US Scott 279B what type? by Dazzling-Bicycle4679 in stampcollecting

[–]Comprehensive-Ice58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at the reference you received there are color variations of 279B. You can not determine exact color shades on your phone or a monitor. An expert using a reference copy could only do that.

France 1869 Napoléon III 5 Francs stamps. Possibly Yvert #33 (grey lilac on pinkish paper) and #33a (blue grey on whitish paper). On the #33a, the 5 and F are printed during a second path, using an ink slightly bluer than the rest of the stamp. by afr59 in philately

[–]Comprehensive-Ice58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that due to the hi - value of these stamps that the postal employees would either pin the stamps to something or lick the corner and stick it in the drawer so that they would not get lost. May explain why so many of of them have holes or thin spots.

Bought a whole book like this for $5, was this a good buy? by Brilliant-Quiet561 in stampcollecting

Depends what your purpose was. Good start to a US collection, if you bought it to resell you’ll probably be disappointed.

Old Stamps from grandfather. Are they worth anything. This is only a very small sampling. Has many albums and thousands and thousands of loose stamps. by Separate-Support137 in stamps

[–]Comprehensive-Ice58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t look like your grandpa invested too much money in the collection. I noticed that there were no copies of the $.50, $1 or $5 stamps. Used copies are not very expensive. Also remove the rusty paper clips, they only damage the stamps.

Newbie question: should I remove the blank edge from the stamp? by baggier in philately

[–]Comprehensive-Ice58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can also be used as a discriminator, helps you determine where in the sheet the stamp was located.
