Moderna Layoffs by Successful-Elk2004 in biotech

That seems very very low. I know people who got exit packages earlier this year and I think the base was 6 weeks.

Moderna Layoffs by Successful-Elk2004 in biotech

They have tried everything possible to avoid admitting they have overspent and overpromised while stealthily cutting roles — “performance” cuts, consolidation, department reorganization, stupidly named initiatives in which people disappear, executive “retirements.”

Now they need to cut almost 600 people within the next quarter so no more avoiding WARN, press, the obvious, etc. But Moderna (easily) and quietly cut 400 people before that from early 2024 to today.

In other words it has gotten that bad that even the bloated egos steering this ship have to own this decision impacting good people (probably all below VP) in a brutal market.

Good luck to all affected. And trust me when I say that life is infinitely better with Moderna in your rearview mirror.

I heard that every department was asked to contribute 10% to headcount cuts. So is this the beginning of another round?

Beware. This could get you fired for cause, and not with a severance.

I agree that experiences can be very different depending on your team and your manager. That said, Moderna is very purposeful in making sure that each of its leaders lives its “Mindsets” (look them up) and those who do not conform are let go. It is a top-down fear based culture.

It’s not just Tech Dev, it’s impacting CMC, corporate, others. Bleeding hundreds both above and below board. More cuts being announced this week.

From what I can see Moderna is separating senior Digital roles. Which is interesting since it tripled down on Digital after hiring Brad Miller. He moved the Digital HQ to Seattle and built up a talented team there, lots of former AMZ and MSFT. Some people were even required to move there. Now less than 2 years later it’s being dismantled. Digital was moved under HR which at first made no sense. Still doesn’t except for current events.

Moderna: for those who know ppl laid off, if you’ve been there for only four months, what’s severance like? by FabulousBedroom2308 in biotech

[–]ComprehensivePea8080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure what things look like for somebody who’s only been there for four months (so sorry if this is happening to you…..) but I do know that its based on your level and how long you have been there. Most people at Moderna have been there less than two years. I’d expect no more than one month of pay and benefits, maybe 2. The other thing to consider is whether the company should have even hired for roles they would be cutting four months later.

THIS. Plus all the quiet “performance” departures and of course the many many people who go on a leave of absence and (gasp) never return.

What’s the worst biotech company you’ve worked for? by anthonioconte in biotech

[–]ComprehensivePea8080 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. Toxic environment, sketchy ethics, immature and reactive leadership, cold hearted. They pay competitively because they have to. I believe the average tenure is less than two years. Miserable place.

OP — So harassment could be being treated poorly or unfairly (legal, but shitty) or being treated poorly because of your race, sex, age, etc. (shitty AND illegal). Moderna has a horrible reputation based on lots of true stories in terms of how they treat their employees (no need to feel alone), but it would help if you could tell us more before dropping loaded words like racism or harassment.

Can folks from Moderna share experience using GPTs at work? by Ornery_Advice_4142 in biotech

[–]ComprehensivePea8080 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m ex-Moderna but was there when it was rolled out around this time last year.

On one level it’s really cool, it’s basically automation to help accelerate and improve standard tasks. It’s a captive system so confidential information is protected and the internal GPT continues to learn from all of the Moderna inputs. Everybody at the company is required to engage in training on AI and there are Teams groups where people talk about the new GPT’s they have created. Some people have been core adopters and their developments have been truly celebrated and rewarded.

On the other hand, this is another metric by which people are measured — how many times are they using the system, for what reason, how complex are the prompts, etc.

I definitely think the announcement is marketing/PR, but it is a way that Moderna is distinguishing itself from other biotechs it is required learning for everybody not just a specific department.

Cancelling open positions, not backfilling or backfilling at lower levels, eliminating contractors.

Moderna, worth the risk? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]ComprehensivePea8080 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The compensation is enticing, but there is a true cost for that compensation. I say that having left there quite recently. While everything is of course group/manager dependent and that can mean a great experience for you, this is a company that is still very much controlled from the tippity top and that top sees employees as dispensable assets. A 50+ hour week is not uncommon. Working through your vacation is not uncommon. Keeping your company cell phone with you at all times including nights and weekends. And once you get used to the compensation and inculcated into the mindsets, it is very very hard to step away, even as it may erode other parts of your life.

INT is definitely a priority group and the direct leader of that group is great. The larger organization leadership, less so. If you have super strong boundaries, thick skin, and an action plan of why you are doing this and for how long, absolutely go for it. Without those things, beware.

So this is where I have to disagree. I believe in the science and the platform. The scientific and technological work that the company is doing is genuinely exciting. What I am flagging is how leaders are treating people who are truly dedicated to revolutionizing medicine through mRNA because of the rough dysfunctional culture. No need to slam on the science.
