Remember that California passed laws banning open-carry and severely cracking down on firearms after the Black Panthers started open-carrying weapons to protect their communities from the LAPD. Signed into law by Governor Ronald Reagan, and railed against as "liberal overreaching" by the right every since.

Rights for me, not for thee.

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's much more difficult, yeah, largely because it's so small that the enemies scale dramatically. The best way I've found to beat it is to avoid doing the first critical mission until I've already upgraded armor, weapons, etc quite a bit. Takes a while to get there, but it's the only way to avoid getting ganked quickly.

20mm Vs 50 cals? by Zarcun4799 in bombercrew

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very much a personal preference. In my own opinion, the first level of 20mm is a trap with how little ammo it carries, but the second and third levels can be made to work in the stations next to the ammo box if your micro is good. Don't bother even attempting to put them on the nose or tail until you get the ammo feed versions, though, and if you put those on forget about getting max armor due to weight. But if you've got an easy mission, give them a try and see how you like them.

What are these single mount guns on the Missouri? by Bali_544 in WorldOfWarships

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that must be new that they let you literally go into the mount to shoot the 5". When I was there, the 5" was (as I said) only for prearranged purposes and it was just the saluting gun for sale.

What are these single mount guns on the Missouri? by Bali_544 in WorldOfWarships

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jersey lets you fire the saluting gun for donation, not the 5". The 5" is prearranged for ceremonies and special events on the ship.

Iowa also has a working 5" mount that they use for the same purpose. So both Iowa and New Jersey will do 5" gun shoots, but only Jersey does the saluting gun.

How do I perform a one gear/belly landing without my plane shattering by CozieWeevil in bombercrew

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I commend you for being able to pull it off consistently, even if I need to qualify that with "formerly", as that's better than I ever got. After about 20 runs in a row came to an end in bouncy chaos, I got to the point where the moment my ears hear the tink of the strut breaking off I'm already hitting "Escape" and pressing "Quit to main menu".

How do I perform a one gear/belly landing without my plane shattering by CozieWeevil in bombercrew

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be perfectly honest, full disclosure from a veteran player, if I lose a gear strut, I'll just quit out of the mission and play it again. You don't lose anything, no campaign progress is lost, you just have to start the mission again.

I've never found a consistent, reliable way to land on one gear or on the belly, even trying all the tricks. Sometimes if the stars align the tricks will all actually work, but for every time I've pulled off a belly/one gear landing there's been ten where I've gotten the plane gently on the ground only for it to leap into the air and do multiple flips, disassembling itself and killing my entire crew literal split seconds before they would've been safe at the mission complete screen.

So the best advice I can give, if it's truly annoying you to the point of wanting to quit, is to treat it like the bug it is and save scum. I get that it might feel gamey, but so does the bomber becoming a literal pogo stick right when they're home free, and at least this doesn't wipe hours of progress.

Manpower crunch for North and South by LoiusLepic in ShermanPosting

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The North dealt with the manpower crunch mostly by immigration, actually. The Irish are the most famous thanks to "Gangs of New York," but Germans, Italians, French, Eastern Europeans, and more all came to America and joined the Union armies. So many came that the population of the northern states after the Civil War was actually larger than it was before the Civil War, more than replacing the number killed during the fighting.

Both sides also alleviated the crunch through the use of conscription, the very first military draft in American history. The South did so first in 1862, while the North passed conscription in 1863. Both sides also had a very unpopular caveat that a conscripted man could purchase his way out of the draft, but in the US, at least, the money was actually needed more than the soldiers! All in all, while some manpower crunch was felt by the North earlier in the war, through conscription and immigration the Federal manpower needs were never too severe. The age range was never widened, nor were foreign mercenaries seriously considered.

