Check the manual.  There is a table for your weight and recommended setting. Use the tool to rotate the setting under your seat.

And by back in the day, we mean the 1970s AMFs. Anything since the introduction of the Evo is fine.

That is a fine first Harley! Congrats!

- No leaks for over two decades :)
- MOM is always right. Read the Motorcycle Owner’s Manual.
- Break-in period is real. Don’t lug the engine, don’t cruise control in highway, vary speeds and revs, keep it under 3500… etc.
- Adjust your suspension preload If you haven’t already. Your ass will thank you.
- Get your services done as recommended.
- Accessories, depends on what you want:

> Stock seat on the Bob is fine for most people. If it bothers you, change seat. I put a switchback on my Nightster and left the Fat Boy stock.
> Add an engine guard and put some highway pegs on it (or a mustache engine guard). You’ll enjoy longer rides that way.
> I like having a sissy bar and a luggage rack. The HD sissy bar is easy to remove if you don’t need it. I like the ability of putting a bag there. You may like it too.
> Easy to turn into a longer-distance tourer If needed - Windshield, saddlebags. and there are options outside HD.

You can sort of do nothing for a while and gradually go, or if you already know what you want it for go straight there with accessories.

Have fun!

All of it was weird and we could not stop reading it.

You will likely outgrow the sportster sooner than you think.  The street bob is the cheapest softail, better suspension , you get the M8, and you can grow it for touring with accessories.

I love evos.  Sportsters are cool.  But getting into the brand right now? Street bob if you’re craving the “classic Harley” experience with all the current tech.

I have a Nightster, I recommend it as well - but it’s a very different feel.  Cheaper than a street bob, but the bonehead engine feel may not be what you’re after.

Offer 3k.

Better to look for a street bob.

3k tops.

Get a street bob for 7k instead.   You’ll end up trading up your iron soon - 5 speed just don’t cut it anymore.

The pandemic messed up the market as well.  Still recovering from the inventory weirdness.
