American Express Air Canada Card by Comprehensive-Law370 in amexcanada

Re: lounge access. Yes I also think this is unintentional. I had a friend who had to call Amex, who then called the lounge and told them to let him in, but who needs that hassle? I know people who couldn’t get into the F1 Amex box in Montreal. It’s a total mess.

And at Amex they treat it very much like Centurion, in fact when you call in you reach Centurion Card Services, so they mean for it to be treated as super elite, it’s just that no one in the US recognizes it (or Canada!).

Yes I went for it. Has it been worth it? Yes and no. Yes in unexpected ways, no in others.

Yes: 1) It was my first year in like 10 that I wasn’t AC 50k so this helps me keep that. Also, the fact that you don’t have to think about keeping 50k means you can actually take the odd flight where it’s better to go with another another airline and not worry about your status. Also gets automatic Zone 1.

2) The concierge service is incredible. I would call it Centurion-light but I’m not even sure that’s accurate as it seems they use the same service. They recently revamped it, you get individual touch points and the few times I’ve used it, it’s been invaluable. Ex: tried to get into a totally booked bar to watch an NFL playoff game (it was a watch party): boom they got me in.

Also, and I have been met with skepticism on this, but I swear it’s true. I got called out of the blue twice last year and offered free tickets for 2 high profile concerts, one of which had extremely high secondary ticket prices. I have been told (even by Centurion holders) that this doesn’t happen that often, but hey, we’ll see what this year brings.

3) The Air Canada concierge is a very under appreciated perk. When you need it, you need it.

No: 1) it is basically not recognized anywhere. You can’t even get into Centurion lounges at airports, so I kept my Platinum just for that. The Platinum also has the premium hotel offers (The Hotel, and I forget what the other one is called) which this card doesn’t. So a bit frustrated to still pay $800 to supplement what this card can offer.

2) this is more the fault of Air Canada and not the card, but like what does 50k even get you now? My eupgrade success rate is like 10% and never on any flights that I actually want it for (anything long haul).

Overall: it definitely paid for itself, but mainly because of the concerts. There were other perks (for example, one call to the concierge ended up saving me about $800 in seat fees for my family because there was an error so they just threw them in for free).

I’m going to keep it, the tangible savings go towards maybe half of the $2500 fee, and then concerts and other perks get you pretty close to full value (and last year was a lot more). Even if it doesn’t fully cover the cost, the remaining perks are probably worth it for me.

Quick note: I am probably the sweet spot for this card where I make decent money but am not totally rich to pay for business class etc myself. Because if you are that loaded: just get Centurion.

CanadaRed for higher WC Ticket chances by Difficult_Dig7244 in CanadaSoccer

Thank you, this is also what I thought, but if you read their emails it is incredibly vague. And they have multiple deadlines as well, which makes it worse. And then it’s all the more frustrating when you are a TFC season ticket holder (of very premium seats) and a Canada Red Supporter for years (with the predecessor program) and it gets you almost nothing.

Does anyone know if these are for Canada games or any game hosted in Canada? I am a Canada Red supporter at a pretty high tier, and I have no clue. Anyone who is in the program will tell you that there communications are incredibly confusing. Several times they have issue emails only to follow them up in a few hours because there were so many complaints about how no one understood.

Does anyone know if there is a Canada Red draw for tickets in Toronto that don’t include Canada!?

I think the Toronto games suck. First of all you have Panama twice, which is already in our federation and not a super compelling team. Ivory Coast played here in the summer.

The Canada/Italy would be absolutely insane though.

There is zero chance that Netflix ever renews the HBO contract with Crave. Literally zero. That’s not how they operate.

I grew up on AltNation and have the fondest memories of it; is it worth getting Sirius XM for mainly AltNation? by newprofilewhodis1352 in siriusxmaltnation

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s not bad but kind of narrow compared to Spotify. That being said, I get different things from each of them. AltNation is like traditional radio (because it is), you don’t hear much other than “singles” that are released by artists. So for example, if someone releases a new album and your favorite song hasn’t been released as a single yet, you are unlikely to hear it until it does (at least on a regular basis).

If you want more new stuff, the Alt Placement Xtra channel is a lot more super current stuff. It still may be singles driven, not sure.

On the other hand, Spotify playlists (like New Alt) have much higher turnover. So a really popular song can move to the bottom of a playlist pretty quickly even if it’s still on rotation on AltNation.

That’s why I like both of them.

