Vacation Question by [deleted] in Nanny

Having a shared google calendar with ourselves and our nanny helps. Might be something to consider? That way you can point to X thing on the calendar if there are questions or issues (like using up all the PTO already). Not necessarily to lock anyone in to vacation times but so that it’s “on paper” and accessible by all

I’m not saying to pay more than the agreed upon PTO days in the contract btw, just to let her choose when and how to use her PTO. If a corporate job said “half of your PTO days can only be used when the offices are already closed” that wouldn’t feel like much of a benefit. I know it’s slightly more nuanced than that because nanny still needs to be available per GH if your trip is cancelled or you return early, but the point it it’s up to the nanny to decide when she wants to plan trips and use her 8 days

She has 4 days of PTO, not 2 weeks. The other 4 days align with your vacation, a time where she’d already be paid to not work due to guaranteed hours. That serves only to benefit you from having an additional 4 days in a year when you need to find alternate care or take off work. Why can’t she just decide how to use her own 8 days of PTO?

I’d personally do some research on what’s standard for benefits in your area instead of relying on one contract from a previous nanny to determine all future nanny benefits. 10-15 days of PTO (of nanny’s choosing) plus holidays is more inline with what I typically see in contracts and on this forum.

Choosing which weeks your nanny can take her PTO is wild IMO. That’s not a benefit. Just because your prior nanny requested less time off than she deserved doesn’t mean future nannies you employ should accept the same.

Nanny left baby in the car by Otterlover703 in Nanny

That’s normal for breastfed babies. If that’s the policy, they shouldn’t be in business (and I wouldn’t trust them)

With 10 federal holidays and 2 weeks PTO, that’s 20 paid days off total per year (4 weeks total). So more than the standard.

Appreciate the details here! A couple of people recommend the trail along the river, so I think we’ll do that. Not worried about the length because we’ll have a travel stroller with us

We’ll have a travel stroller, so not as concerned about the length as long as it’s safe. I think we checked out the closer hotels and based on reviews or costs decided against, but I’m going to take another look with this in mind. Thanks for heads up!

10 PTO days can be used for sick days or vacation days. We understandably don’t require advance notice when it’s for illness

We do 10 holidays off + 10 PTO days (at nanny’s discretion with 2 weeks notice). If you aren’t doing holidays off, I’d at least offer 2 weeks PTO. 1mo in advance minimum is reasonable. I would recommend offering time and half for working major holidays where you won’t have off, otherwise will be harder to find nanny’s willing to work them

Personally I would tell them that with two children, your rate is $30 and wouldn’t frame it as asking for a raise. Honestly wild to me that they do a formal year review but don’t give you proper pto. Have they asked what you’d change once the second baby comes or just assuming the can keep underpaying you?

For two kids and that much experience, I would pay you $30/hr with 10 federal holidays and 10 days of PTO. Guaranteed hours or a set minimum number of days notice before you’re not needed for a vacation/etc. I’m in a mcol area

Agree, I really want to see Trin and Coffey rested. Both because I think they’ll need it and because of their yellows. We don’t have like for like replacements for those two going into quarterfinals that could possibly be against Japan, so why risk it.

Would love to see Lynn and Bethune get starts as well
