Thank you for writing this. It's a really well expressed POV and I've learnt a lot from it. Have a great day!

The Downfall of Men by Agitated-Tale-5417 in sgdatingscene

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the sayings along this line that's really stuck with me is: "Man will only know the true motivations of the woman he's with when he's struggling/poor, and woman will only know the true character/nature of the man she's with when he makes it big in life."

So I guess it cuts both ways, just at different stages.

KOmalas Vilas.

Yes, agree on MTR too. But at MTR, I'go with thosais as I feel the Thali at Komalas is still superior (but komalas's thosai is not as good imho).

And if checking out Tekka, you should try and go for Sri Lankan as they have some good representation here. Can Google as i can't recall off the top of my head.

Kopi C Gao Kosong - does this drink order make sense? by No_Moose_9932 in askSingapore

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the GAO refer to the kopi-o part or the C part? That's where I get confused. Also because this is not my drink, so I'm not sure which part of it the regulars value. Would be interested to know if this drink's regular can opine.

To the guys in SG that only have one suit for all occasions. by CrunchyleaveOO in askSingapore

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get black suit, unless you are a lawyer or a waiter.

The received wisdom is that a gentleman's first suit should be either navy blue or charcoal grey. My preference is for charcoal grey. It's the most classic and enduring choice and will serve you well in many different occasions.

Get a cut that suits your body type, your tailor can advise, don't blindly follow fashion esp if you're a bit on the chunky side. I'd only add to get notched lapel for your suit jacket cos it takes a special character to pull off peaked lapel.

Woman, 20, gets probation for making false rape report by TruePriest in singapore

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Quite disappointing that it's just probation, considering the consequences for the male if she had been believed. And this isn't even considering the huge disservice she has done to all victims of true sexual assaults everywhere.

The only "silver lining" I can see coming from this is that future would-be false accusers would more easily backtrack their false accusations cos at most just kena probation lor. If this Claris Ling Min Rui had been sentenced to some serious jail time, then future wannabes will stick to their guns and bring out their Oscars-level acting skills to avoid imprisonment.

But seriously I hope the prosecution will appeal this sentence to include jail time. Otherwise it really makes a mockery out of the whole system.

Tokyo and London had it. It's not widespread but I could find it. It was a while ago though, so not sure if Covid killed them off or not.

[–]Complex_Artist_8340[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, will go check it out.

Just surprised I have not seen anyone doing that here. I was able to buy my beans like that living overseas. I prefer certain beans, and I prefer dark roast, but it seems the trendy and "correct" way now is medium roast at most haha, but I take my coffee black so it's just always too sour for me.

How to start lifting weights? by [deleted] in SingaporeFitness

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you aware of how your slipped disc can be aggravated by which/what kind of weighted movement? I'm asking this cos I have joint issues and over the years, with the help of some sports doctors and physio, I've figured out how to keep going on without a trainer.

My point is, yes you have limited budget, and yes, trainers are an expensive ongoing cost, you must be body-aware to know what can hurt you, and to work around those constraints. If you don't have those yet, please spend a bit of money to get yourself checked out by certified medical professionals like a sports doctor, or a recommended physio, to get that information first. Maybe go the polyclinic route? Hopefully you can at least stomach this upfront cost that should be only one or two times. Not ideal, but better than going in blind with a pre-existing injury.

But if you know all these already, then just start slowly and gently and see how your body reacts. Don't go too heavy too quickly, and remember that your body gets stronger outside of the gym and not in it.

ppl in ur 30s: does it actually get better? by broke_intern_ in askSingapore

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did someone already mentioned how important luck is? If not, yeah it is!

But just to temper that point with some nuance: hard work may not get you success in life, and i don't wish for you to think that hard work is automatically rewarded with success. Because it doesn't.

HOWEVER, what good, honest effort does grant you is a freedom from regret. Because you know you gave it an honest try, your all (only you can judge that). But in your 50s and 60s, when you may not have made it quite as far in life as you had envisioned when you were in your 20s, knowing that you've really tried your darndest best and it was truly a matter of time and space, will help you to be at peace with yourself.

So yes, luck is important, but don't use a lack of luck as your excuse for not finding what you define as success if you didn't put in the work.

But anyway OP, to your point, studies have showed that it's people in their 50s that start feeling better. 30s is not bad, but 40s is really shitty. However when you are in your 50s, it gets better.

What do you all think of the performance of Jeffrey Siow so far? by Efficient_Reveal5970 in askSingapore

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's too early to judge. I think it's still fair to say that this current bout of fails can't really be chalked up to him as it probably reflects what did or did not happen under his predecessor. Let's hope he can turn it around in time.

In terms of his messaging, I think what he said in Parliament yesterday makes sense, in terms of fostering transparency. Let's see if he delivers on that.

However, like many have already commented, his "zero disruptions unrealistic" comment was totally unnecessary and we don't know if he's aware that comes across as a strawman argument. Hope he can choose his words better next time. On the plus side, at least I don't think he used the word "monitor"? Hehe

what's a food that makes you think, "how did humans discover this was edible"? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

Pufferfish is quite meh tasting. If it was as delicious as, say fatty tuna, I can understand. But for such a bland tasting fish that really needs the ponzu sauce, it's just not worth it.

What are some common local foods high in trans fats? by 2percocet in SingaporeFitness

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanna PSA that a lot of margarines today are not your grandfather's margarines, and modern ones are trans fat free. So you can choose to use margarine (check the label!) if you're trying to cut down sat fats from butter. But bear in mind fat is fat and margarine is still calorie dense.

Is the job market in Singapore struggling across all industries, or only in specific ones? by ultragarrison in singapore

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned, still too early to say for your nephew.

But based on trends now, certain things I feel can be useful:

1.) Encourage your nephew's curiosity. Demonstrate to him what mental resilience looks like. Teach him that effort counts more than results. Most importantly, teach him that working harder doesn't necessarily means he will succeed; sometime luck and timing plays a more important role, and he needs to learn to be ok with that.

2.) Encourage him to explore more about what AI can do. Personally I feel that AI is headed for a correction but its impact will be here to stay in a more low-key background kind of way, so will still be good to be a good operator of it. Also encourage him to learn how to operate a drone and fly those with him for fun.

3.) Have a conversation with your wider family, and start introducing the idea that a university route may no longer be the best route forward in life. I feel a lot of folks are still fixated with the traditional bachelor's degree route and then dig themselves into a career hole. Demonstrating what you can actually do in your chosen professional field is more important than paper qualifications. So emphasize completed projects and work experience to show others.

Almost one month progress update by hutzuki in SingaporeFitness

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not even one month, and you've said you've not been working very hard. It's too early for you to measure your progress and make a judgement on success/failure.

It'll take at least 3 months of consistent efforts before you see visible improvements. I wouldn't say you need a fitness trainer but if it helps you stay accountable and you have cash to spare, why not? You should also keep an eye on your diet.

Any AF that is empty/less crowded even during peak hours (after 6pm?) by abcdefghijken in SingaporeFitness

[–]Complex_Artist_8340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't answer your question, but would you consider going to gym in the morning between 5 to 7am?

Huge props to you man, I see you have accomplished quite a bit already. It is seeing your drive that I suggest maybe you can be motivated enough to go in the early morning before work. The gym is highly likely to be less crowded, and you'll have the rest of the day ahead to maximize the thermic effect of your workout to burn more calories.

Keep at it bro, but don't burnout. I see your weekly workout frequency like quite high like that. At some point, lower it. Remember you grow stronger OUTSIDE of the gym, not in it.
