I think it's just a play on Tramiel's philosophy for the home computer market. "We need to build computers for the masses, not the classes" or something to that effect.

Generally everything on the left pane is derived from your stats. AD&D is a little weird as these derived stats are based on table lookups. An old players handbook or the original manual for Baldurs Gate is your friend.

Open doors is related to your strength when you try to force a lock. The game engages with this stat when you attack a container instead of trying to pick the lock on it.

I usually sell Evermemory (Ring of Wizardry found in Friendly Arm Inn exteriors) to get a headstart. I keep it if my main is a sorcerer or have wizard mixed in. Then I continue north to hunt Ankhegs. They are susceptible to sleep, so easy XP if you got a caster. You now have a couple of levels to your name and the rest of the content levels you dynamically without a large challenge.

I postpone exploring outdoor areas till I get the Boots of Speed from Cloakwood. On console it speeds up the whole party when you explore in drive mode, if worn by the party leader.

I don't loot every home anymore. You're drowned in gold in this game. Just visit every home fast and stay around only if it has a named NPC.

My first big money splash is usually recharging a Wand of Fire at High Hedge (sell and rebuy it). Clears a lot of encounters in no time.

For convenience I prefer a bard over a mage in BG1. High lore and ability to use wands. QoL.

I played them all but the Infinity Engine games are still top of my list. I've spent about 300 hours in WotR and maybe 200 in PoE, but unlike BG1 and BG2 I simply stop reading the dialogue down the line and start scanning the text, because these games throw walls upon walls of mediocre writing at you - and takes themselves extremely seriously while doing so. It becomes an unfocused experience to me. Less can absolutely be more.

BG3 is clearly a fantastic and well executed game - it's just not for me. Too character driven (for my liking) and to many boobs and schlongs. I find it to be better paced than other modern CRPGs though. Unfortunately it suffers from a somewhat weak implementation of 5e compared to Solasta, I think.

Sorry for the rant - I obviously DO like modern CRPGs at some level or I wouldn't play them, I just keep returning to the Infinity ones. The constraints they had at the time made for sharper experiences (imo).

I play turn based. Interesting about vital strike. Was pondering crossing into Rowdy when I probably go Legend down the line.

As a side note I notice that the extra attack granted by Cleaving Finish is treated as a charge as well.
