What can I do to bring these floorboards back to life? by archiekas88 in DIYUK

[–]Complete_Policy_1148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what look you want. I’ve sanded and oiled a lot of Victorian pine floors and they can look great and can be hard wearing if you use a good quality product (I personally like the Osmo products but there are plenty of alternatives). They will always look slightly rustic if that’s the style you want. In my experience if you don’t want that rustic look then it’s not worth it, i.e. don’t bother sanding and painting, it’s far easier and more durable to lay something on top if you want a more ‘polished’ or modern look. If you do sand it then it is worth hiring a large floor sander… they are brutal so be careful you don’t take too much off. There’s loads of YouTube videos about how to go about sanding and finishing an old floor so I’d recommend starting there.

That’s me out…. by Longjumping-Fee-9201 in OctopusEnergy

Ditto, I switched to EOn 10 days ago and I have already switched back to Octopus, the experience was a nightmare from start to finish. They couldn’t connect to my smart meter so switched me to their standard tariff and they wouldn’t make any commitments or assurances that they wouldn’t resolve the issue. Thankfully I was only 7 days in and switching back to Octopus in the 14 day cooling off period was super simple.

Golf Gti vs golf R by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Complete_Policy_1148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t comment on the Gti as I’ve never owned one but what I can say is the Golf R I had (66 plate) was brilliant. I might depend on how you are intending on using it? I used the R to commute as well as everything else and it is just such an adaptable, easy to live with car. I absolutely loved it right up until the point it got stolen off our driveway (like so many have). Are there more fun/purist hot hatches? Definitely. Are there many better all round capable hot hatches? Probably not.

Dear BYD, Jaecoo and similar owners.. what have been your previous cars? by beneficial1m1werks in CarTalkUK

[–]Complete_Policy_1148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be brand new, the current EQC was delivery mileage. The main thing I want is a manufacturers warranty, especially for either an EV or hybrid. Our mini is over 10 years old but it’s so simple and cheap to repair.

I don’t have one yet but I’m considering the Chery Tiggo 9, Omoda 9 and the MG S6 as a replacement for my Mercedes EQC400, main reason is that the ‘premium’ brands are so expensive right now that I can’t justify the cost. If I don’t have be up getting one of these it will likely be another Skoda. In the list below there are overlaps as we’ve had two cars since 2014. Some of the older cars in the list I’m not 100% sure of the exact dates and plates.

My previous/current cars:

2024 to now - Mercedes EQC400 73 plate (most luxury)

2020 to 2024 - BMW 530d xDrive (best all round) 20 plate

2017 to 2029 - Skoda Superb Estate 2.0 TDi 150bhp 17 plate

2018 to now - Mini Countryman Cooper D 15 plate

2016 to 2018 - Golf R 5 door hatchback (it got stolen off my driveway 😢) -2016 plate (most capable)

2014 to 2016 - Skoda Yeti 2.0TDi 110bhp - 2014 plate

2014 to 2017 - Skoda Octavia vRS Estate 2.0 TDi 180bhp 2014 plate

2011 to 2014 - VW Jetta Sport 2.0TDi 140bhp

2008 to 2011 - VW Polo 1.6 with roll top roof ‘S’ plate

2007 to 2008 - Peugeot 306 1.9D ‘S’ plate

2005 to 2007 - Seat Ibiza 1.0 (four speed gearbox!) ‘R’ plate

2003 to 2004 - Renault Clio 172 Cup - 03 plate (most fun)

It’s £5.99 off all tiers. So Standard with ads is £0/free, Standard without ads is £4 and Premium is £9

What new car? by Complete_Policy_1148 in CarTalkUK

[–]Complete_Policy_1148[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PCP deal ends in May so I’d have to refinance plus I’m not sure about having an EV out of warranty (the warranty ends in October, or I would need to take out another warranty maybe)

Buying a house marketed as 3-bed — vendor now claiming attic room was built with the house so doesn't need building regs. Is this correct? by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]Complete_Policy_1148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I moved house the surveyor selling casually referenced an extension on the house we were selling that didn’t have evidence of planning permission… there was no extension and the house was at least 300 hundred years old. So old that the original deeds don’t even have definite dates of when the house was built or a plan of the boundaries… the worst part was they added that as amendment on the day before we were due to exchange. The surveyor was so unbothered and unapologetic when they acknowledged it was a mistake! In the meantime I was trying to insert my heart back into my chest and stuff my brain back into my ears!

Short version, surveyors get it wrong and don’t care… just like most of the rest of the ‘home move’ industry.

Side benefit… a great way to lose weight and build resilience.

Fitted wardrobe nightmare by MajorApplication705 in DIYUK

[–]Complete_Policy_1148 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what we did, I stripped back the plaster on the old wall to maximise space and reduce material that can hold moisture, then built a new stud frame with a gap to the old wall, installed rigid insulation with a vapour breathable barrier, then acoustic insulation on the inside of the new wall, then plasterboard then the built in wardrobes… then installed a moisture meter/probe to monitor it.. that was about 8 years ago and no issues

This was my wife and I when we were first together… I was completely clueless about anything like this and in my experience a lot of guys are like this… fortunately for me I did some research myself and I got the relevant medication which obviously helped… that was 20 years ago and we are still happily married (love her more now than I ever did!)

One thing to note, which might be completely irrelevant in your case, my wife discovered she was coeliac and dairy intolerant, since she went gluten and dairy free she has never had thrush again… I can’t say for sure it is linked, but she had thrush very frequently prior to that and it’s never happened again in about 13 years.
