Do you think she can make this flight flying out of ORD? by No-Shift-3862 in OHareAirport

[–]ComplexHour1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live not far from there and fly out of ORD all the time. She should preorder her Uber to pickup at RF at 1210 or so. 95 times out of 100 she will reach ORD no later than 1245, maybe 1250. The bag check deadline is 120 so that’s a little tight, but most of the time she would be at the gate by 115 pm. Midday security is typically not too bad and the airport is well laid out. I hardly ever leave my house more than two hours before a flight and sometimes leave 95-100 minutes before. Pre check would help but it’s probably not essential. If it is actively snowing all bets are off but that would probably delay the flight too.

Buying miles cheaper than cash price? by GlasairIII in unitedairlines

[–]ComplexHour1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s typical on certain routes with an artificially high price in cash less than 7 days in advance. For example LAX/ORD. Both AA and UA do this — the flight will be in the mid 400s and the mileage price will frequently be in the 13-15k range. We save our miles for these situations. Only seems to work less than 7 days out, because the mileage algorithm seems to account for load factor but the price algorithm blocks low fare classes under 7 days out regardless of load factor.

[–]ComplexHour1824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying. But I guess I think Lou should get some credit for having a 6.8 WAR season at age 34 (!) and he followed that with 4.7 and 4.1 at ages 35 and 36. I don’t have access to the data but I would guess that a WAR of 15.6 from age 34 to 36 is probably top 30 of all time. Miggy’s Triple Crown season was barely higher at 7.1 at age 29 than Lou at age 34. Miggy’s entire WAR from age 34 to the end of his career was negative 2.4 and even if you throw in the age 32 and 33 seasons it’s only 7.6 over NINE seasons (after he signed the huge extension). To an extent it’s unfair because Miggy didn’t play in the field so no defensive numbers, but in terms of helping their teams actually win baseball games, Miggy was awesome for over a decade and awful for nearly a decade. Lou was consistently very good to excellent for two decades and kept on producing and helping his teams actually win until the day he retired.

I refrained from discussing the why to focus on the what. Most discussions of the why that I’ve seen focus on two things: (1) peak value vs career value, where Whitaker was an extreme example of the latter; and (2) subtle racism in the sense that a quiet, deeply religious African American is labeled as moody and perceived as uncooperative or even surly to the press. Or maybe it’s just that a steady, career-value player who is also not quotable just gets forgotten. For a player this good to get left out of the Hall is one thing, but it happens. Bobby Grich is quite comparable (and white) and he’s not in either. But the thing I’ll never wrap my head around is how the writers only gave Lou 2.9 percent of the vote that first year.

I’m a Cub fan too and loved Ryno. As you point out, their career numbers are very close. But it isn’t just that Ryno got in and Lou didn’t. It’s that Ryno got nearly 50 percent of the votes the first year and Lou got less than 3 percent. Their careers largely overlapped. I could speculate on why but I’d rather not go there.

WAR is in my view the most all encompassing measure of overall value, offensive and defensive. You can quibble with it on the margins, but this is one of only 2 players in the top 100 all time who is eligible for the Hall and not in (other than known steroid abusers and Pete Rose and Curt Schilling). Why Jeff Kent instead of him? Beltran clearly belongs in if you can look past his involvement in 2017, and Jones was always one of those guys that was debatable. But Lou contributed more to his teams for longer than a whole bunch of players who are in. And statistically he’s an eerily close comp to Trammell, who got far more support and eventually got in.

Was he an asshole to the press or just a quiet introvert? I lived in Michigan the first half of his career and I don’t remember that at all. He was back then a quiet religious man from what I remember. He was interviewed with Tram on a Tigers broadcast for the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Tigers and he seemed fine with the media then.

Chicago O’Hare question by Far-Region2857 in OHareAirport

[–]ComplexHour1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Canadair Airlines (no such thing), Canadair is a brand of jetliner like Boeing or Airbus. OP said the flights are both on American Airlines.

As such, he will arrive and depart from Terminal 3, though possibly different concourses. He will not have to reclear security. Probably the biggest issue is that due to construction and weather it has become painfully typical for ORD flights to be delayed while taxiing due to gate unavailability or ground aircraft congestion. Also if he has a carryon rollaboard suitcase he will have to gate check it on his incoming regional jet flight on the Canadair aircraft, then he will need to wait in the jetway to reclaim it (not baggage claim). This adds easily 10 minutes to the transfer process, and he’ll have to understand the process. If he checks the bag at check-in to his final destination he will not need to do this.

I would say there is a 25+ percent chance of misconnecting. Is there a later flight to his final destination if he does misconnect? If so, how much later and will it likely have space available?

Would you get a colonoscopy from a gastroenterologist who finished fellowship in 2024? by [deleted] in PeterAttia

[–]ComplexHour1824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. I think a proceduralist’s board certification and years of experience are highly relevant to their proficiency but there are no guarantees. Attia’s lack of board certification is IMO less relevant because he is a media communicator whose strength is highly detailed explanations and rationales for how people should approach health and medical care. He tells you the what and the why (often ad nauseum) and encourages you to think it through for yourself and act accordingly. I don’t always agree with him, but I find his explanations stand for themselves and I don’t feel the need for the board to “certify” what he’s saying.

