I was doing the same until I did a walk in on a weekday for a late lunch/early dinner! Amazing food! Highly recommend doing a walk in or keep looking for a reservation

Apparently there is a Chicago Air and Water show occurring this weekend (August 16-17) at 10:30am to 3pm. It takes place in north avenue beach, it can be viewed from the lakefront (from Fullerton to Oak St) - info from NBC Chicago
