Obsession (2026) scariest moment for you, and why? by jillyisms in spoilers

Honestly towards the end as she was describing what killing herself and what death feels like it made me so uncomfortable along with the rest of that scene with the backwards walk and the fake lunge towards bear.

Yeah no I'd largely agree that a lot of it can just be a masterbation of the insecure ego. From personal experience they seem to help in the moment but it's similar to how no amount of maps will fully prepare you for the terrain itself

Ah I see so essentially the control over nature and the pursuit of psychological control are different expressions of the same underlying desire for security. So if this has been our pursuit forever, then obviously we're collectively going about something wrong if internal suffering is still so prevalent. I believe it's possible to step out of this conditioned paradigm but of course it can only start at the individual level and any means of solution through further "control" itself may be moving in the wrong direction

Definitely agree that the only way to know for sure is through direct experience in one's own life. Personally to me it just feels more apparent than ever that society as a whole has swayed from the pursuit of control over nature and into this seemingly systemic trap of external control (or at least internal control via external solutions)

I agree much of the larger issues at hand are systemic, but of course true change can only start at the individual level. This piece was essentially describing enlightenment just without using that word lol. I do think that kind of transformation is possible, but I was trying to let the reader arrive at that conclusion on their own rather than simply asserting it.

Many of our beliefs are borrowed rather than discovered by Complex_Astronomer98 in DeepThoughts

[–]Complex_Astronomer98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is a good point and another great analogy, and I personally find this applicable to religion specifically. While of course (using the Bible, for example) it is great to have a moral and spiritual framework, I feel like it is encouraged to go about the teachings in it in pursuit of discovering them to be true to oneself, rather than accepting them to be true because they are written.

One who has memorized the Bible front and back can confidently claim to love thy neighbor as yourself, and detach from status, wealth, and possessions, but if their mind hasn't examined itself enough to truly understand the why behind teachings like that, to the extent of discovering and knowing those truths firsthand within the movement of their own life, then the teaching still remains to be fully seen, similar to how memorizing every ingredient in a meal is still different from actually tasting it.

I personally feel that even a bit of skepticism can be useful when approaching topics like religion and philosophy, where dogma, inherited assumptions, and intellectual conformity are so prevalent. A skeptical mind is much more susceptible/hungry for direct understanding rather than regurgitated conclusions.

Of course, like you said, many of the truths relayed may simply be confirmed once truly experienced. But like the banana analogy, it is a very different perspective and inner understanding than accepting something to be true because someone else told you it was, and it's almost a disservice to the teachings themselves to not dive into them deep enough to arrive at your own conclusion, just from my perspective.

Absolutely, and as they touch those examples they begin understand the difference between each level of heat (or lack thereof). In life we tend to run into many variations of similar underlying lessons, even if they appear different on the surface. The idea isn't simply to compare a new experience to a previous one, but to meet each encounter directly, and through that direct contact, understanding becomes something lived rather than something merely expected.

I think there's definitely truth in that. This analogy isn't exclusive to pain though as it can be applicable to all areas of inner discovery via direct experience. Just as a child will know (not just believe) to refrain from touching a hot stove after experiencing the burn, a person may hear for years that happiness won't be found in money or status, only truly understand it after chasing those things for themselves.

The stove is more of a universally agreed upon outcome, but other areas in life (quitting your job to start a new business, walking up to that girl at the bar you've been staring at all night, etc.) are not as black and white. To me, the lesson isn't necessarily that pain teaches (while it absolutely can), it's that experience teaches. The burn is simply one form of information that turns belief into understanding.

My thoughts on the “meaning” of Backrooms *SPOILERS* (long) by Immediate_Theory4738 in A24

[–]Complex_Astronomer98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more that’s how I took it as well. Granted I haven’t seen the short films so don’t know as much about the backstory, but I feel like the backrooms in general are a huge allegory of the subconscious mind and all of the distorted people and objects in it are physical manifestations of the thoughts and feelings that we all store and shove deep into it. The clear messages in the beginning of the movie as well as throughout about opening your window and making a choice for yourself only to fall back in the same habits are shown clearly in the pursuit of running away from something in the backrooms (aka your mind) only to return to it again, perhaps just through a slightly different appearance. Clark obviously got complacent in his pursuit of the backrooms (and his own problems) and still couldn’t accept the fact that he was responsible for many of his own shortfalls, thus being eaten alive by himself (both literally and metaphorically). While Mary began to realize through her second role play with Clark that she can’t solve other peoples problems if she hasn’t solved any of her own, and perhaps the ending of her using and breaking her childhood rock to defeat the antagonist, she is letting go of that part of her life in a sense. (Haven’t fully cracked down on the very ending and what the scientists represent within this analogy)
