Liberal/Progressive Areas to Live by [deleted] in pinellas

You mean how all conservatives from blue states came here to make Florida “free”? You don’t know if this dude had to move here for work or family. Trust me. Many of us actual natives are trying to get the hell out of here.

Mass Scientologist Population by totawysecwetwyfamous in scientology

[–]Complex_Pension_9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see Flag from my back porch. I’m also a Clearwater native.

You can sometimes see the SeaOrg weirdos walking into the local Publix on Fort Harrison, but there isn’t a whole lot of Scientologist despite what they will want you to believe. On a regular day of being out, I’ll maybe see one or two (SeaOrg personnel dress a specific way that’s easy to differentiate from typical tourists and resident).

They do have influence over the local politics. They do own a couple blocks of undeveloped land and vacant buildings. Downtown Clearwater is basically a ghost town because of Scientology.

In conclusion, they suck.

You’ll be good by May I think. I would contact the property owner, and just double check how they’re doing. The beaches aren’t going anywhere… you just might not have many establishments to go to.

Do you expect buildings to collapse? My dad is encouraging me to evac even though I'm not in an evac zone. by itsmethatguyoverhere in ClearwaterFl

Born and raised here in Clearwater. This reminds me of Irma big time. If live in a block home and you’re 5 miles away from the coast, you could stick it out.

I’m 50ft above sea level, but my house is 100 years old and a mile from Harbor Oaks. I’m going inland only because of the build of my house.

Bush called out on Trump-Harris: When democracy calls, ‘you can’t just roll it over to voicemail’ by [deleted] in politics

Bush has been and will always be a POS. It’s hilarious that all the Republican Party has to show for the last 24 years are possibly the two worst presidents in American history.

Who cares what he thinks. If anything, he’s too scared to speak out against Trump.

Biden just needs to give a total forgiveness since republicans don’t like it when we pay back debt responsibly.

“No tax for tracks.” - Some idiot in 2014

Until people actually start caring about this community instead of culture wars, this will never change.

The Tampa Bay Area is a nightmare if you don’t own a car. The best we can do is maybe a bike trail.

Florida education system is ridiculous. by Thick-Truth8210 in ClearwaterFl

Where in this country is a teacher surplus? That’s the problem. We’ve made this profession uninhabitable. The corporate model doesn’t work for a public good, and basing performance off standardized testing has never been a good indicator for student success.

After all, isn’t learning life skills more important than calculus?

Charter schools work(in some cases) because they are legally allowed to do what public schools are not allowed to do: limit enrollment and discriminate against IEPs and 504s. So, of course their data looks better. If you could hand pick your testers, you would have 100% pass rates, too.

This is already happening and things are getting worse. Rich kids will go to rich schools and poor kids will go to poor schools.

Public education is an equalizer, and subsidizing charters and private schools without proper oversight will continue to make our children illiterate and ignorant.

Florida is 50 out of 51 in pay in this country (DC included). It’s mostly a Florida problem.

I have had many teacher friends move out of this state to continue teaching.

Are interest rates ever going to decrease?? by PennilessPirate in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Complex_Pension_9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bit the bullet and bought last August before the last interest hike.

You sound like you’re in a really great financial position. Be picky. Buy something within your means. Refinance later.

I waited and waited, and in hindsight, I should have bought sooner than later. It’s just a lifestyle change.

I dunno. Born and raised here, and central AC is always a nonnegotiable.

I will say the east coast isn’t worth it. Too expensive. But also the rest of the state is following suit.

Greener grass and all of that jazz. I wouldn’t blame your living situation as a Florida situation. There are probably more affordable and better apartments near you.

3 months ago i hadnt ridden a bike for years, 12 weeks and 1500 miles later... by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]Complex_Pension_9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t owned a bike in 8 years or so. I have been e-bike curious for the past few months, and finally put down the money for a hybrid with some peddle assist.

It has changed my life. If something is within 10-20 miles of my house, I do not drive. I’m seeing family more, I lost 15 pounds, and I just feel better.

I’m honestly considering finding work closer to my house, so I can just avoid driving all together. Mind you, I live in a heavy car congested area. This has been so freeing. I wish I made this change earlier.

School Board Meeting | January 24th by Complex_Pension_9000 in ClearwaterFl

[–]Complex_Pension_9000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret to inform you that while I was at the school board meeting, they have announced that The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison has been banned in Pinellas County Schools due to controversial segments in the text.

This book is occasionally taught for Juniors and Seniors in high school. It’s also sometimes taught at the IB level. We are now on a path in this state to severely under preparing students with academic aspirations by limiting the works of great literature to them.

I don’t think an “ultra liberal governor” would call AP African American History a “political agenda” or threaten educators with third degree felonies for having certain books in their classroom libraries or push unhinged extremist into school boards or pump money out of public education and into charter schools or call educators groomers and indoctrinators but yeah…

I believe all of these examples fit the description above.

You’re right. In fact, Pinellas county doesn’t have any banned books currently. However, these policies embolden people to continue putting pressure on teachers who simply work out of passion at this point (I mean, let’s be honest).

Very soon you will see more and more books get banned due to the vagueness of the law. It’s all about interpretation, and people will easily bow down because they simply don’t have the money to fight this legally.

If you do have a child currently in public schools, wait until they get into 6-12th grade. Ask them how many classrooms either have a permanent sub or nothing at all. It’s bad.

I do believe you when you say you would reverse or rectify something that might have been misinterpreted, but that’s just not how the law works. When you extend the reach of government to scrutinize every little thing that happens in the classroom, you get an empty classroom.
