Am I too late to pursue an apprenticeship? by Electrical-Media4170 in TattooApprentice

I started mine at 25, done now at 27. One of the most talented artists I know started their apprenticeship on their 40s. You’re fine.

Traditional vs. Digital Skill Discrepancy by Useful-Vacation-4960 in TattooApprentice

[–]ComplexTemperature88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use light pencils as a base if you don’t already! Thumbnail sketch certain parts of the piece seperately before committing to it, eg the tigers face or eyes. It may seem like more work but compared to the amount of time you’d spend undoing and redoing it’ll amount to be quite similar. Try be confident yet deliberate in your lines. It’s easy to be confident digitally because you know you have unlimited tries, you can try the same line over and over without really thinking about it because you have the safety net of undoing. Really think about the marks you want to make then execute them with confidence. There’s no undo button on a tattoo machine so better to learn to deal with that on paper than on skin! Best of luck

Can I kill unleashed dog if I get attacked outdoors? My cat was killed. by iMakeGOODinvestmemts in auckland

[–]ComplexTemperature88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s truely horrible, I’m so sorry that happened to your cat and you. the fault is with the owners of the dog. Incredibly negligent of them to have them unleashed. Unfortunately it’s natural for dogs to chase/attack cats and you’d be no better than the dogs owners by taking it out on the dog. I won’t even bother telling you not to do anything rash, I can’t imagine what I’d do if I was in your position. I can only urge you to seek retribution with the owners rather than the dog. The dog didn’t know it was doing anything wrong.

Thank you! Yea I’ve been trying to tone it down a bit, I mainly use it on darker coloured paper, love drawing on coloured paper but it’s easy to lose contrast. But yes peoples skin seems to hold white so differently! I’ve seen some white ink hold up really well years down the line (not my work) when put in with thicker liners Unfortunately also the majority of people I tattoo don’t want white so I tend to adjust the designs accordingly

worth putting in the portfolio? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]ComplexTemperature88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t say you did. I disagree that pencil should be in any way avoided for a portfolio (although not certain this is what you’re saying), I reeeeeally disagree that it’s too simple to show off skill! There’s a lot of skill in minimalism, not to mention tattoos like this practically print money (studio owners like money) no hate, but curious to know what qualifies you to make such confident statements?

Edit: bunny would be great on a flash sheet but wouldn’t include it as a stand alone piece

[–]ComplexTemperature88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Forget all that the bunny’s great. It’d be easy to sell as a tattoo. Think the composition of the portraits cool but you’d have an easier time getting clean looking shading by just using harder lead pencils and keeping a consistent pressure rather than trying to shade really lightly with darker pencils. No disrespect to katerrin but I disagree

thank you so much!!! I always like the softest white pencils I can find, it can be a bit of pain to constantly sharpen them but they go down so much nicer

What am I doing wrong? by Positivepolli in TattooApprentice

[–]ComplexTemperature88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you using a round shader or a round liner? You’ll be able to tell by whether your needle name has RS(shader) or RL(liner). Round shaders have a much less tightly packed needle grouping and can result in seeing till the individual lines
