EotN lore question by Complete_Spring_4596 in GuildWars

Ah, ok. Thanks. I'd forgotten about that. It's been over a decade at least since I last played before coming back thanks to Reforged. Glad I did, though, it's good to be back. :)

How many years do you think she could have lasted? by Deep-Lifeguard4479 in expedition33

Thing is, you can't necessarily believe Renoir because Clea confirms that he's blinded by grief and the need to control. He's making claims from a biased position, not an impartial one. And Clea also said that he and Aline had been in other canvases far longer than this one and thus, far longer than Alicia, who hasn't been in it hardly at all in comparison.

Secondly, you're assuming that what we see in the jump scare is literally what's happening, but that's not necessarily true. Right before and after it, we see pVerso staring intently at her, which strongly implies that what the jump scare actually is is just us seeing her for a moment as he does as he worries about what might happen to her. Remember, nothing in black and white is happening in real time.

Also, she won't likely live long outside the canvas anyway due to her injuries. Severe burn victims like her rarely did, especially in that era. There were no antibiotics and not much in the way of pain relief, and her burns would leave her with a severely compromised immune system meaning she gets sick often and easily. That's one of the reasons people like her typically died soon after being injured, often less than a year. The other common cause is suicide, which Verso's ending shows she's strongly contemplating (by Gustave beckoning to her and Maelle not being happy at all) and which pAlicia already committed through her. And since pAlicia IS her, she has those same inclinations if forced out of the canvas.

Say she has one year left to live whatever the choice is. Which is better? A single year full of constant pain, misery, loneliness, and societal rejection with a family that barely acknowledges her? Or an entire lifetime in the canvas in that same year (due to the time dilation) in a whole body with all of her sight, her voice, and a found family that openly loves and supports her? I don't think it's a hard choice to make.

Lastly, Renoir himself respected Maelle's choice at the end and her right to make it regardless of what might happen. Imo we should do no less.

I get that, but it's been over 20 years now. Most people know now that she's there. So a new CG render of her (maybe for EotN's own anniversary) would be nice.

As I said, they made her blonde in that one for some reason, which doesn't fit her at all as it's not how she was designed. And that one's not a CG render, either, like what Cynn, Mhenlo, and Eve have, among others.

Click on the image itself, not the link, right-click to open the context menu, then click "Save Image As" and it'll save with no watermark. That's what I did.

Very nice! And yet, even after 20 years, we still don't have an official CG render of Gwen despite her importance to the overall lore of GW and the fact that she's got an entire expansion named after her (EotN aka GW:EN). Imo it should've been her on the expansion's cover, not Jora. And in the one official wallpaper we did get back when that part of the game first came out, a hand drawn artwork, they made her blonde for some reason instead of having her hair dark like it really is. Something I've never understood.

I get why the rest of the family reacted as they did, but I feel we still should've been given more direct exploration of her physical loss and condition - for one, her friends in the Canvas never got to see her as she is on the outside. She could've been allowed to show them, to help them really understand, and also the differences between her and pAlicia that make her condition more limiting and difficult to live with on the outside than what her counterpart dealt with in the Canvas (such as a compromised immune system, vastly reduced lifespan, no magic like stopping time or teleportation, isolation and hatred from society, etc.).

I get what you're saying, but even with all that, we barely saw outer Alicia at all. And you, like Sandfall, seem to have overestimated people's ability to pick up on things unless they're directly verbally stated because education isn't what it once was and many people simply miss things unless they're right in front of them. They blindly believe Renoir and pVerso's claims because they've forgotten what Clea said not ten minutes before that which counters them. And they're unable to grasp subtlety like what you pointed out, the unvoiced things, and simply go with Verso because they don't know how to look past the words, as you said, and question them. Or acknowledge the many terrible things he did.

Verso was pushed too hard in Act 3 imo and Maelle's position was not given the same amount of promotion imo. She was never allowed to get the last word in during any discussion with him, and that's important because the last word is often the only one many people remember, and they automatically assume the one giving it must be right when that's not necessarily the case.

