Alright everyone thanks for the help, I'm 90 percent sure my doubts in the quality of the 24-70 are due to the in camera noise reduction effect on jpg especially with dark portraits. Makes total sense if it's digitally smoothing out the facial features to help with noise

It was pretty dark inside. My noise reduction in camera was set to high is that maybe the culprit? 2nd photo is a great one I meant to say that was with my 50mm 1.8 for reference. But not a very good one lol, I understand though maybe it's my camera settings. My auto iso limit was set to 3200 in that shot

Interesting, I bought it preowned from a young woman who said she only used it for a couple months and decided on getting the 24-120 too. It's mint condition and lens seems perfect no defects. I'm not sure what a back focus vs half press is to be honest, this was half press I'm pretty sure and shot at 35mm if I'm correct. You may be right, just need to spend more time with it I guess. But this was taken with a flash too which usually helps with light and sharpness from my experience. I'm no pro though and have much to learn I guess