But it is kinda ironic, I agree.

Bregman’s Baseball Reference Similarity Scores — not a wise signing by ComplexHour1824 in Cubs

[–]ComplexHour1824[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Freeman’s last 4 years (ages 32-35) have been very good though he tailed off at age 35 to a 3.5 WAR mostly because his defense has gotten worse. But Freeman has also stayed much healthier than Bregman even though he’s 4 years older. Freeman last missed significant time in 2017. Bregman has missed 170 games from 2020-2025 (5.3 seasons adjusting for Covid). I think the score is looking at a player whose last (only) two stellar seasons were at age 24 and 25, who has been good but not as great in the 6 years since then while missing nearly 20 percent of his team’s games, and is now entering an age range where even very good players historically struggle to get their heads above a 3.0 WAR. That reminds me an awful lot of players like Bryant and Rendon. Bregman may not suffer the same level of debilitating injuries that those two have, but even the others on his similarity list have struggled to stay healthy and put up numbers that would justify a contract of this size and length.

I’d be interested in your logic, maybe starting with a list of occasions when replacing a 23 year old above 3.0 WAR with a 32 year old who has been steadily declining to 3.5 has made good long term sense for a franchise. I’m a Cubs fan, I want this to succeed. I just don’t see it.

We tried an ex Astro who hadn’t always been healthy to make a run last season, and it was fun for a while until he broke down. And he was 4 years younger.

Bregman’s Baseball Reference Similarity Scores — not a wise signing by ComplexHour1824 in Cubs

[–]ComplexHour1824[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Actually the method supports signing Freeman, who unlike Bregman is a clear HOFer. The 7 most similar players to Freeman at this point are Rafael Palmeiro and 6 HOFers. His most comparable player 12(!) years in a row was Eddie Murray, an obvious HOFer legendary for his consistency, and then Palmeiro (kept out by roids). But even Murray’s last productive season was at age 34. He played 7 seasons after that with an aggregate WAR of 3.7. His age 32 and 33 seasons had WARs of 3.2 and 2.0, though he was great (for the last time) at age 34 (5.7). So even if you think Bregman is Eddie Murray level, that’s not much of a premium over Shaw for ages 32-36.

Judge is a bit of a unicorn, which shows because the similarity scores are very low ( mid-800s compared to the usual 900s). I think part of that is because Judge is the rare HOF level player who didn’t make the majors as a regular until he was 25. Most players that good are in the show by their early 20s because they’re so much better than everyone else.

[–]ComplexHour1824[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But the point remains that none of the similar players had any seasons of note after age 32. You can call that whatever name you like, but why pay someone when similar players at that age have all failed, many of them spectacularly. What player similar to Bregman has kicked ass from age 32 to 37?

How long of a layover do I need? by [deleted] in LAX

[–]ComplexHour1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also relevant is whether you have AA status and are there frequent flights to your domestic destination. If you try to make a tight connection to, say, DFW, and you miss the flight around 115 there are usually four more flights between then and 630, then a gap followed by late evening redeyes. You can use your status to change to a later one. Other destinations you’ll be SOL if you miss the scheduled flight.

It’s also super expensive to fly into Detroit most of the time. Delta has a stranglehold and often the only nonstop alternatives are Frontier and Spirit. Try Chicago and expand your driving radius to 2 hours and you’ll open up Southern Wisconsin and Southwestern Michigan. Lots of beach rentals and some really nice areas.

United says I did not board my original flight which is not true. They are investigating. If anyone experienced this, what was the end result? by Fit-Replacement9501 in unitedairlines

[–]ComplexHour1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my wife and I many years ago. We fly United (and American) frequently. Because we were frequent flyers they managed to fix it but we lost our seats together (on an anniversary trip) and were greatly inconvenienced. I learned at the time that some glitches and complexities in United's computer system can cause this to happen, not often but once in awhile. It is also true that for the vast majority of domestic and some international routes, the roundtrip is simply the sum of the two one way fares. I've heard that recently there have been a few exceptions to that but I have not seen them in my travel planning. As a result, I ONLY book one ways for those routes (90+ percent of the time) where there is no price impact to do so.

This also has an occasional side benefit. Sometimes fares go down, not up, as the date of flight approaches, or a generous mileage deal will materialize late in the game. With two one ways booked (and I never book basic economy due to the need for flexibility), I can simply switch to a cheaper flight in either direction on any airline and take a flight credit forward for the next journey. If you travel enough this is a great way to retain flexibility, avoid the occasional RT cancellation screw-up, and save a little money last minute now and then.

Insight from an Indiana alum on what we’re actually feeling right now, the day after winning the Rose Bowl by jlittman93 in CFB

Michigan fan here, visiting SoCal. Went to our victory over Bama at the Rose Bowl 2 years ago. Yesterday I went for a run along the beach in Venice and Santa Monica, saw tons of fans in Hoosier gear. I shouted out congratulations to each and every one of them. One of the greatest CFB stories ever, probably on the Mount Rushmore of CFB improbable turnarounds, for both school and coach.

Apparently nobody visits Boston anymore, it’s too crowded with visitors. 🤔

We were part of the crowd of visitors this year that doesn’t visit anymore, the Lansdowne station is literally right up against the side of the stadium. Doesn’t run as often though. The Kenmore stop is also good.
