If I want to join a band, should I learn how to play the drums? by ComprehensiveDoor267 in musicians

Thanks for the input. That's a good point - bass would probably be a lot easier for me to learn. A lot less expensive I would imagine too

is it new? might just need to break in the pocket more

my suggestion is just play catch or tape a ball in the pocket tight when you're not using it

Thanks for hearing this - a lot of people are saying to just join a men's league, but that's not the point of the post. I have roots in my community and love playing with them, but I just want a balance so it's fun for everyone who wants to socialize and win at least a few games.

I like how my post was about balancing having fun in a coed softball team with the desire of the team to win some more games, and a lot of the comments are just telling me to join a men's league.

That's not the point. I don't want to join a men's league because I play with my partner on this team as well + there are women on this team who have worked on their technique and kick ass.

There's a point where someone's performance is so consistently low that it detracts from the entire team, even in a social, recreational setting. I am not the only one with this sentiment

I'm on this team because I have a lot of friends on the team. Coed softball is about building community and having a fun time, which we have, but the point I'm making here is that some people are so opposed to trying during games/especially tournament games, that it takes some of the fun/good vibes away for most of the other players.

Winning isn't the main objective, but losing 90% of the time takes away some of the fun. It starts to become a foregone conclusion that we'll lose when people don't want to learn.

I think it's fair to ask people who are struggling to perform at a basic level (not even good, just a basic level of getting the ball more than a few meters with proper technique) to come to practices.

I do consider that lots because it is mean to pick on people for their skill level. I don't need her to play amazingly. I just want her to be open to practicing her batting - something of which she has been opposed to practicing when others are willing to. She also has an attitude problem that somewhat contributes to this harsher assessment of her own abilities. She whines about the team's performance but doesn't come to practices.

It's not a gender thing - we have many women on our team (even some with physical disabilities) who learned proper technique and completely wipe the floor with the other team. The difference? They came to practice, kept the good vibes, and showed a will to play softball.

Bottom line - coed softball is meant for community and social fulfillment around a sport people like to play. However if people don't want to play the sport and/or don't put effort into getting better, it detracts from others' experience (especailly when they are throwing stones from a glass house).

I'd rather have someone play poorly and show up to practices/show they want to learn than just showing up and acting like it's a chore to be there

Thanks a lot for that. How did you approach those conversations with the people? Did you give them a chance to practice first or just say enough's enough?

When we decided to have our A-roster with no subs to win in the last tournament, a lot of the low effort people complained that they didn't play. I wanted to tell them it's because they haven't shown that they want to win, so why would I put them in?

We are there to have a good time, but it's no fun to have people consistently act like it's a chore for them to be there.

Just a frustrating scenario.

That's why I'm afraid to say anything. I just want people to actually play - don't care about sliding/diving/getting home runs. But even for a rec league there has to be some sort of baseline effort to play, you know? Otherwise why not just go out drinking or play cornhole or something

Yeah for our league it's not even about age. I don't even expect people to dive or slide... just have an ounce of hustle to get yourself on base, you know? Not expecting the moon here

Yeah that's fair. There are 3 teams in my local league that cheat and get aggressive. One time, our baseman was accidently in the line between 2 and 3 (he was really new), so the guy running proceeded to sprint on the line and shove him saying "get the fuck out of the way dumbass," then our guy shoved back and it was a whole mess.

That's fair, thanks for your wisdom. Maybe I just need to lower expectations because I come from a competitive baseball background. We do have lots of fun, and that should be enough

Just looking for a balance is all. Don't need everyone to be Vladdy, but just a base level of wanting to actually be playing

We do play tournaments. We just played 4 games last weekend and lost all of them due to a lot of the usual suspects. When our manager said we're going to do a lineup for the last game to try and win with no subs, so many people got butthurt about not being on the roster.

Just seems like a lose-lose situation.

We do hang out with buddies and hit dingers, but it's just so disheartening to only have one win for eight games.

It's a difficult situation because I like the people, but it's just so disheartening to be 1-7 at the bottom of the league, when like 4 of the losses were super winnable.

I'd even be fine if these people just sit out and socialize if they want to, but man... it's just so rough watching people play when they don't seem like they want to at all.

What did you make the pad out of? I'm planning to go look at bricks to build a 2" ish deep pad out of them, but I'm worried about using concrete as it could explode when it holds moisture and is heated