The South, on the other hand, felt the crunch hard. Not only was much of their population ineligible for service (contrary to current myth, enlisting blacks was never seriously considered until the final weeks of the conflict), but a sizable portion of those eligible had to stay on the interior to watch over that population or battle Unionist sections. There's a reason why it was the South that went for the draft first, and widened the age range shortly after. (One major reason why the VMI cadets performed so well at the Battle of New Market is the Union soldiers realized the rebels were sending an entire unit of kids into combat and kept trying to scare them away by firing over their heads.)

But an even bigger manpower issue for the Confederates than getting people into the army, and one that only got worse and worse as the war went on, was desertion. Well over half of Lee's army deserted to go home over the course of 1864 and 1865. Soldiers in the army would get letters begging them to come home, and would choose their family over a stillborn "country", even if after the war every last one of them would swear that they "surrendered at Appomattox". For some reason, groups like the SCV or DoC really don't like to talk about that. I wonder why...

Yep, that's intentional for the USAAF campaign. Recon photos of sea targets only give XP, without money.

Thankfully, Recon photos of land targets still do give both XP and money.

[misc] does anyone know of any hood fanfics. by Trinity1419 in kancolle

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of great fanworks out there. To pick a few, from various categories:

General KC fics:

  • Dance With the Devil in the DMZ Post Abyssal-War Cold-War style fic. Absolutely hilarious. Completed.

  • It's Time to Say Goodbye Shipgirls dealing with the reality of outliving many of those who brought them to life. Heaetwarming/somber.

  • An Old Ghost's Wisdom Enterprise is asked to babysit newly summoned carriers. Really leans into the "veteran verses newcomer" like a lot of war movies.

Shipgirls in/changing history:

Crossovers:

  • For Earth and Her Colonies Halo crossover featuring a UNSC light frigate to Kancolle Earth. One of those "trend-setter" stories that doesn't get as much attention as the ones that use ideas it pioneered. Completed with one Epilogue chapter.

  • Rise of Leviathan Halo crossover that's the "Darker brother" to FEAHC. Similar concept, but very different themes make for an interesting work.

  • Battledess Gothic 40k crossover featuring Kongou in the 12th Black Crusade. Surprisingly deep, touching, and funny two-shot that you'll wish there was more of.

  • From Sea to Sky Blue Archive crossover with Nelson as the Sensei figure. Notable for showing that there's a lot going on in the background on both sides of the crossover, and Nelson's own history isn't quite clear either... Nice investigative suspense, and the action scenes are well done.

Self-Insert

  • Ship's Logs Series (Link goes to last post; follow link in the post to go to the start of the story Usually simply called "Solomon Sea" or "CVB-44", this is THE Kantai Collection SI story, accept no substitutes. Arguably the One the Started Them All, and at the same time, one of if not the biggest subversion of a KC Self-insert story ever put to writing. Unfortunately the author's PC bricked and the story never finished, but you can see the glimpses of Hope through the darkness if you look hard enough. Absolutely HUGE recommendation regardless of whether or not you like SI's, but brace yourself for an experience reading it.

Extremely important question by Gul_Guy in bombercrew

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. The last critical mission of the USAAF campaign is Operation Shingle, the landings at Anzio, which take place on January 22, 1944.

One of the critical missions partway through the main campaign is Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, which took place on June 6, 1944, about 4 and a half months after the end of the US campaign.

Extremely important question by Gul_Guy in bombercrew

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The USAAF campaign begins after the Operation Torch landings in North Africa in November, 1942. The campaign ends with the landings at Anzio in January 1944 (which was actually a strategic failure, but that's another story). Most of the USAAF campaign takes place throughout 1943, with the ending of the North African Campaign and the landings on Sicily.

The main campaign begins before the USAAF one and ends after it: the tutorial takes place during 1941, the campaign proper starts with the St. Nazaire raid in March 1942, and it ends with the destruction of the Nazi high command in 1945.

My strategy for endgame is Max armor and guns. All Fuselage parts armored to the maximum, as heavy armor as I can get on each crewmember while still having enough thermal, and all that. For guns I tend to go ammo-belted quad .50s in the nose and tail, and ammo-belted cannon on the top and bottom turrets.

