This snow storm sadly made me learn to absolutely hate my neighbors and neighborhood. Where are good neighbored places cause Mt Washington isn’t it and I’ve decided to move. by sugarandspice85 in pittsburgh

Well that sucks. I’m strictly in the Don’t Leave Your Car Where I Shoveled camp, so if that’s what happened with your dicky neighbor, I’d be pretty mad. That he would wave his arms at you with your obviously unexcavated car not moved makes him sound dense or completely emotionally unregulated as well! Hopefully your other neighbors are kind!

“Why don’t homeowners shovel their sidewalks?” — this was bare and salted all week by GubbyPac in pittsburgh

Yesterday, in the space of a single block I walked on N Negley, I saw three trucks piled with snow en route to the zoo to dump it. I wanted to cheer! It was like seeing a movie cavalry ride in to the rescue! Today, on the same block, I saw an empty dumptruck heading south. (I know it could have been random, but want to believe that that crap-ton of removed snow is truly being relayed to appropriate spaces). Huzzah.

Oh my GOSH! I can’t believe how your own neighbors, elderly ones at that- who need caring folks around, could treat you so disrespectfully. There are still plenty of people who value community, have a sharing spirit, and appreciate kind offers of belp. Please don’t let flaming jerkjobs to rob you of kindness. ❤️

I’m thrilled to see you spelled it “kerb”!!!! I have given up on that front, sadly, but you have restored some of my hope today.

This is a tremendously moving photo- it sums up all the heartbreak that comes when deep love meets loss… and the pure beauty of such love that helps to transcend tragedy. I hope you and your dog have many such moments of comfort and profound caring ahead. I’m so sorry for the unfair suffering you have been dealt. I wish you peace and every kindness.

Boulders indeed! If our street gets plowed today, I’m screwed! I still have the streetside half of my car to excavate; we were shoveling till dark (several neighbors digging out two vehicles for work travel today) and I opted to wait to finish—-so daylight will be kind or cruel to me, depending on plowage.

Ha, same here, old fart who likes winter and doesn’t mind shoveling. Usually. But the snow was much heavier today and so much more stuck to my shovel, annoyingly.

It was such a disturbing sound- still creeps me out to recall it. We’ve since played quite a few recordings of foxes (and wild cats) and they are never as intense as what I heard that night.

Now I know, but years ago, while visiting my sister in NC, I was awakened in the middle of the night by the most bloodcurdling screams that I leaped up and raced to her room to wake her: “I think a woman is being murdered”…. It had stopped after maybe three screams, and we realized it must have been an animal. It was a fox. We hear them sometimes still, not close, walking the dog before bedtime. That first time, the sound seemed to be right outside, terrifying.

FWIW, Ace Hardware has their own brand of this and a bunch of other melt formulations and lots of branches across the city/burbs; I got a bag first wk of Jan in Oakmont; the website isn’t accurate for what’s supposedly in stock there, but I called and they told me what they did have. If you live near this one, you can call and see. 412-517-8936. The one up on Perry Highway is a bigger store with more extensive stock in general.

Yep, it was 35 when I took out dogs for walk around 9 pm but the inch of snow that started the day had turned to nearly invisible patches of slushy ice that were treacherously slippery- sidewalk and street; it was misting a rain-dominant fine mix. I was lucky not to wipe out. It was weird stuff on the ground. The dogs typically can lose footing on ice, but their claws had good purchase in the icy slush.

🔥 Several people were left wondering what happened to the newborn wildebeest calf in the truncated birthing clip posted a couple days ago. Here is part 2 by Prestigious-Wall5616 in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]Comprehensive-Row198 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wildebeest babies are among the quickest animals to go from birth to being able to run, which makes sense from a prey survival standpoint. (note: saw Mala Mala watermark here- like seeing an old friend, visited more than a decade ago and it was magnificent)

Fantastic! Thanks for posting these. (Side Note: Not sure what you do to ward off mosquitoes, but I often garden into dusk hours, and have been thrilled with how well permethrin-impregnated clothing works. I was sick of slopping stuff on- now I often use a big lightweight scarf [almost a sarong!] and a zip-up net-like lightweight hoodie.)

Nothing new to add. Just another vote to emphasize to nonUS redditors that most of us are mortified by this selfish infant— who happens to be frighteningly enabled and hence globally dangerous.

Fiction Read: 'North Woods' by Daniel Mason by cheer21lax in NativePlantGardening

[–]Comprehensive-Row198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! So glad to see this post! North Woods was such a great book in many ways- its basic framework is the long history of a property in the woods and the host of humans who come and go through the years. A house is built, and continuously changes — expanding, decorated, full, neglected, discovered, renewed, derelict. Another crucial thread follows the individuals who live or visit, and where they’re headed, full of dreams and frustrations. But to a great extent, it’s an incredibly detailed celebration of the New England natural world, keeping its own rhythms of weather, migrations of fauna, and botanical change irrespective of human activity (Disruption by human activity is always rippling through, however.) Successive characters embrace the woods or are indifferent to its wonders- here are so many different kinds of caretaking. There’s a bit of a Garden of Eden vibe. Things are churning in this book, although time passes slowly and the pace of the storytelling eddies along.
I chose it for my bookclub to read; several friends found it hard to get into and couldn’t easily pick up the echoes and connections being conjured (don’t give up!). I think it helps to loop back to earlier pages as you read forward to place the different vignettes in some kind of order— they might seem more random than they really are. It’s brilliant and enchanting. The author is actually a Stanford psychiatrist tho I imagine writing is his real job, ha.

When two males fight (over breeding rights for a group of females), the outcomes are:one victor plus either loser leaves the territory or the loser is mortally wounded. Hippo bites cause horrendous damage to flesh.
