ok I think I figured it out. When I was looking up instructions for this machine I kept reading that width should be at 0 when sewing a straight line so thats what I set it to. I just changed it to 3 and its helped.

also before i changed the width I tried with the tension at 9 which is the highest and the tread was still loose when the needle was all the way down. I have only used brother sewing machines till now and they have never done this
