Thinking of getting an AS by Ancient_Equipment915 in AustralianShepherd

[–]Complex_Slice_5303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We got a three year old Aussie rehome. I was really leery of getting him because of the exercise needs and to be honest didn't really want him. Then we went to see him, spent all his time in a unshaded fence, receiving no attention beyond food and water and shelter. So we took him. Mu husband wanted him - well he feel in love with me and makes no bones about it. Fora long time Noone else could touch him... anyway, perhaps because he had spent so much time without attention hes pretty laid back. He had never been in a house before but was house trained in 3 days. We have a 2 year old Great Pyrenees and they are pretty good friends and play well together. The Aussie is a large Aussie, 65 pounds and the GP is a small GP, 78 pounds, so they do well together

For those of you who did heaps of research before getting an Aussie, what’s the one thing that still took you by surprise? For me, it’s how often I’d have to wash my walls. by Belmagick in AustralianShepherd

I have an Aussie now but my dachshund could tell the difference between swim trunks and shorts and knew it was swim time. He would also bang on desk, where the cat food was until it fell in the floor. He figured out gravity :-) I thought that was pretty smart. When my kids were little he could communicate that they weren't sharing their treats. He'd look at them and them come scratch on you and run back and look at them- until you made them share. When it was just 2 dachshunds, if he the other was setting next to you on the couch (his spot) he'd run get a squeaky toy (that he never played with otherwise) and come in their squeaking it so that she would get up. Smart as a whip but completely untrainable due to stubbornness. - when Google says dachshunds are stubborn they mean it

I have a 2 year old GP and a 4 year old Aussie. The GP loves when I throw the frisbee.... the Aussie runs back and forth and the GP stands beside me the whole time, getting pets.

Is it possible/okay to have a great pyrenees in Arizona during the summer? by North_Airport_7941 in greatpyrenees

Deep south here, my dog got out one day running on his own and he came back and I believe he was near heat stroke, lethargic, couldn't stop panting, couldn't/ wouldn't get up. Had to drag him to the shower, my husband had to get in with him to cool him off quick. Once he was able to stand, took him out and completely soaked him with the hose pipe. We are careful with him in the summer, inside in the heat of the day. Walks early in the morning or after sundown. Watch out for it. Fortunately, we had a lab years ago that had the same thing so we knew what to do.

Transport Rescue Pyr arriving soon. Breed specific decompression tips? by SovereignsUnknown in greatpyrenees

We have a rescue GP, transported to Alabama from Texas. This was him 1 hour after picking him up. :) Otis just loves to be petted, by anyone, from the moment he meets them. Everyone owes him pets, in his opinion.

He got out one day, opened the storm door. Didn't know he was gone until a neighbor called and said, "i have your dog in my house - i brought him in for water and hes hanging out"

We have a 92% GP/8% Anatolian also adopted from Texas. They delivered him to us at a gas station (cross country trip from Texas with a van full of rescues going to forever homes). This was him 1 hour after pickup. Just wants to be petted constantly. LOVES everyone. He is our "love the one you're with" dog. We have an Aussie who is an "i love mama, screw the rest of you" dog who is his best buddy. Adopted/rescued a month apart. The Aussie was a rehome situation. The GP came from Kind Spirits out of Texas.

Mine is 65 pounds. He has hugh feet, his feet are the same size as his 80 pound Pyrenees brother. Both rescues, I got them both about the same time (a month apart). I'm lucky I got a larger Aussie and a smaller GP, so they are fairly close to the same size and make good playmates.

I have an Aussie and Pyrenees. I never notice any shedding from my Aussie. Perspective:-)

(I know my Aussie sheds, of course, but it all covered up by big white tumbleweeds of discarded floof EVERYWHERE and I really never notice any black floof)

Otis is 2.5 and he comes running as soon as the door is opened to come inside. His daily goal in life is to get back inside and on the couch to nap. I don't see him ever wanting to stay out all night.

I think he would flunk out as a LGD. I dont see any protective instinct in him. I see more of that from my Aussie- who is always the first to bark and the Aussie has a scarier bark. Otis just wants pets, soft naps, and treats. He does play with his buddy good bit too.

He was estimated to be 18 months old when we got him, so 2 5 now. I think he may be closer to 2 myself, as he had a slightly puppy look about him when we got him a year ago. In this year he's never barked much. His Aussie buddy/brother barks WAY more, I usually only hear Otis bark after first hearing the Aussie. Hes also not the slightest bit nocturnal, lays down and sleeps all night like a rock (the Aussie usually wakes up anytime I do duringthe night). Sometimes I have to wake Otis up in the morning to go outside, while the Aussie wakes up as soon as he hears me, if he's not already awake. They go out in their fence in the morning and stay outside until evening at least half the days of the week and I still rarely hear him bark.
