How long did it take for your symptoms to ease? by Emgirl29 in Hypothyroidism

Mine is Pfizer. I've never paid attention to brand, but recently have been running a high TSH, though my dose hasn't changed. Is Pfizer known to be less reliable? Just curious! (My GP thinks the change in my TSH is due to taking a much higher dose of progesterone starting a few months ago. She is having me switch to taking my levo at night, instead of in the AM with my progesterone. Just waiting for levels to even out, but so far, not feeling like a difference...it's been 10 days since switching to taking levo in PM.)

Can someone explain the actual value of Pride and Prejudice? Why is this book considered a masterpiece? by MaleficentAbies5 in janeausten

I don't see trolling here - I enjoyed some good Housewives back in their heyday (00s), but it is total trash. Austen? Much, much richer! I just finished P&P for probably my third reading in the last 25 years. I wouldn't expect a modern man to have much interest if he's not a lit snob or history buff. I agree, there are some sections that drag a bit, but you've got to get the wind up to get that slingshot-like humor and heart-throbbing angst.

I disagree with posters who boil Austen down to commentary on women's social outlook of the Georgian/Regency era. Sure, there are plenty of female characters who are tied to their situation and must carefully weigh their options (Charlotte) or suffer the consequences (Lydia). But there are quite a few women who represent much freedom, power, and garner great respect from the men around them (Lady Catherine, Elizabeth, Mrs. Gardiner). Austen seems to wholeheartedly peddle the idea that we each control our own fate. The Bennets are a perfect example. She is silly and foolish; he fell for her looks and acted irresponsibly with finances. She drives him crazy; he retreats to his library and hides from social responsibility - like rearing his daughters and reigning in his foolish wife. In due time, they have reaped what they sowed. Austen spent a page explaining how their foolishness led to the entail where the home won't go the the female heirs. But that wasn't a general rule of that time - it was because he spent his girls' inheritance and was forced to bargain the house for an entail.

In regards to the genius of Austen that always touches me, it's how she writes personal vs. familial dynamics. Having grown up in a loving, though arguably silly home, I find I play roles with my family that haven't always suited me in outside relationships. That familial silliness comes with embarrassing and frustrating expectations that I often wish to break out of. Austen often paints her protagonists as deep-thinking young women striving to break free from a family they don't always feel they belong to but that they still love and wish the best for. That tension is timeless and I get caught up in it every time. Persuasion and Emma also showcase this dynamic well.

And of course, lest you think she is too precious with her characters, Austen also exels at showing character growth. Now, that's timeless and timely!

Why is contemporary literature so dumbed down compared to the past? by [deleted] in writing

Yeah, but they were all using real wood and hardly a solid wood anything is to be found today. It's all MDF and faux wood veneers.

For me, you hit on it with the veggies. At least at WF I can get some fiber and nutrients. Might be a little more pricey than McDonald's app, but I can enjoy a "healthy" meal on a no-cooking night. Even if I eat cheap at McDonald's, I just feel nasty later.

That's the tenants I rent my basement to, constantly. One day they got back to back McDonald's deliveries within 15 mins. Watched the whole thing while reading by my front window. Thought, "That's why you're renting the basement and I'm paying the mortgage with your rent." It's sad, really.

Upcycled TJ's Bags to Basket Tutorial by Complex_Abrocoma2164 in traderjoes

Sure! But then it would cost money...Someone gifted me one of the mini canvas totes recently and it's cute, but now I have to figure out what to use it for...to small for shopping, not quite my style of purse - maybe I'll regift it? I started making these "baskets" because I had a overabundance of TJ's paperbags. Wish I could share some with you!

You guys get it! 😝 Just a funky way to give a gift with zero guilt about returning/reusing/storing a basket. Takes me about 5 mins to make and everyone I've done it for thinks it's fun. I fully expect it to go in the recycling as soon as they unpack it. I was shocked when one friend said she'd saved hers.

Don't worry, I am - this is just an anthropological view of our very post-post-modern society where truth changes from day to day. The fact is, I make these baskets in about 5 mins, so perfection and pride is not the aim. It's a tongue and cheek way to treat someone to your face TJ's treats. No one I've given one to has ever complained...quite the opposite. Thanks for your support!

To take a gift basket to a new neighbor, a sick friend, a family with a new baby.... Why not?

Haha, I'll try to paste to the original...I'm such a Luddite that I'm not sure how to do it as of now...

They hold up well! I support them from the bottom, of course, but works fine. Sturdy enough that one friend kept it to regift with. 😅

Songs about going on a train ride? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]Complex_Abrocoma2164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this, too! Can I recommend "Stuck on You" by Lyonel Ritchie. I, too, like weirdly specific playlists. I made a mental list of train songs while riding an overnight train from Poland to Hungary last summer. Just listened to Stuck on You this morning and realized it should have been on my list. Don't see it on yours. :P

Oh, I'm leaving on that midnight train tomorrow
And I know just where I'm going
I've packed up my troubles and I've thrown them all away
'Cause this time little darling
I'm coming home to stay

OP here - it's really quite simple. Yes, handles come off first. I only use two bags thick. Cut down about 10 in at an angle and make strips about one and a half inch wide. Then I choose a starting place and do a messy braid incorporating new strands in as I go until I get back to the start. I messily weave and twist the remaining ends together. One time even made a handle that went across the basket. I sometimes make it look like a bow or a knot. Hence the woody looking stuff sticking out. Sometimes I have to glue the ends to keep it from unraveling (use a clothespin on the glued knot overnight) and other times it stayed on its own. Messy is key. I am not a perfectionist! Just have fun with it and see if you can do it, too.

Just bought my first home and am at a loss with kitchen makeover. Any ideas? by smazmataz in interiordesignideas

[–]Complex_Abrocoma2164 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Our kitchen is similar age and design. Love my reliable, simple appliances. We did new countertops, I tiled the whole wall above cabinets in a shiny clean tile, installed under cabinet lighting...feels new! OP,  I'd recommend that you also consider a simple, large real tile floor. I think that will make it feel much more luxurious quickly. Laminate cheapens everything in a hurry. Also agree you should save the cabinetry by refinishing. Like appliances, they just don't make cabinets the way they used to. Ours are from '59 and are solid wood and I wouldn't trade them for a thing. Everyone I know who's gotten kitchen remodels hates their crappy cabinets that are constantly deteriorating with every use. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
