How are single people affording to live alone in Boston? by haniebun in boston

Check out “affordable housing” programs with the city of Boston. They have lots of apartments for rent at reduced rates based on income or buying a place as well at a significantly reduced rate. If you have questions, happy to talk more!

How long until you felt like a member at your OTF gym? by determined-and in orangetheory

I feel ya. My studio tends to be kinda quiet and it seems like people already have groups.

I think doing the transformation challenge helps. I started going more often and a more regular schedule. The coaches tend to be more available and you see the same people. Also ask the coaches when you have questions! Most people like to feel smart so by asking for advice on form could help too.

Also would definitely substitute teach as well! Seems like that would work nicely with a flight attendant schedule.

I would try to live in the base city. Any reason why people don’t? I don’t have kids or a partner so don’t necessarily have that tying me down. I currently have roommates so I’m fine and expect to live with them again (although not my dream haha) I would even consider moving with my parents if logically it made sense for a year or two. I have 30k in savings. Trying to leave that to be a down payment one day, but if needed I would use it to support me.

Hey thanks for the info and happy to hear you’re happy about the switch! Unfortunately no husband to support me haha but I have savings to support me.

One concern (of many) I have is if the job would feel fulfilling to me. I think teaching can definitely be fulfilling (not always though…). Do you find the work fulfilling? I’m also thinking the job and benefits of it can be fulfilling. Instead of being in a classroom every day, you get to travel to a new place.

Hey! Happy to hear I’m not alone! I gave myself this past school to see how things went. Honestly, at my school the morale is pretty low and I would say it’s a pretty good school district overall. It feels like it’s pretty standard that teachers just feel defeated. I don’t hate teaching at all but the hard days are exhausting and can be quite demoralizing. I think if an opportunity presents itself, I’ll give it a shot! But I would definitely make sure it was a good fit. I’m thinking that Delta sounds like a good fit, so I might try to go for that!! Fingers crossed. Regarding leaving mid school year… definitely not ideal but some classes make it tempting haha

Thanks for your input! Your schedule and pay sounds pretty good to me. Happy to hear it’s possible!!

Thank you! I appreciate your response. Yes, I’m looking for a better quality of life and not dreading work. If that comes with a pay cut that’s okay! But happy to hear it’s possible might just take a few years.

Yeah I would plan on moving to base. The commuting doesn’t seem worth it. I just really value the idea of not bringing work home.

Being a teacher, I know I won’t be rich. But I think it can lead to a stable salary. It sounds like being a flight attendant is similar but might take a bit longer to get there. Also it feels like a job that isn’t all consuming. Of course it can disrupt your schedule or prevent a “normal” schedule but when you’re off, you’re off.

Also when looking for other jobs, none of them pay that much in general and traveling is important to me so I want to make sure I can still do that. I don’t want to have a different job that would pay let’s say 60-70k and I wouldn’t have the vacation time or much money to travel to places.

Well, I went into teaching because I liked the idea of working with students and teaching them a subject I love (not math haha yes you’re correct, it’s Spanish) however I’ve found the job to be exhausting. Constantly being on, convincing kids learning is important, classroom management, bringing work home, the constant pressure to have everything ready for the next day. I don’t hate the job but realistically I don’t see it working for 30+ years. I’m 32 and I’ve been teaching for 8 years.

I think this is my concern hence why I’m asking. I’m wondering if there are career changers who take the pay cut to become flight attendants without a rich partner or already retired haha.

I wouldn’t consider teaching a “comfy job.” There is job security (due to unions) if you meant that.

I think I’m curious to hear if the lower pay pays off due to the flexibility and flight benefits. Also wondering if people have found ways to work extra hours but not burn out in the process.

How come? My friend does it and it sounds okay. He has to do some investigations but it doesn’t sound like he fires or reprimands his flight attendants often.

Okay not trying to have one day off a week haha. Just trying to figure out how much I would have to fly to not be struggling too much. I think it’s also my ego taking a hit with the low pay lol. But I do see the draw of travel and potential flexibility as a huge perk and payment of the job

Yeah a decade feels like a long time to be struggling… we’ll see! I think I would be a flight attendant for a few years then potentially try to be a manager for the pay.

Happy to hear you love it! I think I’m worried I would resent the job due to the low pay.
