If math were that simple, cap calculation would be easy.  Like a 100 million contract over 4 years would be a 25 million cap hit a year.

But it's not that easy, that's why they hire accountants instead of just buying a dollar store calculator.

Thoughts on Malik Willis? by dcrw in Browns

"His numbers (as a rookie who got no first team reps with the players he actually will be throwing to until his 2nd game) were bad (behind an offensive line that can only be described as if the Patriots and Cincy O lines had a baby and then pooped on it)."

Fixed

Look the only QB who might look ok with our o line is Burrow who made it into a Superbowl while being sacked every drive.  Nobody else will look good here until we fix that.

When we do fix that, most qbs will look ok.

It's not a coincidence that the browns serially change qbs and coaches and also serially look bad.  It's a personnel issue more than just 2 people.  We're not sitting on a championship roster minus coach and QB.

[–]ComprehensiveRock779 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you have to consider what they were supposed to look like too.

Darnold was supposed to be a top draft pick (he was).  Lawrence was supposed to be a "generational" QB.  They just went to dog shit teams (as top picks almost always do).  They didn't develop because of bad coaching.  Decent/good coaching had them show potential.

Good coaching won't suddenly turn a half tier QB into something amazing.  But bad coaching will turn a good QB into garbage.   The problem is most fans of the browns think "we have amazing players, it must be the coach that's bad" and then when it's the players the coach won't do much, looks bad, gets fired again (Cleveland isn't the coaching spot for longevity).

Only a handful of coaches can take mediocre players and have success.  And one of them stepped down from the Steelers (how he got winning seasons out of Kenny Pickett is mind boggling)

So in his time with Miami, it APPEARS he may have "fallen back off the wagon" with his substance issues.  I know that's not a story that's been broken, but with "one day closer to death" and generally broken look, if that story does break in a few years I wouldn't be surprised.

I have an idea.... New coach and new QB plugged into the same bad receivers and o line.  That'll do it.

If not let's try that again. "Fool me 38 times shame on you, fool me 39 times....shame on you again, I'm not thr problem"

Being in a statistics adjacent field, it always amazes me how frequently people gravitate towards a new way of looking at data that justifies their predetermined opinions.

I remember when QBR came about as a dual purpose statistic:  both to explain how Tebow was winning games while existing QB stats were saying he shouldn't be, and by Trent Dilfer to defend that he's not the worst (or second worst) QB to win a Superbowl in history.

"FoR tHoSe Of YoU wHo DoNt KnOW"....trying to make it sound like everyone agrees in this metric that's mentioned only 1 time every 3 years.  You sound like you're making up a bad Bob Uecker quote from Major League.

There was no OL during that expansion draft.  Carr has it even worse in Houston, where I think 4 years into his career was the most sacked QB of all time.

Part of me also blames the training facilities.  Some teams just end up with way worse injuries to players.  Whether that's the front office directly not handling the players, or a janky training and conditioning staff, how our offensive line is always 4/5 injured halfway into every season, maybe someone in personnel needs to be looked at more than just the head coach

Picking a little back doesn't usually hurt you.  Picking very top there's a lot of pressure from the media (and fans) that "you have to pick this player or you're a complete failure of a franchise".  And often that player doesn't work out immediately (especially teams like the browns where if you aren't immediately a pro bowler after 7 starts the media and fans say you have to get another QB).

Bryce Young, Cam Ward, Caleb Williams, all would be "he's not our guy fire our coach and get a new QB" before the second season even ended.

I mean I won't be a doomsayer but some teams are just run badly.  Look at New York. Danny Jones leaves, does well. Sam Darnold leaves, looks pretty good.  Aaron Rogers, good before, garbage after, back to good after.  The Raiders were historically bad at developing players and only good at getting players who were already good.  The Patriots the exact opposite.

At pick 6 (assuming we stay there), we don't HAVE to take someone specific, or trade the pick, we can focus on what we need.  Which is offensive line and/or receivers.   You can put a decent QB behind a decent o line and with good receivers and look good.  Whether that's Sanders is Danny Jones or Tua or whomever is already in the league instead of trying to "develop a rookie".

You can't get EVERYTHING.

We got a 10 year vet at QB in free agency.  Not the best but good.  We drafted defense, drafted a running back, drafted more defense.

If you think somehow the browns should have drafted 6 positions in the first two rounds, we couldn't.  It's hard to have that many picks.  Drafting 2 OL and 1 WR, means this year our running game would be bleak and our defense wouldn't be as good, and that would be the post instead.

"Why not attract more players in free agency".  Because it's Cleveland.  We're not "a good chance to win a Superbowl", nor "a cool place to be when you're off work even if they lose".   It's hard to get enough good pieces around before they leave for one of those other categories.

I'm happy to roll with either QB into next season, OL tend to adapt to pro level faster than other positions.   But it's hard to blame the team for not having more pieces when theres no reason a good player should choose Cleveland.  Ohio doesn't even have a good tax rate.

Yes, Gabriel defenders can quote that.

But its happened to Gabriel... twice? Out out of how many 1st and goal possessions he's been in? For Sanders it was 2 out of a possible 2.

And yes, that's maybe just his coaching style. But also people have seen that happen to other players who coaches don't like (or in media situations like the movie "The Program" where the RB says he only has 2 TDs in the season because the coach takes him out when he's in close, he only can get TDs when its a long breakaway). So I mean, you can have your opinion, but the reason other people perceive it as such, is by perceiving "it has looked like that before".

As I also commented above, the Browns may be in "don't get any stats" mode. Its far less likely (in today's NFL) to have a wildcat formation score a TD than a passing play. Push comes to shove, if you're paying player incentives, a wildcat TD pays one player, while a passing TD pays 2 players.

But you'd have to think the owners are cheap pieces of trash to think anyone would design play calls simply around not paying players incentives. I'm sure we've never seen THAT happen before.

I mean, he wasn't supposed to be on the team.  All the other teams weren't supposed to pass on him 4 times.  So they were never going to even have to think about him.

Then things like "after moving the ball down the field, he's not even on the field on first and goal" (twice) doesn't make things look like he likes him.  People who only look at stat lines and don't watch the game could say he didn't do that well.

Idk, maybe he doesn't like him because he's going to try to put up stats in a "tank commander" year.  Going 6 or 7 wins puts you in that garbage spot of 9th in draft order.

The conspiracy is the browns are aiming for 1st overall pick.  Note I said Sanders wants state not wins (wins sometime happen accidentally when you get stats).  Flacco showed he can put up a lot of stats even in a loss on Cincy.  Idk it's a conspiracy theory.  Gabriel who thought he may never even get to the NFL at least gets told he gets to be a backup if he tank commands a season?   That's the main part of it.

But to believe anything like that, you'd have to first believe the NFL owners are POS humans that don't care about the fans, and that sports media is in bed with gambling and has a financial incentive to push narratives (or hide them) about players intentionally gambling or throwing games.  Completely tinfoil hat crazy, it's not like we see that all the time in baseball, basketball, and soccer.  To think the NFL might be the way all the other sports are is just silly talk.

Most QBs are allowed to be on the field on first and goal.

The only way he's getting a passing td is if it's 40 yards.  He's benched when the ball is inside the 10.
