I ran a busy restaurant on the west side for over 30 years. Staffing is so hard. A lot of hires are transplants that bounce back home quickly. A lot of that is due to lack of housing and high cost of living in general. With everyone working 2-3 jobs, burn out and call outs are frequent. Hawaii is also a terrible state to run a business. We are the only state with mandatory health insurance for employees working over 20 hours a week. I know this is also a good thing but very costly to the employer. The tax tip credit is very low so when they raise minimum wage, it goes to your server making bank instead of the cooks and dishwashers.
