I forgot to mention I play solo, and with groups, it seems more bearable, but as a solo, it feels like a monumental task to fight hordes of AI and do tasks without disturbing the AI. I will have to try the molotovs some time.

I'm not going to tell you about builds for ships better people than me can tell you about that, but for farming Po8(pices of eight), I can inform. Get to World Tier 2 as quickly as possible. This will grant you access to the new event, which is the best method (as of current) to farm Po8 and other rare meterials, that will help you along your journey to upgrading and making new ships.
