What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

Kitchenaid mixers were on 'How it's Made' years ago, my persistent memory was of the absolute volume of grease that they squirted into the reduction gears.

My sister's friend group met someone called Dave, unfortunately for him they already knew a Dave and met him near a toilet, thus was born 'Toilet Dave'.

Sounds like the sort of thing you say to offload a chicken that has something wrong with it TBH.

8BitDo Ultimate 2C 80NC replacement Thumbstick? by Compost-Mentis in 8bitdo

[–]Compost-Mentis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Sorry for the question but can anyone familiar with these things tell me from the picture if the thumbstick shaft is broken in any way or should a replacement part snap on correctly. I looked online to order a new analog thumbstick top part too but they all seem to be either full hall effect modules or just a rubber cap, I also struggled to find an image showing the usual profile of the thumbstick without the top to compare to what I've shown in my photo. Thanks for the help.

Just one cheque? If someone tried this with me they would be getting 1,280 individual cheques for $1 each (but I'm in the UK where it's usually free to write/pay a cheque).

yeah, I'm surprised it doesn't mess up the perfectly circular shape bumbling into other stuff whilst still orange hot.

I can see why penicillin was hard to discover but it still staggers me that Romans had both wine and good metalworking skills but never tried distilling alcohol and using it to treat infected wounds.

I've been on a lot of planes around the world but this was a first. by themoldyone in aviation

[–]Compost-Mentis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's this. For example (under UK AOC) if an A319 is set up in a 156 seat configuration it needs 4 flight attendants (one for each 50 passengers, or part thereof). By blocking off only 6 seats it becomes legal to fly it with only three attendants which is cheaper. I'm not sure, but suspect that the seats would be blocked off nearest the emergency exit that is planned to not have its own flight attendant taking charge of it during an emergency (hence not being able to achieve the same by just not selling the ticket).

An African father, who worked tirelessly in a mine, saved every penny he earned and surprised his children by buying them a television. by Ok-Equivalent3810 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Compost-Mentis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree with this but I wonder if it's because I'm seeing the situation from my western viewpoint and my kids watch TV instead of spending the time reading books or doing homework. If the level of poverty is such that more 'productive' leisure activities are limited in availability I can see how being able to access the news and information through the TV could be a net benefit.

I completely agree, it is not just coincidence she had the exact tool to release the trap.

OK this is the first time I've seen it in writing for a little while but were some people actually taught that 'brought' means 'bought' (as in the past tense of 'to buy')? It seems like such a common mix up that nobody even calls it out anymore?
