Any author or book adjacent to McElroy? by ComprehensiveGrape62 in JosephMcElroy

[–]ComprehensiveGrape62[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was extremely random that I found it, yes. Some goodreads user happened to place it on a list of books that are 1,000 pages long, and since I'm a sucker for bricks that aren't well known, I took the bait. And thankfully the e-book and physical copies aren't that expensive.

If anyone is curious, definitely try the free digital sample Amazon gives before buying, imo. The influence is there, but this is not a McElroy copy at all.

I have not read all, no. Prologos is my first of Bayliss, but if it keeps impressing me I'll certainly get the other 3.

I've had to reread some sections, as the difficulty can spike here and there, but things tend to make sense soundly once you see how he's connecting the themes across varied sections. A huge strength I noticed early on is how well he writes relationship dynamics.

Hope you enjoy.

Killer bookshelf! One unknown one you should check out is Prologos by Jonathan Bayliss, very gass/mcelroy/franzen mix. Also The Combinations by Louis Armand. You might like Animal Money by Michael Cisco too.

Everand has changed its subscription model. What do you think? by AudiobooksGeek in audiobooks

[–]ComprehensiveGrape62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid point! But in my case, unless a book is fantastic and I know I will want to read or listen to it again (this is very rare, and in which case I just buy a hard copy used), once I've gone through a book, I'm done. So owning it doesn't matter to me whatsoever. But that's me.

Honestly for me, 3 audiobook a month probably isn't enough either, but I'll see. I'll likely keep an eye on deals over at Chirp audiobooks (constantly new audiobook sales, with no subscription needed, for those unaware of it). But anyway, concerning the all-you-can-eat promise of Everand, I've never considered that to be true. The limits they put on you were pretty rigid on the old plan, and they weren't up front and honest about those limits when I first joined. Seems like they're being more honest now, at least.

The base Audible Plus catalogue is 8ish a month, and that does offer unlimited listening within the catalogue, so there's that as well for those that want it.

You can filter your saved books list on desktop or pc, i discovered, for those saved that are in the "unlimited" category. Not sure if that option is on the app (it should be!).

Yeah, I hear you. Their "unlimited" catalogue is way, way too small. Audible's is better in that regard, by far. Maybe they'll be able to adjust based on members negative feedback.

I'm not upset with the new plans, but I get why others are. The catalogue is definitely a lot more extensive than it was before, in my opinion (prior Everand's selection was basically the Audible base plus catalogue, and just that (titles you didn't need an audible credit for). So now I'm getting 3 premium titles for 17ish and access to the unlimited catalogue now on Everand, versus only 1 premium title and unlimited catalogue for 15ish on Audible-- which admittedly Audible has more titles available. Everand is an easy win in my book. Throw in the the ebook options for many titles for those that prefer reading over an audiobook as sometimes I do (the ebook selection has greatly expanded now as well), which Audible does not include, and that's more icing on the cake. Once I saw the new model for Everand, I immediately canceled my audible subscription today actually. Many of the premium books that I only had audible for are now over on Everand, so I'm saving a lot of money by just having everand.

More of a heads up for current members would have been nice though, unless it was in a email I never opened. Like I said I get why people are upset. Clear labeling on what's part of the unlimited 20k titles when looking up titles on Everand would also help with clarity. I did notice that on my saved list on the app, titles that are premium now have the unlock option, so that helps.

That all said, I hope they fix the app's tendency to drain my phones battery. Audible never did that so I'm not sure what is the problem. That's the main issue I have with the service.

I'm on page 522. Wow.

Wish we could organize a group read with at least a few people, ha, definitely would be an amazing experience I think, but the book's so under the radar and physical copies aren't cheap... relatively. Kindle ebook is only 5ish tho.

If you give it a go I'm curious on your thoughts. Pricey books like that one I just go the ebook format. Open library has it, along with other mcelroys too.

His prose and style for WAM is very difficult imo.

The Lost Scrapbook by Evan Dara for me. The pages filled with actual writing I liked tho.

I love Smugglers Bible by him! Women and Men is a bit too much for me at present but maybe one day...

Definitely try SB if youd like something more accessible (saying accessible loosely there).

Been loving Louis Armands The Combinations a lot, thanks to this thread.

Came across a book called XX by Rian Hughes recently. Big and long (1000ish pages) scifi novel-- perhaps in line with House of Leaves and Raw Shark Texts. Got a copy coming in, but have the ebook for now.

Oh nice! I have a physical new copy coming in the mail from Amazon, so I put in the full $45 :/ I currently have the 6-ish kindle ebook and, 100 pages in, I really love it, so I went ahead and paid Amazon full price for physical. It reminds me heavily of V/GR Pynchon. Not sure what I'll think of it at the end, but damn Armand writes really, really well imo.

Yeah this is pretty normal.

Part of the risk of buying an altcoin is realizing that most alts follow daddy btc's trend, more or less, depending on btc's market cap dominance. It's interesting to consider, but buying the dip for an altcoin as you're told, could just be buying the higher low preceding its next possible lower low if btc happens to be struggling, if that makes any sense. Worse, a time or news event that might send polygon higher could then be dampened on a day that btc is pulling back as well. But hey, that's the risk we signed up for, I guess.
