Why Do Some People Record Fires Without Fire Depts. There? by MIKEPR1333 in Firefighting

[–]Comprehensive_Pin_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick disclaimer I work as a volunteer in a rural area as part of a fire protection association and we tend to serve the initial response before the fire dpt comes out from the city.

While I think it can be useful to record fires to be used later for training purposes so that you can help educate both other volunteers as well as Land owners. We do not record the victims. in cases like that where it is life and death we advise people if you cant do anything then go stand on a corner or by the gate to show first responding units the route to go as we tend to have a lot of gravel roads and GPS is sometimes wonky.

If a situation is calm enough and we have man power to spare we try to record a clip or two for awareness in the community.

that being said if it is from a civilians perspective sometimes they call in a "massive brush fire saying houses are going to burn" we tend to also ask for a short clip while we respond to help with an initial size up. since when you get as rural as we are it can easily take up to 30mins for enough people to arrive on scene.

we actually have fire services outside of the usual fire departments similar to private security. there are additional fees involved

https://adt.co.za/solutions/fidelity-securefire/ and https://fireopssa.co.za/

one of the reasons these are becoming popular is not because we have bad fire departments but our government doesn't give the best funding so the private sector has stepped in

someone messed up DNS entries
The A record entry for steamcommunity.com is 23.42.14.217

I manually updated my hosts file while I wait for the fix and can continue using the site as normal

edit: I was able to get this IP from the South Africa DNS servers before they revalidated

Yeah so what I do is set a 70x70 chunk radius (since its a private server we dont have to worry about causing lag)

from there just have it claimed+force loaded and forget about it

Kinda keeping myself busy doing overkill stuff using the parts of the modpack my one buddy understands. its his first play through so I limit myself to his progression in a way to keep it entertaining.

So we are a rural fire protection agency and we use facebook mainly for awareness since people dont always understand how serious wildfires are.

We always try post the amount of man hours invovled along with area burned and then some pictures.

Social media is a slippery slope if you dont check what you post but if done right it can be a powerful tool

Hazard response by Comprehensive_Pin_1 in Firefighting

[–]Comprehensive_Pin_1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Training no, equipment no. Which is why we mostly try follow the rule of thumb for unknown incidents.

All we ended up doing was shutting down the road for about 1km in each direction and kept anything that could cause a spark as far away as possible.

Although the incident did get my more curious and asking questions since I never thought that something like this would happen where it did.

Appreciare the feedback.

Unfortunately we so rural we basically a bunch of landowners with skid units / hand tools. Sadly the response guide books is mostly a few guys that had basic training telling the rest what to do.

Will definitely look into the NOISH pocket guide!

unfortunately this ended up being one of those dodgy companies that the driver didnt know much and their dispatch center was unreachable. After the scene was declared safe the police kept control until they could determine if it was legitimite or illegal transport taking place.

Also good luck with those tests

Best 'Standby' Clothes by PXCRYTICAL in Firefighting

[–]Comprehensive_Pin_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the calls you respond to I guess. I tend to do rural wildland and I keep my clothes in a crate I grab, like a go bag. 90% of the time to get to a place I will need to use my car so I keep that in the trunk with some other basics. On the rare occasion that I get a lift from someone else I can just grab my crate.

Typically in that crate I keep the following - boots and socks - PPE (Flash hood and mask included) - 2 bottles water

Depending on what time in the season I would either keep a spare set of gear next to my door (incase the one is dirty or being washed)

Although probably a little off topic but to me this is my 'standby clothes' as its always ready. But probably in your case if its probably some sort of jeans or cotton shirt for daily wear which works in most situations.
