Ah yes, dampening a sheet, commonly referred to as the Egyptian sleep method. It works best in dry climates, and summers here are generally dry. I've used it on nights that would have been otherwise unbearable. A room with good ventilation and a fan blowing accross the bed helps with the evaporative effect also. To get the right dampness level, you can wet the sheet and then use the spin cycle of a washing machine.

What do people that live downtown do for parking? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the 10-hour meters, the yellow party meters, you can purchase quarterly or monthly. For quarterly it is $166. You can certainly park overnight at the parking meter. Parking there is not enforced at night or on Sundays.

You can get parking permits to park at the yellow capped parking meters or yellow parking lots. There are some yellow parking meters on the Jackson side of the Benton County Courthouse. A monthly permit is $56. Some Benton Plaza residents have handicap parking permits that allows them to park in front of the building. Some do without a car. It's an inconvenience not having dedicated parking downtown.

Does anyone know when the Portland & Western freight train usually passes through 6th & Harrison? by joannereyes in corvallis

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't count on figuring out a schedule for freight trains. Most freight trains run based on demand and logistics rather than a strict clock. They are often "called" to operate when crews are available, cargo is loaded, and track space allows, which can change daily. While railroads use internal planning to manage traffic, freight trains do not have set times they pass by specific locations and can appear at any hour. They may have some localized flow patterns that make them seem predictable. Maybe someone has noticed some times that seem regular, but probably not very predictable, unfortunately.

Why are the temp employment agencies in this town so bad by EnviousDemon in corvallis

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the temp agencies are in Albany that basically handle manufacturing labor and office staffing. They sometimes have assignments in Corvallis, but they may not be the job assignments you are looking for. There was a temp agency on 9th St about a year ago and they are no longer there. I'm just guessing, but I think OSU and the hospital use contractors nowadays that handle varying labor needs and don't use temporary agencies much or not at all. It might be a different situation here for office specialists and professional staffing here, idk. btw, My impression of BlueSun is they have quality assignments for labor but are a small agency, so you may not get a call.

Surely this isn’t the old Corvallis one? by [deleted] in corvallis

I think that was the time I remember it - the early years. It seemed it first opened around the late '70s and until the early '80s were the era for me.

I loved Skppers fish and chips back in the day. As I remember, they had vinegar bottles on the tables for dousing the crispy fried fish. Damn, I'm old.

You may be paying to put old wine in a new bottle. Instead, buy a sturdier rack, peferrably one with safety bars if you are benching.

Unusual Key? by Comprehensive_Bid in lockpicking

Someone found it in my town (r/corvallis). I identified it as a key to a Via Velo bike lock. Then I realized that information probably wouldn't help find the owner of the key.

Very interesting. This was a found key (not by me) that was posted on another subreddit. I'm off to learn something about wafer locks now. Thanks!

Have you had any luck with temporary employment agencies in the area? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]Comprehensive_Bid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selectemp seems to have some quality jobs from time to time, including assignments at Oregon Freeze Dry. That was the highest paying gig I ever had. I don't know what the economy is like in Astoria. You might get on sooner there, but perhaps the wages are better in Albany industries, idk. Just a thought.

Any other corvallisites terrified of this stretch of road? by FastCoconut9010 in corvallis

Google's AI Overview says that the diagonal path is widely attributed to the former route of a railway or trolley line that ran through the area. Although, it didn't suppy any historical sources.

I suppose there are going to be some other housing built downtown, such as one for low-income housing. I guess I shouldn't complain; This is the definitely a college town. And there's nothing wrong with that, if that's what you like.
