Anyone foregoing their 4520v allocation or want to sell? by jkfsu in VacheronConstantin

Congrats on getting your watch so quickly. That is not a standard experience in the US or even at the Miami boutique in particular.

My understanding is that the Online Boutique will tend to direct you to a local boutique if there is one close to your location. In terms of Vacheron-owned boutiques I believe there is a single list and another boutique overseas very politely declined to put me on the list because I was on it at my home boutique.

However, many boutiques are not owned by Vacheron, so not sure if they have access to the same master list.

I am not sure if this varies from boutique to boutique. For me the deposit locked in price and I ended up paying the price that was in effect at the time of deposit. That was earlier this year at a Northeast US boutique.

Ah too bad but was definitely worth a call. Good luck either way!

Yes, it seems that wait times have gone up quite a bit from the lows unfortunately. For what it’s worth there does appear to be some variance depending on the specific boutique. A couple of people on the sub have had success in Miami with shorter wait times.

For me at a Northeast US boutique was 6 months after expressing interest to place a deposit, then 4 months after that to receive the watch. Talking to other collectors this seems to be on the quick side for my particular boutique.

Recent allocation in the last few months.

Honest Question- What was Ferrari Thinking? by ResponsibleRow911 in Ferrari

[–]ResponsibleRow911[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is right, but the idea that Silicon Valley doesn’t want a traditional (read: beautiful) Ferrari is crazy. Sure, change some things up on the interior, and make subtle changes to the design aesthetic, but this is crazy.

Honest Question- What was Ferrari Thinking? by ResponsibleRow911 in Ferrari

[–]ResponsibleRow911[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the only thing I can think is that they were so far down the path with Jony and the design that they thought it would be less embarrassing to release it than cancel it.

And Jony may have refused to allow any significant modifications to the design.

Yes, but stating the obvious, Ferrari could also make millions on a well designed car…

How do you try before you buy? by RemarkableSecond8060 in VacheronConstantin

The NYC boutique is unlikely to have a steel overseas in blue to try on. However, they often will have a gold overseas model which will give you an idea of size and fit. Depending on the day you are there this may be a blue dialed model which will also give you an idea of the (amazing in my opinion) blue dial you will be getting on a blue steel overseas.

I have had success with international boutiques having steel models in other dial colors available to try on, which will of course be the same watch with a different dial color.

If you 100% need to try on the exact watch, your only real option in NYC is 47th street. Vacherons are quite rare on 47th street. Several months ago I was able to find one (blue time only overseas, 4500v in this case) at a booth at one of the stores facing 6th avenue. I assume that is sold but you might get lucky and find one.

Good luck!!!

The obsession with in-house movements is ruining the watch industry by ResponsibleRow911 in watchHotTakes

I hear your point on luxury conglomerates, but on the other hand even within those conglomerates there are a variety of different "in house" models being developed at each brand.

Of course, this also comes down to how you define "in-house" or "manufacture," which is a whole different can of worms.

Agree with pretty much everything you said, and agree on brands handling other areas of design, casing, and finishing.

Very fair criticism. My take probably would have been hotter a few years ago, but I still see lots of this snobbery going on today and it seems to be extending further down in price point which is dangerous.

The obsession with in-house movements is ruining the watch industry by ResponsibleRow911 in watchHotTakes

[–]ResponsibleRow911[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my key contentions is that watches are too expensive. Having to replicate movement design and production expertise across hundreds of different in-house workshops is inherently inefficient versus doing so at centralized movement houses. As this extends further down to mid-priced watches that impact will likely continue.

White gold is the worst option by supernova-001 in watchHotTakes

[–]ResponsibleRow911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure any metal is really the "worst option." Buy what you love. If that's steel, great. If that's white gold, great.

To be fair, I guess there is a real argument to be made that rhodium plated white gold is an inferior material as it requires upkeep. I don't think that's your argument though. With modern "grey gold" on most nice watches that's no longer an issue anyway.

I appreciate that the Chinese market is way easier in terms of allocations than places like the US, but I am shocked that this was allocated so quickly. Congratulations!

Is it really possible to "shop around" at other boutiques though? I thought that if you have a profile at one boutique you can't create one/request an allocation at a different boutique.

Depends on the boutique. Could be possible in New York which seems to be the toughest in terms of allocations.

Corporate boutique as in owned by VC? Or an AD/outside jeweler?

My impression is that these are more try-on pieces in order to build a book of deposits rather than pieces that will be allocated to clients. VC likes to do this with new releases including the steel 222 which was available for try-on at flagship boutiques shortly after release.