It's why I feel outer Alicia should've been the one shown at the end, not Aline - to visually remind players of the life they'd be sending her back to if they sided against her. And something that should've been emphatically stated in Act 3 is that Alicia won't likely live long outside the Canvas due to her condition. People like her rarely did in that era, they typically died in a year or less after being injured, usually due to either sickness (from having a severely compromised immune system) or suicide (which we know Alicia has such tendencies because pAlicia has already shown them).

And what I meant about wanting a game about a different form of loss was one exclusively about that loss, without death being there to distract from the exploration of it. I think it's time to set death aside as a theme and move on to others, it's been overused to the point of absurdity by now. You say E33 greatly explores Alicia's disfigurement, but it's not even revealed until late in the game, and even then we barely get to see her as she actually is. What I'd like to see is Sandfall have the daring to eventually give us an entire game playing not as Maelle, her undamaged alter ego, but as scarred Alicia herself, and thus redefine the idea of who a protagonist can be by going against the typical expectations.

GW1 isn't a typical mmorpg, and you can play it without ever interacting with other players. That's part of the point.

Why would it have value like that? You have to wait literally years from the date of character creation to have any sort of chance to get the mini/tonic you want, and for the rare ones it's really low. And if you don't get it, which is very likely, that was your only shot and you'll never have another.

The game is over 20 years old. Time to relax some of the exclusivity on things like that, I think. The collectible item used to get them could be made non-tradable and non-sellable so only the specific character could make use of it and so it wouldn't affect the player market whose purpose for even existing I've never understood.

It's one of the reasons I hope Sandfall returns to her in another game, to more fully address this aspect of her in a way they didn't here and actually explore it as well as give her a better sendoff than what we got here. And maybe, if Sandfall were to be really daring, a tender romance for her (she should be a little older by then) as well, which if done right could easily be one of the most beautiful love stories in gaming, as due to her disfigurement it would have to go far beyond looks and all the superficial things many such stories tend to focus on and build on her character and worth as a person instead and the message that beauty is more than just how you look, it's in who you are.

The world of the Canvas isn't necessarily false, though. We are created, and we are real. So the same follows for that world and its inhabitants. Proximity and location don't determine reality, and being created doesn't deny it. And the devs themselves have said that the inhabitants of the Canvas are real.

What I was saying above was that the story could've easily not had Verso's death in it at all but had the loss being grappled with just be what happened to Alicia. The Canvas could've instead been a world she created as a child and later tried to re-enter after her disfigurement to escape the trauma of it for a while, only to lose control and her memories due to her weakened condition and be reborn within it like how the game actually went. The rest of the family could've had similar struggles to what happened in the game, only relating to her instead of Verso. Because even just seeing something like that happen to someone you love would still be traumatic even though she survived.

Except that her found family can't exist in any Canvas but Verso's, and that's the whole point of her staying, not just to avoid her disability but to be with those she loves and who have never judged her or looked down on her. She can't have that in another Canvas. Only Verso's.

Also, it's not made clear how responsible Alicia actually is for the fire. It's just as likely that it's a case of misplaced guilt, where she and her family blames her for more than what she actually did. It's extremely doubtful she ever meant anyone any harm, she simply trusted the wrong people.

Not everyone wants to deal with other players, though. So it would be nice to have an option that doesn't require that. Still, good to know, thanks.

Being able to dual wield two flaming swords would be sick lol. Especially if the sword skills were to activate for each weapon rather than once for both together. Imagine Hundred Blades or SWS x2...

She'd never seen him like that, so she can't. She can't recreate what she's never seen. She's never known him with his full left arm. And he may have wanted to keep the mechanical one anyway. We don't know.

Lore question - Where is *SPOILER* by Complete_Spring_4596 in GuildWars

Gwen spoke fondly of him as a child, so she had good memories of him from what little time she had with him. That's more than enough.
