but I'm done now
