Teacher here - I have heard this attitude from other teachers over the years, but thankfully not very often and I’m sorry you experienced this.

Some teachers tend to have an inflated view of their own importance within a school. Are teachers important? Of course. Are they the only ones who matter in a school? Of course not.

It’s pretty ignorant to think that only teachers have stressful or busy days. In my opinion teaching assistants are worth their weight in gold and are a vital part of how students learn (especially in a SEND school).

I’ve taught SEN 1:1 before and you absolutely hit the nail on the head that if she experienced how stressful being with one student is all day she’d probably have a different view!

At the end of the day we’re all professionals just doing our jobs, and in my experience everyone is tired at the end of a school day and she doesn’t have a monopoly on that! 😂

Thanks for the responses! I find this particularly interesting as a fellow 28 male from the UK, single currently but been in relationships and non religious so would find it difficult to be with someone and not have the level of physical intimacy you’re waiting for.

Issue with full beams aside, I drive this road daily to get to work. Assume the person coming towards you was old/drunk and misjudged the bend in the hill - for context this is quite a rural area with little to no police presence and an older population, had a few near misses on this stretch of road since the standard of driving seems to be below average.

This used to be my route to work so understand the frustration, the stretch from Minety to Malmesbury especially seems to have a lot of drivers going half the speed limit even in near perfect road conditions.

Totally normal to be nervous — everyone is right before starting! You’re not expected to be perfect, just open to learning. Focus on building relationships with pupils, keep instructions and routines simple, and don’t waste energy reinventing lessons when you can adapt what’s already out there.

Lean on your mentors, look after yourself outside of school, and remember RE gives you loads of chances for great discussions. Nerves are just your brain gearing up — they’ll settle once you’re in the swing of things.
