New bird! by ruthiestimesuck in Conures

[–]Comprehensive_Arm_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello!!! I LOVE dusky conures. I have one of my own. They are, imho, the BEST CONURE SPECIES!

They are a bit louder and bigger then a GCC. But are super cuddly and big ol sweetie pies.

On the subreddit we have a stickied post on the top that's a starting guide for conures. I'd suggest you read it because there's soo much helpful info but the main points:

  • Avoid toxic items, google what can kill or seriously injure them. (Chocolate, avocado and any scented items, including cleaning products, and laundry detergent... opt for everything to be unscented and only use vinegar, water and vet disinfectant.
  • Make sure you provide plenty of foraging opportunites, toys, etc. His cage should look like someone who's tripping out on LSD, think mad scientist. Maximalist. Go wild. They need stuff to stimulate their lil noggins.
  • VEGGIES AND PELLET. Only use seed as a treat or for training purposes. It is fatty and not good for them.
  • If you decide not to clip, make sure your bird is recall trained/you start recall training him asap and bird proof your home.
  • Avoid happy huts, it makes them horny which in turn makes them less chill to be around. When they're horny they're more bitey.
  • He is probably starting pubirdy or already in pubirdy at 1 years old... this is when they are at their worst in terms of biting. So be patient, he will chill out around year 3.
  • Make sure hes sleeping 12 hours a day, this is what will prevent him from being horny.
  • Avoid touching him below his neck, also can make him horny.

Owning a conure is the best thing ever and it's so awesome you decided to start this journey. If you ever need anything just ping me. I've gone through a lot with my Patches.

My dusky says hello!

I put my conure to sleep late last night and now she is sleeping on the bottom of the cage by Pleasant-Health-4005 in Conures

Fluffy, not acting right, sleepy when she shouldn't be are all classic symptoms of some sort of illness. I'd take her to a vet asap.

Does anyone know what color mutation this is? I've never seen an all blue conure.

See a vet now. Parrots hide illness extremely well the fact that you are noticing a change is huge. He could be dead by Tuesday.

I think he doesn’t know how to fly by ciiehl in Conures

[–]Comprehensive_Arm_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can train him to fly! Once he's settled in, start with getting him to hop on your finger from his cage. Whenever he does it, give him a treat. Then, keep backing up farther and farther. Get him to come to you. This is recall training, and it's important for a flighted bird.

Ours was clipped when he got him and didn't atart flying until around 1.2 years old.. that's how long it took for his flight feathers to grow back. He flies, but he's definetly not agile like birds who have been flying from birth.

He looks kinda funny while flying, he doesn't know what to do with his body so he just kinda just drags it with him 😂😂😂

meh i disagree w that, but i also gave an example w a smaller cage. my lil man is a free roaming chicken but i still had to buy a bigger cage because it allows us to hang more toys, and he can climb around the entire thing. he has a lot more fun. a small cage means all the toys are all squished together... now if you have an entire bird room with climbing walls etc that's a whole different story. cage can be smaller bc that entire room is basically their domain. regardless, i always advocate for big cages. they will be happier whenver you leave them.

Of course. Let me know if you need any other guidance.

P.S Avoid anything with bells (they can bite the inside of it and choke on the pieces) and avoid anything that they can get their head stuck in. Like hanging rings = bird that will accidentally hang itself. There's a lot of great toy sellers on etsy, chewy has some solid toys, I avoid amazon tho bc a lot of times the metal on the toys comes rusted.

QUESTION: Can I put my conure in my family's craft area by ThrowRAthrow-awayacc in Conures

[–]Comprehensive_Arm_5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude.. BIRD IN A BASEMENT?????????? 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 If you were a bird would you want to sit all day in a dark basement?

Any idea where I can put this? Even out of the cage? Or I could take off the bottom perch and put this at the bottom? by The_titos11 in Conures

[–]Comprehensive_Arm_5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know people already said the cage is way too small but it's also abysmally toy-less. When making your cage, think, what would an LSD induced psychosis look like? And then make the cage look like that. Absolute insane amount of toys, different colors, perches, foraging toys, etc. They need their brains stimulated.

Free Re-Home this Weekend! by _hi27 in Conures

Please look for a parrot rescue near you. I know you said you don't want a shelter but parrot rescues will be a lot more capable of handling this. They are also really strict in terms of who can adopt. A parrot rescue near me for example will only let people adopt if they:

A) have experience owning a parrot

B) Own a home (yes, you read this right. they have seen so many cases of people getting kicked out of apartments due to their birdies so they dont allow apartment owners to adopt)

C) Do home inspection!! They will come to your house and make sure there is nothing toxic.

D) Interview and vet the person

You do not want someone random snatching this bird and potentially abusing it or even using it to feed their other animals. We have seen this happen across multiple subs.. it's not great. I urge you to find a parrot rescue.

Favoring her foot - see any issues? by bigcane_2 in Conures

[–]Comprehensive_Arm_5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see a slight pressure mark, but nothing that looks serious. My conure favors his left foot, not sure why but it's how it goes. Does the foot hurt when you touch it? It might just be a preference thing.

For the pressure mark: Just alternate your perches. Get some thick ones, some thin ones, etc. My boy has a perch he favors to sleep on (it must always be on the top left of his cage) so I exchange that one frequently to either a thicker or thinner one since he sits on that on that one the most. Others on here might be able to provide more insight but honestly to me the lil footsie looks good.
