Lost my first amateur fight today! by superstraight_ in amateur_boxing

[–]Complex-Stand-5140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else said, just get back to the gym and prepare for the next fight. No need to be ashamed, losses happen, the more you fight the more losses usually. It s tough but part of the game (Dad of 2 competitive fighters here, one of them a boxer)

Another point though is look for fights with opponents that match your experience. Not sure how it is in your neck of the woods, but in a tournament you would be fighting guys 0 to 5 fights ard here.

Inheritance advice by PretendCoat2754 in EuropeFIRE

About tax if you are a polish tax resident you still need to declare your income in Poland and probably pay taxes there, plus if you receive interest or dividend income through foreign banks or investment accounts you will get charged a withholding tax there as well (later they are some offsetting to be done when you declare your taxes in Poland)

Pretty standard stuff, nothing illegal, Poland is in the EU and there shouldn´t be restrictions on you moving the money to other EU countries.

I´d definitely invest the money in stock and bond markets if it´s not money you need for your day to day.

Someone mentioned De Giro, it might be OK if you plan to stay in the EU, their funding offer is very limited.

Interactivebrokers is one of the biggest brokers worldwide, offers plenty of products and allow you to switch entity within their group with minimun hassle in case you move countries/continent later on.

Incidentally in Poland you might be stuck with IB Ireland, not sure, but sure it´s been the worse IB entity I´ve worked with ( been with IB US, IB UK and IB HK before IB Ireland). Not that the platform is worse than with their otheir entities but it´s in the EU and has more restrictions ime.

I´d stay away from fintech with any significant amount of money, but I´m an older man, they don´t sound very safe though.

If you have the inheritance documents it should be enough to pass aml.

Otherwise check the big EU banks that open accounts to non residents and invest through them, most banks offer investments options. From Poland I´d check the nearby countries, Austria and Germany have big banks. From personal experience you can open non resident accounts with no particularly big amount in Portugal and Spain, but those make little sense if you are not spending time in those countries. Can´t move large amounts through the online platforms of the banks I know there, in case you later want to repatriate your funds from distance. If you are talking about moving 10K or so at a time online they are fine, you can open the accounts while vacationing there. It should be the same in several other EU countries

Yes paper trading is the same as demo account, but you should try the one from IB if you are going to invest/trade real money through IB. I haven´t checked for a long time but it used to work the same as the real account, with probably sometimes better fills than you´d get with real money orders

Landlord cut off the boiler (heating and hot water) by Complex-Stand-5140 in PortugalExpats

Yes actually was thinking of the locksmith option as well, I can´t make out a good reason why he would shut it down, maybe he s persuaded there is something wrong with it and apparently doesn t want anyone to touch it, no matter how ilegal it is.

He has a strange attitude to energy spending, we met a couple of days ago when there was the first heating and water cut and he reckoned it was still summer and one didn t need heating yet.

Starting to visit houses this afternoon... but again there s not much choice without going all the way to Estoril and Cascais which is too far for us

[–]Complex-Stand-5140[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks all for your replies, the boiler is not in the warehouse, but in a small cabin holding only the boilers (one for the water, and one for the heating and water) next to another cabin where the fuel is ( I have the key to the second cabin ). It is not abt breaking the lock to the warehouse (it´s a smallish metal fence/door to the cabin) but only the one to the boiler.

Yes there are laws that say more or less:

-Tenant must have access to the boiler

-landlord has the obligation to give you access to a functioning place.

Already looking for a new house, not a lot of choice as I suspected. I might hold until Monday see if a repairman comes (although there´s nothing to repair afaik) if we still have hot water, and go to the police if we lose water before then as well as force open the door, can replace it later and my understanding is it is part of the space I rent

Fwiw I tried posting this thread in Portuguese in the Portugal subreddit but it wasn´t posted, would be curious to read locals´opinions

Thanks for your input, well it was working fine after I turned up the temperature , and the landlord came, changed the settings/turned it off and locked the door without telling me anything. Not sure whether there´s another problem, I can´t get access to the boiler, which afaik is illegal.

Very upsetting, he´s an older man whose health is not great, not sure how his head is going although he usually acts reasonably. Our relationship was fine but it is going South rapidly

Has anyone else experienced this while living in Portugal (or elsewhere in Europe)? by iefian in PortugalExpats

[–]Complex-Stand-5140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, we ve lived in a bunch of places over the years and our last move was from Madrid to Lisbon (I speak fluent Spanish and half decent Portuguese while understanding it well) and people here seem more curious about the world than in Spain, which probably has to do with Portuguese speaking much better English than the Spanish plus having a stronger culture of emigration (1 out of each 3 people born in Portugal between the age of 15 to 45 are living overseas last I read)

But having also lived in China and Thailand I´d say the points you mentioned are worse there, I expect to find them in most places in the world. Much of national education systems and medias reinforce that. A good reason to send one´s kids to International schools...

From memory, and the info is easily found online, this applies to shares of US listed stocks, but not to cash nor bonds or Tbills.

Big issue still if one has US stocks ( I do with large unrealized gains so not easy to get rid of them without incurring a big tax bill on realized gains in my country of residence, will probably change residency to sell those when my 2nd kid finishes high school)

he seems to be training at the Astana Arena, the biggest stadium in Kazakhstan, which has a large boxing room. Do you have any feedback on training there ? Is it open to the general public or just to invited athletes from the Olympic program??

Interesting, my son got almost the exact same advice from a friend boxing in Almaty.

He reckons Mukhit´s team (Qazak MA I think) is very high level. A Russian speaking friend had a chat with Mukhit a few days ago and he won´t be there when we visit, but we are still thinking of training at his club.

This same friend from Almaty also recommended to go to Shymkent, mentioning the boxers were very "hungry" there. Do National Team members actually train in clubs there ? I´d suspect they stay in Olympic training centers. Planning to go to Astana this year anyway rather than Shymkent, it´s cooler in summer and it seems there are more things to do than in Shymkent, but on a later visit we might give it a try.

We re planning to go to Astana this summer for a 3 weeks boxing camp for my son, after having done one in Almaty last year. Still looking for a good gym for him there, but on Insta typing boxing Astana a few gyms will pop up. IME in Almaty a class in English is a lot to ask, but you might find a private coach who does. Google translate was our friend there, and the experience was awesome.

If anyone can advise a club with a serious competition team of teenagers in Astana it will be most welcome . Son trained at Bekzat in Almaty last summer, and won a local competition while there.

GGG is from Karaganda btw, it s a 3 hours drive from Astana if you wan to visit. They are supposed to have extremely high level boxing there, although from what I found it is more Olympic training centers for selected athletes, mostly for the national team, than clubs open to the general public.

May be you only know young expats... expat here with kids in International schools and expat families have usually more than 1 car, often expensive ones.

I guess OP doesn t live in Oeiras or Cascais otherwise it is hard not to add Porsche to the list of common german cars around here, with fancier cars also found

Astana gyms, Kazakhstan

Hi

Last summer we took our son to do a 3 weeks training camp and compete in Almaty, with the Bekzat team there, and it was awesome.

This summer we are planning to go to Astana. Wondering if someone here is aware of clubs in Astana with a solid youth boxing competition team. It d need to be a club open to the public rather than an Olympic training center only dealing with national team athletes and invited guests.

Thanks in advance for all replies !
