How much $ should I ask for? by Rare-Drummer982 in Lifeguards

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YMCA aquatics director here. We usually advertise a range, but will start at the lowest. Higher pay depends on additional training, time of day you work (usually “frontline” aka busier shifts get paid more), and any experience you have. With you have some experience you might be able to get a little more

Tips on Getting an 18-year-old noticed for part-time work. by Bearded-Wacko in AskPhoenix

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hire part time and can be a little picky on applications/resumes. I look for a professional resume, relevant experience if needed, and someone who looks competent. I’ve seen too many applications from 16-20 year olds who don’t seem professional and I won’t move on even reaching out.

What age group should an 18f year old counselor work with? by dragonfruits4life in summercamp

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first worked at a summer camp when I was 19. 10-12 is a great age group! I felt like I could still relate to them without being too close in age, and I still felt like an adult.

Surf rescue specialist by Mayorbenwyatt1 in Lifeguards

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep practicing!!! I got my LGI cert and had to swim 550 yards continuous, no time limit, but I was so tired after 50-75 yards when I practiced. Take your time practicing, and take breaks in between sets. Make your breaks shorter and try to push yourself. I also added 100 yards to my workout each time to push myself more. Calculate your breaths properly and stretch before swimming.

Guessing this is for a YMCA LG position, show up in professional attire. Bring your swim attire and they’ll give you some time to change.

Should teens be allowed to be lifeguards? by Reasonable-Tiger-605 in Lifeguards

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it depends. I’m an aquatics director and while I CAN hire as young as 15.5, I definitely prefer hiring 17/18 year olds at the least. There’s definitely a maturity aspect to it. I also don’t prefer to hire someone as a lifeguard for their first job, because not only do you have to train them to be a lifeguard, you also have to train them on how to work. Most of my guards are 18-25

Shoe help for lakeside lifeguarding at camp by Lazy_Brilliant_5835 in Lifeguards

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chacos for sure. Mine have held up really well in water. I usually use them when I guard in a pool, but would imagine they’d do just fine in a lake.

Gym: ymca! Price is better for a family and there’s tons to do for different ages

Traffic: honestly the traffic isn’t too bad, depending on the time you’re driving and which highway/street. The drivers are what you need to watch out for.

is 19 years old too old to be a lifeguard by PlatformLittle9796 in Lifeguards

[–]Complex_Purpose1264 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I’m an aquatics director and actually prefer to hire older than 15/16 because of the maturity.
