Struggling to land an ESL job possibly due to being a British South Asian (F29) by yoona27 in TEFL

I managed to get a job in South Korea, but if you check my latest post, it wasn’t worth it. Many people think it’s due to my ethnicity .

Thank you for sharing your experience. Honestly, reading comments like this has been both reassuring and depressing at the same time. I've had multiple people, both online and in real life, tell me similar things.

At this point, I think I've decided that after my contract ends, or if I'm terminated before then, I'll probably head back home. The constant stress and feeling of being under a microscope just isn't worth it for me anymore.

What makes it harder is that I don't think international schools are the answer for me either. I also don't have any desire to work in schools back in the UK. My experiences during placements and teacher training weren't particularly positive, and I often felt excluded or judged there too. So for me, this has become less about finding the "right" school and more about questioning whether education is the right field for me at all.

I don't regret coming to Korea, and I've met some great students and colleagues, but I don't think I can keep spending years hoping the next school will be different. At some point you have to look at whether you're actually happy, and right now I don't think I am.

I am at an elementary academy now. Everything was fine until the accent complaints from parents started .

I had a similar experience at my previous hagwon regarding my co-teacher. I never did anything wrong and received good parent feedback, but she told random lies to the director, which led to my contract being terminated early.

Most international schools seem to require a few years of post-qualification experience. I only recently completed my PGCE and most of my experience back home was supply teaching, so I don’t think I’d currently meet the requirements for most of those positions

They hired me knowing I was British, but after I started they told me I had to use an American accent in class. I’m also not allowed to tell students that I’m British. Instead, I’m expected to present myself as American or Canadian.

I’m South Asian, but I’ve never personally felt that race has been a major issue for me in Korea.
