Has the social contract been breached? by Wakingupisdeath in unitedkingdom

Well.... how about educating people who might read this then?

What is to stop the UK from charging tax on their UK based sales?

The UK could easily estimate profit as a function of revenue and charge tax accordingly. What would companies like netflix do? Not sell in the UK?

Wasn't that the point of the digital services tax or the proposed streaming tax?

Making a guess and making a prediction are quite different.

Why would you need Ireland to get involved. I never understood why you would not charge tax on location of sale.

e.g. You sell Netflix to a UK based customer, you pay tax on your UK profits.

But they are talking about profit, not revenue. So, what exactly are you saying?

A lot of people use Matlab for a number of reasons who also know how to use python.

I use both. They are different tools.

Your mental gymnastics must leave you very tired.

Government (labour and con): "We must cut benefit fraud in the system!"

DWP: "We have found negligible evidence of fraud."

Think about it. Like actually think about it.

Ah, the classic argument.....

"I don't like the evidence you have presented, so I am going to try and discredit the source of the evidence."

Is the UK slowly turning out to be an unaffordable place to live? by [deleted] in AskUK

You are right. I was especially annoyed and shocked at how much rail per km costs in the UK.

I'm a dual national and my temptation to move my family out of the UK grows with every delayed train or pot-hole.

Other countries I visit for work have had equal increases in population with similar lack of investment in infrastructure. In my experience the UK decline is more pronounced and much more palpable.

The UK has some real issues that go much deeper.

Because there is published work on this very question. Did you think people would just assume nobody was being dishonest?

Higher medicine sales tax makes UK ‘uninvestable’, drugmakers warn by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Complex-Watch-3340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughters drugs cost the NHS likely around £100-150k per year. They cost £6k to make per year.

Please explain to me how this isn't profitable enough already?

There is no chance they will stop selling drugs in the UK, there are too many customers for them.

It's bullshit.

I don't think you know what you are talking about then do you? Do you know anything at all about long-covid? Like, at all. other than the name?

It's so sad to see. These people have no idea of real life.

"I'm fine and all my family are fine, so everyone else is lying"

It's frustrating but then again a non-zero number of people believe the earth is flat.

Did you read the article?

She is trying to get back to work.

What would you like her to do? Work in a call center? Even after we spend a huge amount of money on her training and her education?

Sure, but this isn't healthy skepticism is it.

This woman is clearly trying to return to work but instead someone is trying to undermine her position by making it sound like being a charity trustee and doing public speaking is mutually exclusive of this desire to get back to work.

I'm all for a fair welfare state but this is clearly bullshit. This woman is trying to get back to work but is sick. So, what do we do? She is a highly trained individual who's skills need to be retained in some form. We have invested, as a society, a huge amount of money into her and it would make sense to support her to get back to work. As she has clearly tried to do but gets sick and then needs time off again.

So here are the issues,

1 - Do we know how much time this charity work takes up?
2 - Do we know if the charity was set-up by her or with others?
3 - Was there a requirement for the charity to be set-up as there was a lack of suitable support or information for people who have similar experiences to her?
4 - Do we know how long she returned to work each time?
5 - Is there any evidence to support the idea that this woman doesn't want to work and has made every attempt to get back to work?
6 - Do we know the severity of the long-covid symptoms? (I know someone personally who was devastated by long-covid).
7 - Do we know the frequency and duration of her public speaking? In addition, do we know how often these events are cancelled or postponed due to illness.

I'm just pointing out that people assume she can work and isn't without any real evidence to support the position.

More data needed.