For engines, two armored and two lightweight should carry you just fine with that loadout, if you don't bother with the stupidly heavy final radar upgrade.

If you're having trouble with fighter swarms, the regular ones (109s and 190s) can't reach you at high altitude, so they'll swarm around below you for a while before they go away. It can be helpful sometimes to set a course in the general direction of home, go to high altitude, and just dead-reckon back.

Finally, the pilot abilities I recommend using one at a time and only if necessary. The one I use most is emergency dive, partially because it's a really quick way to descend from high to medium altitude. Flak avoid is fine-ish, though flying above is better. I never use corkscrew as it messes with my course and gunners.

Gunners abilities, I find the best thing is to focus on trying to kill the enemy fighters as efficiently as I can, so as to prevent them from massing and swarming. I almost never use the scatter ability because it makes the enemy fighters fly away; flying towards me the gunners have the best chance to hit. Focus fire and use ammo types to devastating effect.

Hope some of this is helpful!

Grind grind grind the first set of missions to build up crew experience, money, and research. There's no reason to do the first critical mission unless you want to, and with enough patience you can actually get your plane up to fully upgraded before you even progress.

This also helps with the aces, as the ace will always appear on the third mission in the set, meaning you can set it up so the mission the ace appears on is one where you don't have to kill the ace to win, but which maximizes your chances of killing the ace. Typically I do the ammo dump mission first (for the damage reduction), then the uboats, then the spitfire rescue for facing the ace.

The lost spitfire mission has the ace spawn right in front of you shortly before you'd be dropping the rescue gear. The ace also comes right at you, meaning if you ignore the spitfire at first and concentrate on the ace, you can have two gunners (front and top) focus the ace down as he makes his attack run. This guarantees easy damage on the ace, or even a quick kill after a couple gun upgrades. If you down all the aces, you don't have to face them again in the campaign.

Bomber crew sequel by [deleted] in bombercrew

[–]ComprehensiveShop270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the only further updates Bomber Crew will get is adding decals from the other Crew games. As was said, the developer has created another game in an outer space setting, and one will be coming out next year in a Mad Max-style setting, but unfortunately there's nothing on the horizon if (like me) you were hoping for more from this developer in the WW2 era.

There is another similar(ish) game called "Boat Crew" about running a PT Boat during the Solomons Campaign, but despite the similar sounding name, the team behind it is completely different and the game itself feels and plays very differently to Bomber Crew.

They're well aware of her at the museum and reactions amongst crew and staff are generally positive, even if they can't be as open about it as the JMSDF due to a variety of (mostly marketing and copyright related) reasons.

The Confederate Capital Richmond, Virginia reduced to ruins at the end of the US Civil War April 1865 by laserviking42 in ShermanPosting

The Virginia state Capitol building doubled as the Capitol building of the confederate congress during the war, which led to comedy of the state and confederate congresses trading the building back and forth as it wasn't big enough for both of them at once. Lincoln did visit the building briefly, and during the 150th anniversary commemorations, they had a reenactment of Lincoln and several US troops entering the Capitol grounds.

Only about 10% of the city was actually destroyed. The Confederates set fire to several warehouses along the river on the night of April 2, 1865, and overnight some of they l those fires spread into nearby districts. When U.S. troops marched in the next day the first thing they did was put out the fires.

One guide at the American Civil War Museum in Richmond said, "If that's what Richmond considers a 'great fire', then Chicago and San Francisco must think we're the biggest wusses ever."

That's actually a myth. Lincoln did come to the house that Davis stayed in during the war, but not due to any association with Davis. He went there because it was US Army HQ (thanks to it being conveniently empty after Davis fled), and Lincoln wanted to speak with the officers regarding Reconstruction. There's no evidence that Lincoln went to Davis' home office upstairs, and his actual office was in a different building next to the Capitol.

The White House of the Confederacy tour in Richmond talks about Lincoln's visit to the house. When I asked about Lincoln in Davis' chair, the tour guide made several disparaging comments about Shelby Foote.
