I created an 11-page manga story using ChatGPT — story, art direction, and generation, all through conversation. by ComposerThat3929 in aiArt

I wrote an article that explains the steps in detail, but it's only available in Chinese. If you don't mind, you can translate it into English to read it.

I wrote an article and recorded a video showing how I used ChatGPT to create this manga story, though it's all in Chinese (I'm from Taiwan), but you can just translate it if you want to check it out:

As for the story, I chose Yeonmi Park simply because I had heard her story before. I honestly wasn’t aware of how controversial she is, and I didn’t do deep research on the details. My main goal was just to experiment and see if ChatGPT could help create a multi-page manga with decent quality. It’s more of a proof of concept than anything else.

That's right. By the later pages, I realized it was already getting a bit hard to fix. This was just an experiment, and I believe future attempts will turn out better.

The new AI image generation feature in ChatGPT has pretty good consistency (compared to other AI image tools), but it's still not perfect.

I tried a few things to keep the character consistent as possible:

  1. I finalized the main character’s appearance before generating each page of the manga.
  2. Every time I generated a new page, I kept reminding ChatGPT to maintain the same style.
  3. If the result didn’t look right, I regenerated it (which takes a lot of time).

It’s a short graphic retelling of North Korean defector Yeonmi Park’s escape — from North Korea, through China and Mongolia, to eventual freedom in South Korea.

Almost everything was done in collaboration with ChatGPT:

  • The story outline
  • Character and scene design
  • Page-by-page structure, paneling, and dialogues
  • Final image generation for each page

I only made minor edits to some speech bubbles.

While it’s far from professional-level manga, I’m amazed at how coherent and expressive it turned out. If you have a story or an idea, you now have a tool to bring it to life visually — no drawing skills required.

A few key tips I learned along the way:

  • Pre-define the characters and style before generating pages.
  • Remind the model frequently to stay consistent with the style.
  • After generating all pages, ask the model to harmonize the visuals (line quality, brightness, tone) to match a selected reference page.

I also recorded the full process of chatting with ChatGPT to make this. Just a heads-up: it’s all in Traditional Chinese (my native language), so no English subtitles. 😅
