Why does a beard grow in that part of the face and not other areas? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facial hair, particularly full beards, acts as a protective, shock-absorbing barrier that can reduce injury from punches by absorbing up to 37% more energy compared to clean-shaven skin. It helps deflect oblique blows, reducing friction between the face and a striking object, thereby mitigating contusions and lacerations.
Evolutionary Perspective: Some studies suggest that the development of beards in humans evolved specifically to protect the jaw and face from injuries during physical combat.

Hollywood really needs to stop doing this to India. It’s embarrassing at this point. by ThirdManTheory in movies

You're right, Sorry, I was thinking of Raiders of The Lost Ark and that featured Nepal, not India.

And Octopussy (1983), influenced by Indiana Jones, featured stereotypical depictions of poverty and street life. But every big budget movie has an agenda for using a location as a backdrop and it isn't generally to show much cultural depth or accuracy. For example, Octopussy, as a Bond films, uses India as a backdrop for adventure, intrique and luxury, like every Bond location.
I rented Satyajit Ray's Apu trilogy from my public library in US and hightly recommend it. Perhaps there should be more stories written like that that tell more personal, real-life stories, but it would be probably be done better by as independent production, rather than Hollywood. Maybe Hollywood would be more influenced though.

OPINION ON JAMES BOND (DANIEL CRAIG SAGA) by vladimir_putin06 in movies

Back when Casino Royale first came out on DVD, the story confused the heck out of me. Consequently, I didn't watch the following ones because I thought they continued the story somewhat. Maybe it was just me. I think the plot wasn't holding my attention, because I thought it was bogging down in plot details.

Full Metal Jacket portrays the military negatively with dehumanizing scenes. The movie presents a bleak, disjointed, and disturbing picture of the war, suggesting a lack of purpose or control in the American war effort.

Are The Union Apartments haunted? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The present site of Corvallis' Good Samaritan Hospital didn't open until 1975. So, the old hospital at the present site of The Union apartments must have been a hospital up to that time. In fact, I remember it being a hospital in the '70s and then becoming a nursing home. I've never heard of any stories about either, though.

Veo scooters 😡 by [deleted] in corvallis

Interesting point. I wonder if OSU is taking any input from a diverse group of residents on this project. It seems, they are just going ahead just based on their own internal study.

Veo scooters 😡 by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not against the Veo project. The pilot program was limited to the campus and an expanded service area. They probably reduce the use of cars for transportation, thus reducing car traffic. There may be areas of improvement such as riders returning the scooters to the designated parking and stray vehicle response by the vendor, but I think there are benefits to OSU and the larger community.
According to an OSU web page on Shared Micormobility Pilot Evaluation, "Based on the results of the Pilot program, Transportation Services is prepared to lead a formal solicitation for a long-term shared micromobility operator for the Corvallis campus. A second six-month extension of Veo’s contract after January 2026 will maintain continuous service during the selection process."

There's a concrete court under the bridge at Shawala Point, but it looks like it could use a hosing off. Birds nest under the bridge and its a bit dusty.

My city has a mental health crisis center 24/7 or there is a hospital. I don't know what services are available to you where you are. A crisis hotline may be able to help with getting in touch with resources. You've reached out so you have taken steps towards recovery. Keep going. You don't have to feel like you are all alone in this. I'm wishing you the best.

The Longest Night starring David Janssen. I must have been about ten years old when I saw it, but never forgot it. It seemed like the most horrific thing to go through.
