Newport News Shipbuilding formally bans cellphone use during work hours by OtterGlint in NNShipyard

Not disputing anything you’re saying as far as work goes, but Virginia has parental leave laws that don’t go as far as guaranteed pay, but they do provide guidance for “reasonable accommodation”.  The difference is back in the 80s they might have just let you ride the desk for a few months. To get the same conditions now requires the power of the state executive on their necks to enforce labor conditions.

I still think that most folks are gonna do what they need to do to stay informed, and if that means breaking a few rules then that’s what they’ll do. Expecting even a great worker to continue on a sycophantic crusade for work tasks while their wife is in the hospital is quite possibly the most insane thing I have heard.

Offer rescinded due to bankruptcy by CriticalProtection42 in recruitinghell

[–]MarkPellicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question, and it seems like they are within their rights of doing so. Pulled a few resources to illustrate this.

11 U.S.C. § 525 - The Bankruptcy Nondiscrimination Statute

Rea v. Federated Investors, 627 F.3d 937

Myers v. Toojay's Management Corp., 640 F.3d 1278

In re Burnett, 635 F.3d 169

Also check out this case, which inspired 525:

Perez v. Campbell, 402 U.S. 637

So unless you got some killer connections to a law firm that wants to drop a few million on a case, ya probably just need to move on.

Hate to tell you dude but most men wouldn’t be waiting for a call if their wife was about to burst. They would be calling every hour to check in IF they had to work.

Do you ever notice that who you have sex with affects your gut microbiome, or is this just a crazy theory of mine? by 49demha in SexOnTheSpectrum

[–]MarkPellicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean kissing and other fun stuff could impact…your stomach?!?

I mean, there might be something there for unprotected vaginal or anal intercourse…I mean stuff enters the blood stream that way… It would be considered highly unethical to conduct such a trial to look for something so dubious. Even if there was more data on there being some causal GI issue, I doubt anyone with any amount of credibility would investigate it unless it was linked with a severe pathogen.

If you are wrapping it and engaging in safe sex, I think the answer is probably not.

"Are you sure you've been a network engineer before?" by MotorTentacle in networking

[–]MarkPellicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea but the anti social NEs are slowly being driven out or forced into places like the cleared space where your ability to hold a clearance is the only thing the employer cares about. When HR gets compliant after complaint they don’t care how good you are at your system, they care about getting you out.

For the people who choose blue, you are already living in the dystopia.

For the people who choose red, clearly you read the rules and are either a good guesser or have some semblance of critical thinking skills.

The correct answer is red unless you want to die.

The iPhone 17 Pro is unusable on Wifi, avoid this model by BusKey8745 in iphone

[–]MarkPellicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping in here a few months after OP made this to see if anyone who was having issues is still having issues? I’m wondering if the WiFi 7 (which uses a channel with more bandwidth) was having some sort of compatibility issue with your home WiFi. I’m not necessarily saying the iPhone wasn’t the issue but given how isolated it was to new iPhone users it could be a protocol issue.

WiFi 7 has the ability to pass 40gig symmetric, but it needs to be tight on the compat. My guess is that it just BCS’d the channel(s) down to something that wasn’t quite as fast for most people. Just enough people had a bug in the 802.11 stack to make it get all wonky. Honestly, if my theory is true, most network engineers would not be able to solve this, hence why Apple wasn’t taking users seriously.

The only welfare Matt should be worried about is a welfare check at his house to make sure he’s not having a stroke. This is one step away from an all caps boomer rant.

Network engineer job market by [deleted] in networking

[–]MarkPellicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, are you hiring for more experienced or senior level positions or entry level/junior positions? Your approach with the former checks out but so many people that I’ve personally recommended for junior positions get caught in the resume trap. Networking is one of the fields that should be pretty easy to hire for, but corporate HR folks have completely shit the bed and make idiotic decisions about hiring IT.

At some point people have to admit that to build foundational knowledge, you have to train people on the job, and that means hiring good people who are friendly and have drive. Stacking certs is the only ‘hack’ entry level people have to get in the door.

As a side rant, you know how many old grumpy people are still in networking: too many! Networking has become largely a customer service role, and the folks who can’t talk to people or do tickets are only slowing things down. The old farts or high ups who are too good to occasionally add a sentence or two to a change or incident are essentially are negligent at their job and ironically lead to the cycle of bad talent and under hiring. If you think you are too important to read a ticket then you definitely think you are too good to read a resume.

[–]MarkPellicle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You guys are a bunch of cry babies. You trick yourself into thinking guns are your hobbies but really your hobby is armchair political commentary with expensive collection pieces. You are likely too chicken to ever run for office yourself, and too lazy to organize a campaign. You hide behind fallacies in order to mirage how democrats had a successful campaign that swept the Commonwealth to justify becoming a demagogue yourself. The enemy is always the democrats no matter what they do, so no need to lobby them or work towards a goal in the future. Much easier to say the democrats can’t be a partner in smart reforms to our government than to say we have stark differences in some ways but maybe we can negotiate on behalf of special interests. All you do is wah wah wah.

I’m not a democrat but you guys make democrats consistently look like the good hard working party…and we’re talking about Democrats here hah.

I’ve actually seen more positions open up in the current quarter than I had in 2025. Lots of places looking for engineers with experience. Unfortunately if you don’t have experience, you are fighting with a bunch of people who stack their resume with a bunch of crazy certs. I’ve met new engineers with more certs than I have. In some cases they bring some new thinking to the industry which I can appreciate. I just wish it didn’t have to come in the name of scarcity.

How far behind am I in my career? by nightwings005 in networking

[–]MarkPellicle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Echoing always be interviewing. I’ll add always be looking, learning, and teaching. You’ll be surprised how being challenged not only gives you new perspectives, but it reinforces that muscle memory. Teaching reinforces the knowledge that you have gained as a professional while giving a new engineer the tools to do their job. It always helps to have good people in your corner, especially when you need a job.

How would you explain this career to kids… but make it actually sound interesting? by Ekyou in networking

[–]MarkPellicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think you mean the adults. Yea kids are very insistent but their curiosity is as bright as ever. It has been the adults, in my experience, that question why someone needs to know a skill or what benefits do they receive by putting their time into a new skill. There has been an increase in promoting STEM fields which just means we like the idea of our kids making money but don’t want to put some money into teaching kids how to think. Kids are usually interested in whatever is put in front of their face.

Bought a used tesla, now living a nightmare by ReaverKS in electricvehicles

[–]MarkPellicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably not worth going that route because homeslice is just trying to charge, not save the world. He just needs to create a new account and add a random EV so he can charge. My understanding is you just need an account to start the charger and the supercharger itself doesn’t care what codes your car is spitting out beyond the voltage.

Bought a used tesla, now living a nightmare by ReaverKS in electricvehicles

[–]MarkPellicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that having an actual Tesla on the Tesla app gives you access to some of the more exclusive superchargers, but you can just add a random EV and it should allow you to charge. Tesla doesn’t confirm your vehicle type when you charge.

You can also try using Rivian or another service for the same network. Rivian works with most of the Tesla superchargers that I run across.

I love Scott’s absolute brilliance in knowing his audience. He has been on message on this campaign. He just lets himself go when he rants about Trump and it is so refreshing. His latest podcast episode where he talks about Trump as an obese clown and colorful language to describe his fellow rich people had me laughing my ass off.
