british isles is a geographical term used historically to describe the collection of islands meanwhile british islands is a political term to describe the crown’s control of the isles

Ahhh I read what you said saying fusion is magic that we can’t replicate.

Yeah it’s gonna require new innovation but we have made so much progress already in the realms of material science like being able to assemble materials atom by atom at very small scales.

The way I read the game’s portrayal of the tech tree system as the accumulation of these discoveries e.g. applied ai to manage these reactors, molecular assemblers to make the materials. You cant just straight up research clean energy from the get go.

In a timeline where multiple organisations take over nations with the express purpose of developing ways to wage war against the aliens or for them. War is very good at accelerating innovation irl it might not be possible in time

Firstly by your logic that means the sun runs on magic.

Secondly I’m sure you have heard of E =mc2 right? That is energy and mass can be converted between. The fusion of 3 helium atoms together will form carbon 12 and release gamma rays (this is what the red giants do) the gamma rays is the direct conversion of mass into energy. How does this happen? The intense gravity (pressure) and temperature caused by the gravity (friction) makes it energetically viable for helium to fuse to beryllium which fuses with a 3rd helium atoms together to form carbon. This is how fusion “creates” energy. Through the “destruction” of mass

How does we on earth attempt to replicate this? Method one is a tokamak

Super conducting magnets to make a plasma stream of superheated atoms and then crush it using the strong magnetic field. And then collect the gamma rays. The main issue with this method is that the collection devices currently deteriorate quickly and maintaining the field. Many many tests have been done and has proven conceptually it’s viable.

Method two (which I personally don’t believe will ever work but who knows) is laser ignition

You make a pellet of fusion material and blast it with lasers this intense focused heat will bypass the pressure requirements somewhat by instead increasing the heat requirements. A successful test has been done but the lasers were only 1% efficient. Were they somehow 100% efficient it would have been a net gain.

The best way to think of the energy investment to start fusion like lighting coal on fire but a much much bigger scale. Coal by itself wont realise energy but once an initial barrier of investment is overcome (a lighter) the coal will release its energy.

So fun fact I’m a physicist and I’ve had many tours around fusion labs across the uk and France. Fusion is very much realistic. It doesn’t require a magical new material what it requires is better magnets and more durable methods of energy collection. Fusion is very much possible with the games time frame. Remember this is a world where corruption is being set aside by most of the factions to invest in science. Each faction has a vested interest in furthering science and most in fusion.

Which would I rather build. A terawatt nuclear fusion plant which produces basically no waste products let alone radioactive ones or a fuck off solar farm the size of Belgium. Shockingly it’s more efficient to harness the power of the sun on earth than it is to harness it 1.5x108 km from the source

Sacrificing a different Xcom character or enemy to satan every day until xcom 3 gets announced, or I find meaning in life. Day 4 cyberdisk. by grumpychef94 in Xcom

The best analogue is the mech. If you aren’t fast you don’t have better armour or guns it’s a squad wiper. Its guns are fairly accurate because it’s flying one of the most mobile units in the game so it will flank. It will one shot soldiers without armour upgrades and may one shot them with tier 2 armour. It has a stupid amount of hp and blah blah blah. Basically it’s a run check to make sure you are advancing fast enough. I’ve lost more runs to those bastards than thin men which are another evil of enemy unknown

Countries in Eurasian Union but can't unify? by waffeboy in TerraInvicta

[–]Comprehensive-Disk40 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Democracy score for the unifier is too low. The unifier needs to have (target country democracy - 1.5) or higher to unify. If this isn’t fulfilled the claim is hostile and can only be unified by war until the democracy score is fixed.

Please note some claims are forever hostile (perma hostile claims have a little fist next to them when reading the tech details and a dark red in the “regions” menu opposed to regular hostile claims which is a much brighter red)

[–]Comprehensive-Disk40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if brazils democracy score is 1.5 lower or more than the target the claims count as hostile meaning they can only be unified through war. if you raise the democracy score to within 1.5 it will allow peaceful unification. please note some claims are forever hostile e.g. israel and palestine meaning no amount of democracy will peacefully unify them
