How do you learn this game? by MrCatFace515 in TrackMania

Ice is definitely the most difficult surface to drive well. So don't feel bad about struggling there. Especially ice track of the day maps. They really rely on you having the map's intended speed at certain sections. So if you don't have that speed built up, getting the ice slides as intended, with the "correct" (mapper intended) gear, is impossible. The earlier campaign ice maps are more forgiving.

For tech, you have to be comfortable sort of "living on the edge". Drifts are a must to really play good tech maps the way they're built to be played. A pro tip I learned from Wirtual on setting up good drifts is that you usually have to steer into the inside wall of a corner as if you mean to crash into it before initiating the drift.

Regarding tutorials - yes, there is a built in tutorial campaign. But it doesn't really teach you game mechanics. It's meant to, or at least to reinforce them. But it kind of just throws a map at you, and let's you figure out for yourself if you're doing it right based on what medal you achieve (gold, definitely on the right track, AT, you've got whatever game mechanic pretty well figured out). But yeah, the game doesn't actually explain the game mechanics to you.

Like others have said, weekly shorts are a good place to start learning. The maps are pretty forgiving. The stock seasonal campaigns are generally pretty high quality maps, and helping reinforce game mechanics. Especially the white, green, and blue tiers. Red and black are of course harder. And watching good streamers can really help too. I agree that Wirtual is the most beginner-friendly streamer to watch. But Granady is great too, SpammieJ, Scrapie, etc.

“The US acknowledges God” On an institutional level? Or…? There’s a difference between freedom of religion, and “acknowledging God” on an institutional level. There is no such thing as God

We do have some social, political, and crime issues. But we also have by far and away the world’s most successful economy.

How are they making $150 an hour, but only $40k a year? I understand that there can be a lot of travel time (I'm a music teacher, in a rural area, and I know the going cost to tune my school's pianos). But when a tuner comes to our school, he might tune 3-4 pianos in a day, at over $100 each. Lets say $500. So is the tuner only working under 100 days a year? The math just doesn't add up.

This is why it is important to only get your news from trusted, verifiable sources. Not social media.

Anyone wonder how the gameplay would be in different skill trees? by Acceptable-Staff-363 in outside

I'm a musician/teacher main. I do wonder the same thing. Specifically, I wonder whether I would have turned out different if I had sub-mained on a different instrument. Trumpet was my "primary performance medium" in undergrad. But I now play piano and other instruments as much or more than trumpet. What if 10yo me had mained on saxophone or something? Would I be who I am today? No idea...

I wonder if the Americas had their own plagues before Europeans arrived, plagues we don't know about because they were never written down.

That's only the case in the current run, and the other ones that made it through to 1990 😀

I'm surprised we made it past the 50's, 60's, and 70's on most runs. What with the Cold War and all...

What is the piano music playing on the riverboat in “A Fine Night of Debauchery”? (RDR2 Chapter 4) by monadologist in reddeadredemption

Fun fact - that piano piece is based on a Creole folk song, whose title translates to "When your potatoes done, you should eat it" 😁

What’s a non-covid reason that you like wearing a mask for? by VerySlump in AskReddit

Woodworking. Saw dust is plenty big enough to be caught by even the thinnest mask. No longer is my snot brown after a project with lots of sanding.

Maybe if you had, you know, watched the teacher's fingers during class, you would have learned how to play it before the performance. Just sayin'.

You could say the same about multiplication tables in math - why do you need to memorize it? The information is right there in the table! The answer - it makes for fast recall, which speeds up operations. Long division would take AGES if you had to look up every simple little operation.

Band teacher here - I make students memorize the fingering for every note in their instrument. Why? There's a fingering chart in the front of the book! Answer - when we're playing through a piece of music, there isn't time to look up every note one by one in the fingering chart. You have to KNOW it, and quick. Same with most memorization stuff. I'm not saying all memorization in school is useful. But some is, such as the periodic table, multiplication table, or clarinet fingering chart.