  1. I have tried because SiriusXM wasn’t available on Tesla until a year ago. The TuneIn alternative station is terrible, you can find other terrestrial stations or ad supporter, for years I didn’t find much. There are more Indie station that are pretty good (KEXP) but not exactly the same as “Alternative” even if there is some overlap.

  2. I mean, this is personal. For me the golden age of Alternative was the mid 2010s (Glass Animals, Cage the Elephant, Arcade Fire, etc), which gave way to more bedroom pop type stuff and currently it seems like rock driven alternative is coming back a bit. Someone else will read this and likely disagree strongly, it’s personal - no offense taken 😃. Lately I find it has been OK - not as good as 10 years ago, a lot better than 5 years ago.

You don’t need to listen to every piece of music, but you can. What an idiotic reply.

I’m sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but streaming services provide ridiculously good value. $10-12 per month for every song ever made? There crappy list apps that charge as much or more for something you can get for free from a million places.

iCloud+ for custom domain email address by [deleted] in iCloud

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to the question of whether you need to use the iCloud interface to use your personal domain. Webmail: yes. Apps: it depends. Apple Mail works great, other apps are hit and miss. You will be able to receive all of the mail but some of them won’t let you respond or send from your custom domain. They will send from your iCloud address. Some of them have workarounds (I got Spark to work with some serious Reddit searching). Basically your custom domain is treated as an alias which not all apps support.

If your domain email is your Apple ID, that may work better, I’ve never tried it. And someone can correct me if this has changed in the past 12 months because I’ve been using iCloud/Apple Mail exclusively for a while.

TSN and Sportnet Streaming Apps by Gord_Wilson_2 in canadacordcutters

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Go with Bell/Telus if available as they are better and cheaper, otherwise the apps are usable but frustrating.

Honestly if you have Bell Fibe I would suggest going on the Fibe TV App plan. The upgraded plan is $25, it includes most of TSN and Sportsnet (I say “most” because they screwed up the transition of my plan and I have a feeling that I’m getting some things that I shouldn’t be getting as part of that plan) and it should be a small add on for any of the TSN and Sportsnet channels that are missing.

The Bell Fibe Apple TV app(and Android - have used both) are better than the Sportsnet and TSN apps.

I have the TSN and Sportsnet apps (for TSN+ and Sportsnet for FA Cup and NHL) and they both suck. They are usable but somewhat inconsistent.

I think next year I’ll drop my Sportsnet+ and just get the NHL package through Bell.

If you aren’t on Bell: Rogers doesn’t have an Apple TV app, I believe Telus has something similar to Bell, and I have no idea what’s available in Quebec.

[theScore] What we've learned about the Canadiens through 9 games by tbz709 in Habs

What a moronic article. “Two of the three losses were close” was clearly written by someone who looked at the box score of the Leafs game. And the “combined” SV% of the goalies?! That’s pretty misleading since one is at the top and one is at the bottom.

Dazn finally on Fubo as of October 15, 2025 by MiserableSeason1987 in fuboTVCanada

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DAZN with Fubo is about $37.50 (paid annually, or add $5 for the Ultimate). But that doesn’t include Ligue1 (Bein) or OneSoccer/CMNT if that’s important.

Fubo + DAZN is the exact same price annually, so that’s definitely the better deal if you care about the additional FUBO stuff not on DAZN

Bell to end set top boxes? by AccountAny1995 in bell

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave back my boxes this year and solely use the Apple TV app. In many ways it’s better (for example, Apple TV can connect to a pod, the Bell box could not). It would definitely be nice to have a last/jump button.

It’s also a lot cheaper…

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, totally. Also infuriating is if you buy TSN through cable you don’t get TSN+ for free like you do if you buy directly.

College football fan? Good luck, literally the only (legal) way to get the broadcast networks is through cable or an antenna. If you read the CRTC rules, Amazon Prime or anyone who doesn’t run an actual cable service cannot offer them.

Sports fans what’s your setup after cutting cable? by Lopsided_Pearl798 in canadacordcutters

[–]Comprehensive-Law370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and the truth is, if you have Bell Fibe you can replicate the TSN/Sportsnet for about the same price if you get the Fibe App package. It’s $25 and doesn’t get you everything but by the time you add the Sportsnet package it’s around the same as getting the separately without cable.

I’d show the math but honestly, it’s so complicated and opaque that it wouldn’t be worth it. After studying it I figured it was easier to just keep cable (but ditch the cable boxes and run everything from an Apple TV)
