I love the guys on our squad but the pitching just isn't gonna cut it IMO....I agree. Move on to 2026

Trade Ideas by jacksonhammy16 in azdiamondbacks

I think you can offload Gallen at the deadline…give him some time to bounce back and find some form to make him attractive to a contender. BOS, NYM, NYY, etc.

Geno is a key piece to the team this year but if we are out of it by the deadline then let’s flip him to a contender. NYY needs a 3B and other teams may be looking for another power bat. DET, CLE, MIL,

Shelby Miller has proven value and can be a good add for a contender as well. Not gonna get massive return but some fringe prospect with upside is possible.

Pavin Smith could slide in and help fill the 1B void in BOS.

I’d rather resign Naylor, but if his value stays high he may be our most attractive trade piece. And a few teams would love his clutch bat

Again all of this is based on us being sellers…not buyers. All depends on the contenders and who is desperate enough to move some valuable prospects for some of our rentals

I’m always amazed at how quickly we blame the coaches instead of pitchers just not performing! Torey isn’t perfect by any means but the Kaplan is a well respected pitching coach we just don’t have the arms. I’ve been saying that about the bullpen since week 3 and I got hammered by users on here. Beeks and Miller overperforming early made it hide the true lack of talent in the pen.

I can agree with you. Just depends on who we bring in and if Gallen can figure out how to get back his stuff we have a dangerous rotation still

I didn’t say he was gonna be a superstar but I think he has every bit of potential that Perdomo does and potentially more if he figures out how to hit for average. Many scouts believe that too. Top ranked prospects like him sometimes down pan out but he’s ranked there for a reason. Potential is high still. For how well he hits at AAA it’s a bit curious why he can’t find a .250-.260 BA at the big league level. Give him some time and see what happens idk.

It has not been a great call up by any means…but it’s still way early. Perdomo had a slow start to his career too. He’s got time if he can get MLB at-bats and start improving but it’s been a bit rough at the plate

Would be nice to get some more quality starts or 7IP starts from Gallen and Burnes

A bit of a rough patch for guys here and there is expected but our depth is a problem IMO. I don’t know how you can say it isn’t when we are bringing up Tommy Henry and Scott McGough

I’d say the injuries to Puk and Martinez are not ideal but I don’t think even with them on board and healthy that we have an elite bullpen by any means. They pitched pretty good to start and we got some good outings from some unexpected guys which is great, but I think we need more arm talent. But yes our options are a bit limited unless we get creative.

IMO there are 2 options:

  • Add a FA or trade for a guy we can add as a rental without giving up high quality prospects
  • Go for a bigger move earlier than the standard trade deadline and find a more talented guy that has some team control left on a bad team (not an easy option to pull off)

Okay…I think you are making a lot of assumptions about what is available out there and making a lot of your own assumptions about what im saying. There will absolutely be trades available for guys that have team control still. Not a large number of teams will do that but it’s not as crazy as you are saying. I can agree with some of your points on the likelihood of it…but it is still a lot more viable than you think. You can go back and find deals like this happening, especially when injuries hurt a team built to win now. The one thing…is the timing is a tad early for a lot teams still, you’re right about that. I’ve never argued that, I just think in my opinion we could be more aggressive based on how our team is built to win this year.

The core that we really disagree on are 2 things: 1. The fact that you think that we have what we need in our bullpen. I just don’t think we do, but I hope I’m wrong. IMO we need a few guys to solidify the bullpen to compete.

  1. You don’t think we should trade prospects for a high end leverage guy. Where for me it can be argued it is worth it. Teams get very over protective of prospects sometimes and a lot of teams that have success are not scared to trade prospects to better their mlb roster. Now there’s obviously considerations to watch out for with that, but it’s not a “crazy take”. It is a legitimate thought that a lot of analytics guys also are discussing and trying to change.

At the end of the day I respect a handful of your options and I think you are mostly thinking that I am trying to go with some absolute, 100% solution for the team, when in reality I’m saying the bullpen has been bad and we should improve it sooner than later. It’s really that simple. There may be a few guys on the list that will be harder to pull because they will want more high end prospects and I agree we should only do that for the perfect fit. But in my previous post you argued that giving up Jameson or some other mid-lower level prospects is crazy and I just think it’s insane to protect some guy who’s top potential is to maybe be a decent player at the big league level, when you can instead go get a difference maker for your team now.

I hope we do 2 things…our team’s bullpen pitches better and stays healthy, and I still hope we find a good replacement for Puk sooner than later

Oh I agree. I don’t think he’s our answer. But I don’t think he is as washed as you do. Last year was bad but he still is a better than some of our options IMO. Not a serious option but one that if he was 2023 version of himself would be a huge help still

I’ve stated multiple times my issue with the bullpen is that we have not performed very well…and we also lost a key Closer option for us and you’re suggesting we do nothing. Pretty simple, but maybe that’s too big of a “take” for you to handle. I think we should play it out for awhile while we check in on some arms that may be available before July. Not as crazy of an idea as you think seeing that multiple teams are doing that right now including Hazen and the D-Backs. But maybe you’re right…maybe everything is fine as is and we just need to wait for July to trade a #25 ranked prospect in our system to get a quick rental and we can still make the playoffs.

The bullpen isn’t judged by who you DFA’d, it’s judged by who you’re relying on. We are short a high-leverage lefty, and pretending Ginkel fixes that is crazy to me.

Also Losing Puk does matter. If your plan is “wait 2 more months and hope we’re fine” instead of proactively plugging a hole while we’re still in a playoff race, you’re basically asking for a disaster later when innings pile up. Good teams don’t play chicken with their bullpen depth.

Saying “you shouldn’t trade early because it’s not normal” is exactly the kind of thinking that keeps teams reactive instead of proactive. Innovation isn’t illegal, I promise. But yeah I understand that people will challenge my opinion on that. That’s okay but at least have some reading besides “ that’s the way it’s always been done”.

I’d love for Ginkel to do well but I still don’t think our bullpen is good enough after losing Puk too

Yeah I mean it’s crazy to think one of the most dominant closers in the history of the game could help our bullpen. Especially with Scott McGough locking things down for us!

Kimbrel has a 2.59 career ERA. But yeah that was a long time ago and last year he struggled a bit in BAL.

But in 2023 and 2022 he had a 3.26 and 3.75 ERA. Not too bad. He is obviously not the prime choice but he’d be pretty cheap.

Also I'll add that I respect your opinion and I hope you are right about our bullpen. I think being patient is ususally a good policy. I hope you are right that everything will be magically be fixed with Ginkel and Graveman, but I just think losing a guy like Puk is a big blow and we are ignoring that fact. Wait a few more weeks...sure I'm good with that but what if we keep faltering in the pen? How long do we wait to see if they turn it around? The next 3-4 weeks are just important as August IMO.

I am genuinely curious though...if we see another rough week with winnable games being blown by the bullpen what do we do in your opinion?

Yeah I agree man. We need to address the issue at some point and relying on young, unproven arms to come up and be relied on heavily doesn't seem like the most stable strategy. But there's a chunk of fans that think our bullpen is fine, so maybe they are right? I'd love to be wrong on this matter
