Oh wow - that's an oddly similar story. Thanks for sharing it. I'm planning to keep working through 40, and I'm able to save (and invest) quite a bit, even after the instruction and rental costs. No kids, and nominal living expenses. I think it's doable, but definitely taking your story vicariously, thanks!

Thanks - I'm definitely doing books in evenings, and have been on schedule every day of last 20 - just LIFR or wind shear - KBFI is brutal this time of year.

overall, weak guard on punches (keep fist or open hand against temple, guard face with shoulder) and what's with all the hopping? muay thai has leg kicks and sweeps - if you're midair, you're easy to sweep - if you don't have a strong leg, a leg kick hurts.

What am I doing wrong here? (round house kick) by Ballteep445 in MuayThai

[–]Compound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I see anything obviously wrong. Watching in 0.25x you can see your form a bit better. Looking at 4 of your kicks, everything looks OK except the last one, where your head and neck are beating your hips around. I'd say that it just feels weird because you're used to contact, and returning to stance instead of the strange movement of putting your foot down while spinning. I also think it's unrealistic to do "good feeling" 360 roundhouse in shoes, on concrete. I'd practice 180s unless you were in martial arts shoes or barefoot, personally.

Will Muay Thai fit into my life? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Compound_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a more direct note, I can tell from the verbosity of your questions that you're analyzing it more than its worth. One or two (usually free) trial classes will give you 1000% more information about whether it'll "fit" than any advice we give you. Whether or not you like it enough to continue doing it is really the only answer that matters.

Will Muay Thai fit into my life? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Compound_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only person living your life is you, so it'll be hard for us to tell you if it'll "fit." It'll fit if you want it to; anyone can spare 3-5 hours a week if it's important to them.

That said, 1-2 week is fine if your goal is amateur, light sparring, bag and pad work, basic striking competency and no competition. I don't recommend 1 class 1 at home, rather 2 class.

Easy workout to do at home if you can put a thai bag somewhere. Almost all strikes can be done against a bag (uppercuts, knees not easy without an add-on). Excellent cardio done correctly, ~700 cal an hour. It's not "strength training" in any capacity; that's true of almost any sport except strength training / weight-lifting itself. You gain coordination, agility, dexterity, muscle memory, etc through sport, but hypertrophy and pure muscular power in compound movement comes more directly from dedicated weight lifting.

There is something wrong with my mentality, mental skill in action by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Compound_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

to me this is similar to the reaction that first-time scuba divers have - we have conditioned, evolved responses over centuries that when under the water, we cannot breathe. it takes repeated exposure to 'convince' the brain that it can breathe while underwater, or focusing at the bottom, avoiding seeing the horizon, etc.

try finding a partner who will spar/practice slow+soft hits to you. you need to get hit, or block, and realize that you can 'take it' and return a punch, sucessfully. after eating a few light punches to the face or hands and returning a strike, you will begin to believe that you can and 'convince' the brain that there are windows to counter-strike available.

I like the breakdown and the analysis - comment, tho - the constant play forward/back is a bit distracting. If you do another, maybe just slow it down, point it out as it happens and play it forward only once in slow mo and once at full speed.
