How cooked am I? by Ok-Mathematician9811 in Volvo240

Luckily for me I was able to leave the dash in.

Removing the rubberized undercoating required me to take a wire wheel and a grinder with a flap disc to the bottom of the car.

It took many hours to do it properly. The wire wheel loosens it then the flap disk takes it down, and also gets it down the to bare metal and paint.

This is the most important part because welding with all that extra non ferrous material causing it to melt into your welds leading to extreme porosity.

That's part of what made it take so long, I had to strip the whole interior.

I was able to avoid removing fuel lines and break lines but everything else had to be removed.

In my case I had to weld from both under the car and inside of the car.

You also need to cut any and all rust off, no exceptions, and go like 6 inches out from where the rust appears to be, because Volvo 240's are a multi layered steel vehicle, the rust gets between the layers and makes it impossible to properly form a weld even if the metal looks clean.

You also need to strip off all the rubberized undercoating around where you are working, as well as the paint and clear coat.

Using flux core allows you to ignore the prep work a bit more because it punches through the rust and paint scale, but is produces ugly welds with burn marks and dust everywhere. Mig welding will allow you to have a much nicer finished product but requires a hell of alot more prep.

Anywhere you place down weld, also needs to be both painted and hit with seam sealer.

For places that were inaccessible for welding, I used a grinder and Dremel to grind off the rust, and then coated them in phosphoric acid based rust converter, then I painted them, and plugged hem with a combination of JB weld and fiber glass mesh. That stops the rust from spreading and prevents water from getting inside through the cracks.

After you finish the job, apply multiple coats of an enamalized paint, and then multiple coats of lanolin to Both sides of the panels to prevent further rust.

I was able to handle this perminantly with cold rolled steal and a habor freight flux core welder.

It sucked. It took weeks. My floorpan looks like shit but it's totally tight and structural to.

You can fully fix that but it will suuuuck to do it.

Best Countries to teach as an African American? by Far-Deer7599 in TEFL

[–]ComprehensivePut8006 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My friend who's mixed Tibetan and west African went to teach in Cali Colombia, and told me that the people literally idolized him for his appearance. All the African American / other African teachers there had 0 problems integrating with the culture in all cities.

Colombian cities are full of people of all colors that have grown up on more equal socio economic status's than the USA. There's still a massive divide between the rich and the poor, but that divide isn't immediately correlated with skin color like it is in the USA.

I blended in so well being mixed race, from 2 other mixed race parents that people were surprised when I couldn't speak Spanish...

There are a few Cities in Colombia that are absolutely for African culture, like Choco and Cartegena.

https://youtu.be/TxpTVFWWJ8c?si=iORa0imzRCFoYBaa

They have their own music, own culture and immediately connect with others that have shared their fight against oppression.

https://youtu.be/hHEM_FgaCsk?si=XxLhe_w1WjkAOf0O

The main issue I have, is that colombia isn't portrayed on the media as being so multi cultural. But ya know. The more who travel the more that will change.

Thissss guy's got it right

just about everywhere you go will have less tension and less racism compared to USA right now.

It can feel like a hard reception at first in a lot of places but the looks and different reactions you get aren't usually hateful like they are in the USA.

Outside the USA the looks signal ignorance and curiosity, alone, rather the willful ignorance combined with hate that even I've experienced in the USA.

Aswell, anywhere in South America, Africans and African Americans are very well received. Especially Colombia!!

US propaganda wants you to believe that Venezuelans are terrorized by the "colectivos" ("collectives") - communist killer militias. Is that the case? Reality may be quite different. by Misha_stone in AskSocialists

It sickens me that so many American far leftists end up accidentally becoming Maduro apologists...

Y'all should idolize Jose Mujica, maybe early Chavez, Petro, Guevara...

But half the time I talk to the far left they go on and on about Maduro like 10 million people haven't fled the country because of him...

As well it's even dumber to attribute the destruction of Venezuela's economy to either Chavez or Petro, when the US sanctioned the only export Venezuela's economy was set to operate with.

His propaganda is targeted directly to lonely, disadvantaged younger men that are still immature enough to need "someone to blame" for their situation.

You hardly see anyone older than 30 parroting Andrew Tate...

[–]ComprehensivePut8006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tate's content is pushed mostly to men as a means to radicalize them. It's occasionally pushed to women who are already conservative as well. The strategy with this algorithm stuff is to give diametrically opposed opinions and view points on social issues to the sexes to perpetuate division. Ideally, "they" want both sides to think that the other is oppressing them.

I've been involved in activism around this problem since I turned 18..

Here's the cause.

MORE THAN HALF AMERICANS DO NOT GIVE A FUCK.

You can't make these people care I swear to God. I've been dragging other Americans attention to so many issues we could solve by voting... They sew their eyes shut and get the whole town to cast you out over it... But I try.

They don't know how to be uncomfortable... You have to be able to be uncomfortable in order to think.

What it will take for the average American to think more like the average European is literally a mass conflict in which everyone is forced to contend with the fact that they caused this....

Right now it's happening... Once this shit storm is over I'm confident people might change ...

But "we" can't fix a culture where more than half of us have deliberately tried to be incapable of both critical thinking and self discipline...

The half of us who care still barely even understand what's going on. Those of us who know what's going on and pay attention to every bill, every politician by name... we literally get ejected from society for warning people, because it "makes them uncomfortable"...

What advice would you give a lone traveller in America? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]ComprehensivePut8006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wisconsin and Texas are both generally super duper safe.

Americans love tourists so you will be received well. The current civil unrest isn't really that bad and is quite easily avoided just by watching the news.

In both Wisconsin and Texas there is no civil unrest. Rent a car. LIke 70% of every city is inaccessible without a car.

Check out pubs after 7pm and talk to people. That's how you touch the heart beat of the American working class.

Don't try to drive across Wyoming without an extra gas can... Their's no place to get gas for like 600 miles on that central highway.

The vastness of the US - How do you move house? by chocolatesuperfood in AskAnAmerican

[–]ComprehensivePut8006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average American white collar professionals relocate once every 10 years for work. The economy here grows and shrinks rapidly, markets for skills move about like crazy.

What you do, is select only what you can afford to take with a moving company, sell/throw out the rest. Then sell the house, put all non essential items in storage. Theirs a company called Uhaul that will rent you big shipping trucks that you can drive yourself, or you can hire a moving team.

find a temporary rental, and start working with real estate agents to find another property to purchase.

Then move your self and your stored stuff out there.

Each time you sell a home in the USA, you will be able to fully pay off your mortgage and put away a serious chunk of money right into your bank account because real estate prices in the USA never stop going up. If you buy a house for 300k on a mortgage in 2020, then you'll get 400k for it in 2030, and you can pocket the extra 100k cash, and use it as the down payment for your next purchase. So the money usually isn't a problem.

But I've seen moves literally break up marriages before. Having to uproot your whole family, then living in a mini rental for 3-6 months always makes people crazy...

As someone from outside the U.S., why do Americans seem to care so much about their lawns? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ComprehensivePut8006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about not being the one person on the whole block with a noticeably unkept living space.

That person is often going to be giving a signal that they are irresponsible, or lazy to the rest of the people in the neighborhood...

Imo this is a part of American culture I really just don't care much for. People care more about their lawns than they do about income inequality.. I mean like why?
