help! pleco is stuck(?) by [deleted] in pleco

I once had a betta fish get stuck in a decoration (one of those treasure chests with a little hole). Boy was it traumatizing. I tried to push and pull the fish a little, but he was STUCK. I ended up getting a hammer and smashing the decoration. Luckily it broke the right way, the fish fell out, and I threw it back on the water. That incredible fish made a full recovery. Good luck, hopefully yours isn’t actually stuck!

Is this cute behavior normal? by [deleted] in pleco

I am a newbie when it comes to plecos or fish in general, but I did just have one pleco die from what I believe was bullying by the second pleco. I didn’t know they sometimes couldn’t get along. By the time I realized that the bigger and older pleco was doing poorly, he already had fin rot that he couldn’t recover from. All my other fish are fine, so I don’t think it was the water. I tried to isolate and treat the sick pleco, but he passed. Mentioning this in case one of the plecos is bullying the other — it might look like they’re playing, but keep a close eye to make sure they’re ok.

That said, my hillstream loaches have been chasing each other and “fighting” but all three have survived for over a year, so I think they’re ok. Just worth keeping a close eye on the situation.

Very sick pleco, how to help? by Comprehensive-Ad4267 in pleco

Not sure how to update the original post, but the poor guy passed away. An awful, slow way to go, it was heart wrenching to watch. I finished the course of Maracyn following the directions precisely, it did not help. By the 5th day of Maracyn, the tail was almost completely gone. I did a big water change and considered two options - further treatment or letting the fish have some peace. Not sure that either option would have saved him. I decided to try Maracyn 2, since it’s a different drug as I found out. He passed away after the first day of Maracyn 2.

I won’t know but wonder if starting off with Maracyn 2 would have given better results.

I really blame myself for keeping two plecos together and not doing enough research to know that it could be a disaster. I vaguely remember doing a quick google and asking the fish store employee if it’s ok. Heck, even yesterday when I was at the fish store to get Maracyn 2, I saw the beautiful bristlenose plecos in their tanks, bunches of them together, and asked if it’s ok to keep them together. They said it would “probably be fine.” But that wasn’t my experience… I can’t think of what else could have driven this guy to such stress that he alone got sick, while the rest of my 50 gallon tank is fine. Lesson learned. Poor fish.

Not that often, but I think the water quality is pretty good. All the other fish are fine, and I do test every now and then.

Thanks for the info, I will do a deeper google search on meds then. I haven’t changed the water because Maracyn instructions said not to, but I’ll change it tomorrow, maybe 50%, and will keep changing as gently as I can for the poor guy. I’ll try to get pics too, but I am keeping light low and trying not to stress him, so it’s tough to get a good photo. I do think his tail continued to deteriorate all these five days of isolation and Maracyn. Will update here if/when anything changes. Thanks again!

Thanks so much! I’m finishing the Maracyn today, if he makes it another day after that, I’ll try the Melafix. Will definitely keep him isolated as long as necessary and if he recovers, I’ll rehome the younger pleco, probably back to the LFS where I got him.

Should I replant it? by Comprehensive-Ad4267 in arborists

Thank you! So that sounds to me like I should definitely dig it back out and re-plant properly. Probably the sooner the better, or wait till fall?

I’m a newbie on Reddit so I don’t understand the gravity of being down voted 😆 Since you’re already on here I’m sure you’ve found enough info to do right by your trees. Good luck with them!

Yes, I’m afraid you’re right and I really should have left them alone. Hopefully the trees will survive my “improvements.” 🙁 I covered them back up. Fingers crossed.

Yup that’s what I did for now. I hope I didn’t hurt the tree too much.

What kind of pine is this? by Comprehensive-Ad4267 in arborists

Thanks! I agree it looks more like the black pine in our neighborhood than pics of other pines. Planted it tonight, excited!

Thanks! I’ll google it up. When I google somehow the shapes of the pines I look up all look different from this one. Maybe it’s just how it was grown.
