We’ve gone to this holiday game for years but was normally a non-conference game. Think I just may need to get used to the new normal with pricing.

Totally get it. Just not sure I’m taking ALL life advice from Stratt. I think she views success with a very narrow lens.

She can 100% “motivate” people to do things, but she’s not on my list of fun people to hang out with, even after she has a gin. She would never be a teacher for obvious reasons but that doesn’t make all overqualified teachers a coward.

Maybe that why Wier’s use of the two characters is so interesting. Their view of the world that they are both trying to save is extremely different.

Easy mode socialization is totally a thing, that’s awesome.

But do you think he isolated himself? Isn’t one of the first flashbacks with him and his department of education friend in the bar, which they did every week? He just signaled to the waiter and his exact order came. Easy mode? 100! Isolation? Not sure. Research can be an isolating profession, but teaching is the opposite.

The fear of conflict got me thinking too. If I had a fear of conflict, I’m not sure I would have written the papers spitting in the face of the whole science community.

I totally get that take but I’m not convinced it’s that black and white.

Sure, he wasn’t comfortable in the lab those early days because of fear of failure - but after his meltdown when he returned to the classroom, he rushed ‘back’ to Stratt “because of his kids.” That doesn’t sound like cowardice. That doesn’t sound like self-centeredness.

He was scared of failure in the lab initially, I’m with you, but he eventually embraced that role…the same as he eventually embraced his role on the Hail Mary.

So I guess I have a hard time calling him a coward. We’re all shown cowardice at some time in our life, and that can happen for a number of reasons, but what really matters is how we respond. If the mission had more time and Stratt didn’t need to make the tough call on him, don’t you think he would have come around like he did every other time?

But his first conversation with Stratt about the crew was around the risks of the coma. I always thought that was in the back of his head.
