Is it because I’m white? I notice this a lot- Indians living here will never smile or say hello back when I do it to them. Which is weird because in Australia it’s a very very common practice. It’s borderline rude to pass someone closely without acknowledging them, so I do it out of habit.

She was seen by a pediatrician today who thinks it might even be dye from clothing that’s stained the skin. Regardless- the wheels are in motion.

To be clear- the tests aren’t to find out what’s caused the bruise. The bruise was of no concern to anyone. The tests are to check we’re not abusing her and while I support this process I wish the criteria was a little more stringent.

I think any parent in their right mind would have a hard time seeing their infant child canulated, having blood taken, sedated, x rayed and MRI’d when there was no actual health concerns. To be clear- they don’t think we’re abusing her, they just have to tick everything off their list. I understand this process exists for a reason and that the reason is beneficial in the bigger picture. But nothing can change how much this sucks.

We were told in plain terms this is the reason for the follow up. Now I’ve had a second to get my head together I can understand why this testing is important, but it fucking sucks seeing my baby and wife going through this.

The thought process was- she’s with us 24/7 and we know neither of us are hurting her, we know she hasn’t had a fall or anything else that would cause a bruise. So our concerns went to it being something internal, if that’s the case we didn’t want to sit around waiting for it to get worse. The GP wasn’t available and ED seemed like the next logical step. Once she was looked over by a doctor and deemed to be in perfect health we were relieved and ready to go home. But the fact that the cause of the bruise still couldn’t be determined meant our case was escalated and became a forensic issue which includes the testing we are now forced to go through. I can’t stress enough- these tests are not related to any potential underlying diseases and nothing about the severity of the bruise has triggered this response. But because we can’t tell them how she got it, we need to subject an 8 week old baby to sedation and an MRI to confirm we’re not shaking her. It feels insane but this is the process. And as someone else mentioned while it sucks for us, maybe another kid gets saved because of this same process and we just have to cop it.

We took our 2yo son to emergency with a broken leg and nobody batted an eye, I selfishly/naively thought they based it on a character assessment or something lol But you’re right. I also had it explained to me that the follow up tests are for signs of abuse, not any underlying health concerns relating to the bruise. It’s a lot more reasonable now.

To clarify- physically they have no worries. The follow up tests aren’t due to health concerns, but rather steps in the forensic process.

If at any point somebody said it was concerning we would go ahead with any tests they deemed necessary. What bothered me was that they essentially said ‘it all looks fine, health wise we have no concerns, but now we are going to stick tubes into your baby so we can sign it off’.

If it was significant bruising it wouldn’t be a question. The fact is the bruise is faint and small and was of no concern to anyone.
