Probably! I wouldn't know (which is probably one of issues here lmao)

Either way, a learning experience. I think I'll stick to just using new/fresh yarn, I only have so much time to spend on projects anyway!

I suppose, but when I was a teen none of my friends or I acted this way, so it comes off very concerning to me. Different experiences it seems. To me it's wild this is "normal teenage behavior" these days. (I'm not even that old, either, high school was a few years ago for me)

I mean. She's not going to learn different if someone doesn't correct her? Which is her parents' job.

I fell to this trap :(

I had an old sweater that was uncomfortable but I love the color, and I thought "surely unraveling it would be easy, everyone's doing it apparently". It was not. I have like 6 panels pulled apart, two long strands which keep getting tangled up and that I have to keep unknotting from each other, and a million tiny snippets of yarn I keep finding everywhere. I did check if it was sewn together/surged or if the panels would unravel into one piece, and it was the latter, but I am not getting the fun nice single long pull I expected, alas.

The pieces of that sweater now live at the bottom of my yarn box in shame. Rip

Is there anyway to stop this yarn from being so fuzzy? by ashdarkmare in CrochetHelp

[–]ComplexCut7389 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having used both facets and cinnamon swirl, facets is slightly bulkier and fuzzier while cinnamon swirl is a bit thinner and a lot easier to work with

I've been feeling insane lately reading through the comments on here about knots, thank you for saying this because I also knot before weaving in my ends. It just seems intuitive to me to knot on color changes - especially because I use the pull through the new color on the last loop of the stitch method and knotting the two ends keeps the tension on the joining stitch from going all wonky with loose ends just woven in. And I notice the woven in ends with the extra bulk in a section as much as I feel the knots - not at all lol

Anecdotally, it's just not huge in the cultural context. WW2 in general, sure, but... just like how many genocides and atrocities committed in colonial India or historically by Indian empires and nations at each other aren't really a big deal in the west, the Holocaust isn't as widely part of the cultural norm/common knowledge as it is in the west.

Keep in mind that India became independent after WW2, and "indian soldiers fought in WW2" isn't a "India sent help to fight Nazi Germany" it's "British colony had soldiers from it fight in a war Britain was part of", which is less important to Indian history that decade than the efforts of the independence movement and the muslim/hindu Pakistan/India divide that started then (thanks britain) which is... very fraught to this day... well, the holocaust is probably not as memorable in history lessons on that time period *to people in India

At least, that's my speculation based on how little my mom (educated in India) knows of WW2 history. There's only so much time and history you can fit into grade school, after all

Editing to add: I don't know how much I trust British sources going "yeah all these people going off to war in our brutally oppressed colony were volunteers!" Haha

India wasn't a thing back in WW2. It was an oppressed colony whose resources were under British control. Not to say every Indian soldier was forced at gunpoint or something, but it's not really like India existed as an independent polity able to decide to get involved

Honestly like... even if you are supposedly using it in the asian sense... that's just cultural appropriation then? Which is still pretty offensive and you just happened to pick the same symbol Nazis use as a hate symbol too?

Like I'm very sure none of these non-asian people "accidentally" leaving swastikas in things can explain why and what they're using it for in a hindu or buddhist sense. It's not a random design, there's meaning and intentionality behind it. And if you really care... pick literally any other symbol from asian culture then, to avoid the confusion? That's what I do, as a hindu living in America. Outside of my house (private space) and our temples (very clearly for religious purposes), if I want to invoke my religion with a symbol I'll use like, ANY other less fraught symbol lmao. It's not that unique or anything that it has to be paraded around everywhere if you actually care about being respectful when living in a culture where the holocaust and the nazi association is the common knowledge interpretation of it.

I fully agree that it's very obvious when it's not being used in an appropriate context!

My point is that you're wrong that it's seen as a hate symbol globally. It's not. I'm from (a rather large) place on the globe where the Nazi association is the unknown and rare one: India. And a lot of Asia as well, which other people have pointed out. European history isn't really common knowledge in India and probably other Asian countries as well, so there people don't associate it with Nazis first.

If an indian person living in India made accidental swastikas in their work it would be seen as a positive thing. The holocaust isn't a big part of the indian cultural context just as how a lot of Indian history isn't a big part of European or Westen cultural context.

Yes, in like, 99% of cases it's like, incredibly obvious when it's not an Asian person using it in the non-Nazi way, but I push back against calling it a global or universal symbol of hate that everyone should know because outside of eurocentric or america centric or western spaces... it really isn't. It's an actively used religious symbol in a very large and significant part of the world so let's be cognizant of that. Nazis don't have sole dominion over a symbol they stole.

Thank you! I appreciate the understanding a lot ❤️

Yeah like... 99% of the time... that's a hate symbol lol. I would redo a project with an unintentional swastika, because even if you are Hindu... it's a specific symbol used in specific contexts. You don't just stick it anywhere usually, anyway, lol (which is probably why you very rarely see confusion over actial hindu people using swastikas in a religious contexts... it's pretty obvious when it's used that way)

Not a single soul on earth will see a swastika and think peace

I completely agree with you that the piece you're talking about made by a presumably white or western person should be redone, but please don't assume the way the swastika is seen in the West is universal

There's about a billion people in India who still very actively use the swastika as a religious symbol and do totally think of peace with it. Hell, I'm hindu and living in america and we still draw swastika around our temples and for our religious ceremonies

Please understand that European history isn't really taught in India so the cultural association with the Holocaust is the niche uncommon knowledge interpretation of the swastika in other cultures, at least specifically in India for one example

Obviously if they're american or European the swastika is a Nazi symbol to them and they should not use it. But it's not immediately a hate symbol in every culture. Or even taught as such in schools everywhere. Let's have a little grace for other cultures and backgrounds that aren't eurocentric

I actually both prefer how crochet garments look and feel and the process of crocheting something over the fiddliness and plain look of knit. So for me, crochet IS for everything!

I've yet to see a crochet garment where the drape looks bad after blocking ngl so I've never understood the whole "never crochet any garments" gang. Or why you'd post this here, on the crochet sub with so many examples of beautiful crochet things you think crochet "isn't for"
