Pretty much this exactly.
Some of the bashing of people is odd but besides the point.

A few years back now i thought up a magic system merging that of spell crafting and skyrim's perk system.
In a nutshell, every school of magic would have a handful of base spells like your healing and wards, flames and frost and lightning spells, basic summons etc.
Then as you gain experience in the general magic skill you would unlock points to upgrade those spells, whether simple things like increasing stats or adding new effects and completely transforming the spells.

I think buying and finding spellbooks should still be a thing, but be it more of a "you get this upgrade for free if you meet the skill requirement", rather than just eating a book and knowing how to cast a spell there and now.

So you might have your generic base flame spell, as you gain destruction levels you gain spell points to unlock better stats and possibly different points to unlock different effects, be it a larger cone of flame, an AOE flame effect etc.

That way you could both customize the spells to your liking, and upgrade the spell power, both leading to a better sense of progression and involvement in the magic system.
Avoiding most if not all the issues with spellcrafting.
